I'm really sorry to all of you guys who feel this video is me running out of ideas. I can assure you this is not the case. I know a lot of people felt that with my previous video too. This video is just something that I wanted try to, just something a bit different. The channel isn't going in this direction forever and trust me I still have some real fun and cool ideas for videos. Unless you don't think the ideas are cool then you will still think I am just running out of ideas. :)
but we went to Place last year, this year we should go to Place, we've never been there and I hear great things about it, also the weather is nicer in Place than in Place.
Well, you would have to include Galicia in Ukraine if you're talking about Galicia in Poland, seeing as both are the same thing (divided between western and eastern Galicia), coming from the Austrian kingdom of Galicia-Lodomeria which in turn came from medieval Ruthenian kingdom of Galicia-Volhynia. And yes, I would love to hear where exactly these names came from.
So, if Italy was known as Luogo, China as Mandarin Place and Japan as Tokyo, countries would again not have all the same name, would they? Kind of a nonsense video btw...
I hate how this is how this video is being perceived. This was just a one off thing for something a little different, I have loads of ideas don't worry :)
Kind of a nonsensical concept imo. It's sorta like asking, "what if every person in the world had the same name?" The short answer would be to use nicknames. Using the example of country names is arbitrary when you could give any set of nouns the same name and try to figure out what to call them based off of whatever obvious characteristics. I do enjoy most of your videos but this one had some... interesting arguments.
I just thought it'd be an interesting different kind of video. This isn't the direction of the channel going forward, normal videos will return next week :)
SaitamaIRL I have to agree. It is not your best video. You first say they have the same name, then that they will come up with different names only in a different way than we do now. It will just be nicknames. Lastly, even the example that you use in your alternative universe doesn't make sense. Belgium already has the exact problem you are describing with the north calling it België and the south Belgique.
Many names of states come from "place" - either "place of something" or "belonging to someone" Poland? Place of fields. Japan? Place of rising sun. USA? United Places on continent called after guy named Amerigo. And so on.
A lot of countries called Gangagoo (0:38), There could be... North Gangagoo, South Gangagoo, East Gangagoo, North pero no mucho Gangagoo, South Till the Fuck of the World Gangagoo... etc - it would be nice!
An idea I immediately got is that people would distinguish countries by what is commonly and famously observed there, or perhaps a comparative location. So "Italy" could be "pasta place", "the United States" could be "burger place", "Switzerland" could be "central mountain place", and so forth.
Hey Name Explain! I think all of us know, that you have made videos about countries with similar names, but maybe you should look a little closer on the map, and explain some similar city names, like Bucharest and Budapest for example. I would be happy to see such a video.
I appreciate a lot the idea but when you mention calling by their capital, there is so many cities with the same name like Alexandria which are in Canada, Bulgaria, Egypt and maybe WAY more! There is also so many other cities nearby those regions with the name related to it like Alexandrette (if I spelled it correctly) due to the conquests of Alexander the Geat (except for Canada).
I was watching this video and typing a text at the same time and accidentally wrote "I have a really hard place" instead of "I have a really hard day." So thanks for that
Cheers buddy :) this video got a lot of grief when I first released it, I understand why as it’s a very different kind of video. I’m glad you still enjoyed it despite being different :D
Ancient empires were quite often named for their capital cities - Rome and Babylon spring instantly to mind. Assyria was named for the capital, Asshur, but when they moved the capital to Nineveh (modern Mosul) they kept the old name unchanged. In fact there's probably an episode in this someplace. There is also the topic of anachronyms, what things are called in a very different time period. We often say Byzantine Empire (for the capital city!!) but they never called it that themselves and I don't think that anybody else did either, they called the empire Rome, and after the West collapsed, they tried to "reconquer" the Italian peninsula and "return it" to Roman rule.
Maybe the countries would be named after different events: USA: "United States which were formerly the 13 Placish Colonies" Austria: "That Southern Place" (in German) Macedonia: "Former Republic of a Federal Republic which used to be called place but our place is now called place but the place-ks don't like when we use the word as our country name" Scotland: "Norther Place of the United Kingdom of Places Located on the Placish Island"
I know that in greece the controversially named country south of serbia and north of greece is being referred to us Skopje in recent years. Countries could also be named after states in it, since said nation is also referred to by some as Vardaska
The problem is, names are used as a primary identifier of the thing you're talking about. If several things have the same name, people will add some kind of description to tell which thing they are talking about. We have two Congos, we call one "Republic of" and the other "Democratic Republic of". We have two Koreas, we call one North and the other South (since "Republic of" and "Democratic People's Republic of" is still not clear enough for people who aren't that familiar with the subject). We have a country full of, say, Johns, then they have to clarify what their fathers' names are, or what is the name of their families, or even whatever their friend call them. If every country would be called "place", then this naming system no longer identifies the countries, therefore it will be discarded and a new naming system would take place. Simple as that.
I think that, in the universe universe that you discussed, Belgium would split up in Plaats (Dutch), Platz (German) and Endroit (French). Considering that The Netherlands, Germany and France would already be called respectivally Plaats, Platz and Endroit, these area's of the former 'Belgium' might join those countries. Considering that, it might also be that countries with the same or similar language would join each other.
On Star Trek people always just referred to the name their planet, and everyone across the planet had the same culture and language, so I guess it would be like that.
