He did that because for Lightning McQueen this story related a lot with Cars 1 for him. Cars 3 was his continued winning life with Mater. Cars 3 had the impact memoirs of Cars 1.

Years ago the director of the first film mentioned that he would love to have Mario on the first film, and if a sequel ever happened we would like him to play a major role. However, Nintendo is not interesed with movies and they are making a deal with Universal studios for a theme park section in Tokyo/Hollywood/Orlando. So i think the possibilitie of Mario featuring on Wreck it Ralph 2 are from slim to none. (Also this new movie does not have anything to do with videogames, and more with "internet" "memes") Lets see how that go.

That would be amazing. Actually, when Disney created the very short-lived Circle 7 to replace Pixar, they had a sequel in the works for Monsters Inc, called Lost in Scare-idise. It sounded amazing, it was about Mike and Sully being trapped in the human world. Really hope Pixar might do this some day.
