    I’d add “A Little Priest” from Sweeney Todd. It’s witty and hysterical in a macabre way.

    • @heinleinreader
      @heinleinreader 2 года назад +7

      If we are going to do Sweeney Todd, then I would say "Damn, That's Good" is a quality Choice. I am also surprised that "Whatever Lola Wants" from "Damn Yankees" wasn't mentioned at all. And then there is about half of the songs from "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying". And how about most of the songs from Hair? "White Boys/Black Boys" gets me chuckling every time. There are also a couple from "Chicago" that would qualify as well. The list of better choices is literally endless.

    "Show Off" from Drowsy Chaperone deserves a mention. The magnificent Sutton Foster performed this at the Tony's, putting on a tour de force as a star who wants to give up the stage, singing about not wanting to show off anymore, all the while, showing off every off the wall talent imaginable. Comedic sight gags galore including a spot where Sutton drinks a glass of water while she's still "singing." Just try not to laugh.

    Avenue Q had puppets made by someone who used to be on the Muppets team, so they were as realistic as possible. Some of the puppeteers also. I saw it when it was in previews: it was so funny I nearly fell out of my seat laughing. Since I was in the last row of the mezzanine, and there were stairs directly in front of me, that would have been dire. (My obit would have been "he died laughing.") The songs weren't just upbeat, they were in the style of Sesame Street songs: I saw it a second time with a friend and he pointed out to me that every song is a counterpoint to a Sesame Street song.

    Highly recommend those who haven't seen the number live, take a look at it on RUclips. Even better yet, go watch the musical whenever you see it playing anywhere (includig regional theater or high school)! Worth it! Definitely ranks with Book of Mormon, Avenue Q, and Something Rotten.

      Amen and Natural-Lee. There were other funny bits in 1776 as well. And it wasn't a nothing play either, it actually received multiple Tony nominations. And Chicago actually won Tony awards, and it had funny songs in it. Billy's introduction song comes to mind. The one with the seven murderesses of death row describing their murders was hilarious, in a macabre sort of way.

      @@heinleinreader 1776 actually _won_ Best Musical that year against Hair! (which...okay, it's a fun show but that's an _interesting_ choice in the grand musical theatre scope. 🤔 )
      The original Chicago actually didn't win _any_ Tony awards. It was the revival in 1996 that garnered its popularity.

    • @heinleinreader
      @heinleinreader 2 года назад

      @@HaunaMyKiki I didn't say the original Broadway show won Tony's, I said the Musical did, which would include any revivals, would it not? There was a revival of How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying that did well, and that merely added to the accolades the original, also starring Morse and Vallee, had. By also starring I am not saying those two were in the revivals. But they were in the original Broadway production and the film. Additionally, I don't think I said 1776 DIDN'T win Tony's, I made a qualified statement to that effect. And for Hair to be its competition for the Tony, it would have had to be a revival of Hair, as the original musical stage production on Broadway was in the sixties, while the original stage production of 1776 was, well, not. It actually was one of the shorter turnarounds from stage to film at the time. But I don't know anything at all, I only went to see the stage production of 1776 when I was a kid. My mother took me. She was going to take me to the ballet, but there was nothing new in ballet at the time, and there was this family friendly musical that was playing, so that was why we went. I also saw the revival of Hair at a later time as an adult. I also saw a touring performance of Hairspray with Harvey Fierstien in the role of Mrs Tirnbladt. But again, I know nothing, right?
