We keep talking about treating our home studios for mixing purposes.
But of course many of us actually do a fair bit of recording in the same room as well.
So what does that change in terms of acoustic treatment?
What do you focus on first? How do you approach the problem?
In this video I'll tell you how to think about treating a hybrid, a combined mixing and recordings studio

I would also like to see you talk more about treating live recording rooms, and of course how the treatment would depend on the type of music and instruments being recorded. I know usually home studios, which are your focus, will not have such a room, but your advice is useful enough for actual studios I think, and could translate also to people treating a "music room" in their house, for instance one with a grand piano, or where they practice other instruments, or hold house concerts.

A subject well worth talking about Jesco. You did a great job explaining the mindset required in regards to this.

how about combining a mixing and writing room (ie a space in the room with another desk and synths around? where would you put the other desk?

Around 6:00 you mentioned adding ambiance/reverb back into the mix. That’s fine but does nothing for the live aspects of recording or streaming we might do from our studios. I agree with you, but the live use case is IMO the one scenario I find myself reaching for low-latency DSP FX of my audio interface. Zoom sessions and HP mixes still need to sound good not dead.

I have a not so small room, about 60 sq.m. I can build a wall and divide it into a small control room and a small recording room. Or I can use the entire space as a hybrid room. What do you think would be better in terms of acoustics?

How about gobos around the mix position? Then you have the option to remove them when you need more space

Are the plans available for your bass traps with the wood slats we see behind you ? Thx.

    Hi Jesco.
A question regarding what kind of bass-trapping is required when my monitors(Tannoy Gold 5's) only go down to 70hz. Does that mean I only have to deal with low-end at that frequency? Unfortunately, my room is small 3x3x2.5m(I know!)
    Keep up the good work!
    Cheers
    Alex

hi, when recording vocals in the region of 100-200 Hz, there is a hum and low frequencies are overstated, can I find this resonance with a measuring microphone? or it only works for monitoring

    • @MisterSparkles
      @MisterSparkles 2 года назад +1

If you are getting some hum in a specific band then you should be able to scan your room for that noise source with almost any microphone. Put a 100-200Hz band pass EQ on the track in your DAW and sniff around your studio while re-creating the vocal recording session to see what might be vibrating.

I like your channel and try to watch every video, but "without all the voodoo" slogan is a total cringe. it’s culturally offensive and racist, since you’re using it in negative connotations and it simply sounds like "without all the n*-shit (f*g-shit/woman thinking/insert your offensive phrase)". I know that your audience is mostly white cis men, that don’t mind (or even like) this "bold" slogan, and probably will start arguing or trashing me. but facts are facts, please stop using the word voodoo, it’s harmful and awful in this context.
a message from your queer-nb fan, who tries to skip your greetings every time and cringes, when she doesn’t remember to do that

Voodoo is a good word for this context. I think anyone of good faith who hears it used in this context understands exactly what he is saying. He is clarifying concepts in practical terms in a field where clarity is often hard to achieve and ends up seeming "of a different realm, perhaps beyond our understanding." The context is benign. The idea is communicated succinctly. The fact that you hear "without all the n*-shit (f*g-shit/woman thinking/insert your offensive phrase)" is outrageous and over the top.

@@georgemichaelmyers I knew it would come to this. nope, voodoo here is used as a white colonial slur, which translates as "nonsense"/"backward magic thinking". he could just use "without all the nonsense" instead, which is what he really means, and it doesn’t involve trashing other cultures. voodoo is just a different kind of religion, than christianity/islamism/buddhism/daoism etc.
in russia there is a word инфоцыгане, which from white colonial russian translates as people who sell you useless courses/information etc. and it’s now being debated, 'cause it’s the same kind of cultural trashing. in russian цыгане is a slur word for roma-people, in english there is a similar slur word gypsy. and using the word in a derogative context of something, like this (that doesn’t even have any relationship with real roma-people) is harmful. and trashing cultures that belong to racial minorities is racist, you can’t deny it.
racism, sexism, homophobia go hand in hand, that’s just how it is.

    Good day Sir!
Thank you so much for all this wonderful information. It has made a massive improvement on my mixing environment. It is all so fascinating. I do have one question whilst spiralling through all of this.
Can the listening position change after extensive acoustic treatment installing broadband absorption?
    Cheers,