Here's another, place names that replicated several times, serially like dominoes. York was used to name New York City, which named New York State, and there's a neighborhood in Brooklyn called East New York and a town in New Jersey called West New York. Carthage gave us what is now Cartagena in Spain, which gave us Cartagena in Colombia. Also look for the New Cities.... Neopolis (Naples), Carta Chadash (Carthage), New City (several across the English-speaking world), Novgorod, and I'm sure many more "New Cities" around the globe.
You should do a video on why some words from different languages are quite similar to each other even though they were developed in completely different areas of the world. Some of these words are pretty basic, old words and it doesn't make sense that they would be used from trade and interaction between countries since they should have been developed before countries get to that point.
According the All Knowing Wiki, Belgium ALREADY has three official names: Koninkrijk België (Dutch) Royaume de Belgique (French) Königreich Belgien (German)
I don't get why people think this is lazy or whatever. I think it's fun to have room for a few subjects to speculate around as well! And that ending joke was actually clever...
I've seen that when a country decides on a name change (Myanmar, Iran, USA) we continue to use the prior name for the predominant language (Burmese, Persian, English).
It's also interesting that when there's formal discussion about foreign politics, different countries are referred to by their capital city. That could be an idea for your future video: Why is Russia's administration/government called Kreml? etc, is there something else behind it than just that it's a shorter term.
America: I declare war on America! America: Why? Were allies! America: No not you. I mean the other America! America: You mean me? I am your father! You shouldn’t kill me! Were allies! America: No not you! The other America! America: Me? America: Yes! America: Fine! I will unite the Korean Peninsula under communist! America: America, can you help me? America: You know what? This game sucks! America: your right. I guess that’s the end of that game. Alright we will name our selfs our real name again now that the fame is over. Canada: aww. That was fun as it lasted. America: It doesn’t matter now. I am the true America. Period. North Korea: So... are we still going to go to war? *All nations stare at each other* All nations: Fuck.
World events in this "place" world 1: Cuban Missile Crisis "The President of Place and the Emperor of Place are trying to come up with a response to the Place Missile Crisis" 2: The nuking of Hiroshima "Place has just destroyed Hiroshima with a nuclear bomb, a city in Place." 3: the Cold War "Place and Place are having some tense times. They also have nukes."
The very concept of what a country is would be different, or indeed nationality and language. With the same word describing them I doubt we would even ask ourselves these questions.
People love naming things, because we love categories. If all countries had the same name, we would just use some different scheme to differentiate them; i.e., "You're from the tea and crumpets place? I'm from the bald eagle place." In the end, it's basically the same thing anyway.
If you name a country after its capital, people might get upset, the Dutch are in the same situatiation tho, as The Netherlands is commonly referred to as Holland, which is only a province of the nation, not the nation itself.
In the Netherlands we call the ""Dutch" language Belgian people speak Flemish. It's in a lot of ways the same language, but there are also lots of differences too. But in the end yes it would be "Plaats".
The more likely scenario, every country is just named "my country". Since language exist, a English speaker would insult a Chinese as a "Wodescum", while Chinese would call English speaker a "My狗", and countries will likely be strongly tied to language, so no countries will accept a 2nd language, and they will likely be even more aggressive in making sure no foreign countries use their language. in case of shared languages like America, they will likely call British "Island fuckers", while Britain will call America "Continent wankers", and Australian will be the "Idiots down unda", while calling the others "island cunts", "Continent cunts"
It's funny that you should say that people wouldn't know whether to say Melbourne or Sydney, seeing as that was an actual debate and why the ACT exists. Basically NSW was like 'well we were here first' and Victoria was like 'well we're bigger! (They were more populated) and so they just slapped a border in the middle of NSW, and said 'guess what? It's not in New South Wales OR Victoria!'
Well, actually. Mexico City wouldn't be called Place City, but as Mexico because it's actually the city who gave it's name to the country, as your example of Tokyo being the name of Japan.
One funny thing about the word place, it that French has it too, but more as a square (of a city etc). French also uses words like plaza and piazza borrowed from related languages, and meaning about the same as place in French. And English may use them as well, for a taste of exotism. After all, so was the word 'place' borrowed from French at its time. I'm sure the Anglo-Saxons had a word for the idea before that, but place became more fashionable. So if UK was to be called Place, natively, it should be called Spot, or something more Saxon. Or should it still be called called 'Place' in the old Britannic way -what would their word for a place have been? Or the name the people used who were there before the Celts arrived? What would indeed be the native word for Place, Spot?
Funny that the suggested video at the end was on the four languages of Switzerland, since I was going to ask what it would be called? Endroit, Ort, Luogo, or whatever it is in Romansh?
Canada is effectively like this alternate world already... as it's believed to be based on a local native american word for Settlement or Village, "Kanata" :)
What if every city was called Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch (That's an actual welsh city name) and every Capital was Krungthepmahanakhon Amonrattanakosin Mahintharayutthaya Mahadilokphop Noppharatratchathaniburirom Udomratchaniwetmahasathan Amonphimanawatansathit Sakkathattiyawitsanukamprasit (Full name of Bangkok, Thailand's capital)
If I ever get the opportunity to start my own country (and not even a microcountry that only exists on the internet or is contained entirely within a single man-made structure, but a legit country with some potential for UN recognition), I'm totally stealing the name Gangagoo.
A lot of people think this topic is really boring and dumb and I agree it is a bit silly and repetitive but I think it is actually an interesting topic to descus.
Name Explain it's completely fine I love all of your content, I wish more people knew about your channel
Thank you very much Watsie. :)
Name Explain no problem mate!
Every channel gets that accusation. Maybe same 20 people?
What if you name all the countries as United Nation.I think "Place" is like a normal name and sounds a bit old.
I find this video offensive. I do have a real name.

Mom: where should we go to on vacation this year??
Me: place
XD
but we went to Place last year, this year we should go to Place, we've never been there and I hear great things about it, also the weather is nicer in Place than in Place.
Are we going to Place, or are we going to Place?
no let’s go to place
United Nations should be United Places. LOL
indeed
and UK ?..United Places too I suppose ?
@@JayDieTye UK would be United Place, while USA a United Places. Simple.
Make a video about the difference beteeen Galicia in Spain and Galicia in Poland
Ulrik Andersen GOOD IDEA!!

And Galatia - Turkey.
But you can't describe where the name came from without talking about both regions.
Bob is the best name for a country ever. I feel like it would constantly be at war with Chad.
That would be too easy. Bob's your uncle!
So, if Italy was known as Luogo, China as Mandarin Place and Japan as Tokyo, countries would again not have all the same name, would they?
Kind of a nonsense video btw...
😠😠😠 chup
Are you using drugs, Patrick?
Tea counts as a drug right?
Name Explain it depends on what you're using to make your tea

I thought of Bob.
Bob is just the go to name.

Not trying to be a smartass, just wanted to provide some controversy. Perhaps my nickname shall be "smartass" ;)
I'm use to people thinking I'm running out of ideas now so it's cool.
Name Explain you can do a video explaining how dadaism word came from
SaitamaIRL I have to agree. It is not your best video. You first say they have the same name, then that they will come up with different names only in a different way than we do now. How you came up with this idea for video? SRSLY?
i liked the idea, it's always fun to speculate weird scenarios
They would describe them by a description= for example, Canada would be "Great Northern Country" and Australia would be "Island Desert"
Land Down Under, um isn't it?
So literally how the Europeans used to name their colonies. Like “Ivory Coast”
An idea I immediately got is that people would distinguish countries by what is commonly and famously observed there, or perhaps a comparative location. So "Italy" could be "pasta place", "the United States" could be "burger place", "Switzerland" could be "central mountain place", and so forth.

I feel like Patrick must have been high when he made this video. 😅
I live in place
Same

KayJay LOL!
KayJay Nice catch. Also, half of the time he mistakingly put 'endriot' as the French word of 'place' instead of 'endroit'

I was watching this video and typing a text at the same time and accidentally wrote "I have a really hard place" instead of "I have a really hard day." So thanks for that
"Where are you going? " "I'm going places"
The way I figure you could solve the issue is, when referring to a country you could use a picture of the man made boarders.
I'm from place
that cool, i'm from place too
Not from that place the other place
You could tell apart countries by their flags.
Amazing keep up the great work
At firt I thought what a silly idea for a video, but it turned out to be fun and quite interesting, really. Great job!

Nope, calling every country the same name is not worth making a single RUclipsr lose his job.
Seemed weird at first but you bring up a good point. Like the reduction of Endynoms.
According the All Knowing Wiki, Belgium ALREADY has three official names:

Because most of the countries with slightly sounding names our done, it's time to make a video about all countries having same name.

If you name a country after its capital, people might get upset, the Dutch are in the same situatiation tho, as The Netherlands is commonly referred to as Holland, which is only a province of the nation, not the nation itself.

All I'm thinking about now is the fish, Plaice. God that would make it even more confusing!
Marklar, stop the marklar, Marklar marklar.
I mean Congo-Brazzaville and Congo-Kinshasha are examples of countries in common speech being named with their capitals - it's fairly common in Africa
Of course it would really just be that "place" would just work as the word "country" so it would just become "China place" and "UK place"
