STORYLINE:
Relatives, fans and former team-mates have remembered South African cricketer Hansie Cronje at his funeral as a great sportsman, a courageous leader and a contrite man who regretted his role in the scandal that destroyed his career.
"Hansie should be remembered as the good natured spirit that he was," national cricket captain Shaun Pollock told the packed funeral service for 32-year-old Cronje, who died on Saturday in a plane crash.
More than a thousand people filled the church at Grey College in Bloemfontein, Cronje's alma mater. A large television screen and rows of seats were set up outside to accommodate the overflowing crowd.
The audience included Cronje's family and the nation's cricket squad, wearing their team jackets. South African Sports Minister Ngconde Balfour and former United Cricket Board head Ali Bacher, both of whom had strongly criticised Cronje's role in the scandal, were there as well.
The charismatic Cronje, who took over South Africa's national team at the age of 25 to become its youngest captain, led South Africa to possibly its greatest triumph - a five-run win over Australia in the Sydney Test of 1994.
But South African fans felt betrayed six years later after Indian officials announced they had tape recordings of Cronje talking to an Indian bookmaker during the team's tour of the subcontinent.
Cronje was punished with a lifetime ban from the cricket, although Pollock spoke of Cronje as an inspiring leader and an endearing prankster who put petroleum jelly on door handles and once gave a team-mate sleeping pills instead of malaria tablets.

We can all see in the eyes of the South African team, the immense amount of respect they have for Hansie, their ex-captain and the shock they were in because of his sudden demise!
I wish he stayed alive and got that second chance at life.

There are many evidences as to how Hansie orchestrated with indian bookmakers which gave rise to bigger scams within not just cricket but other sports of that time.

Hansie did made a mistake.
He fell in to the trap of underworld and cunning bookies who had a strong clout on this game.
But when he was caught ( good for his soul) he acknowledged his mistake with deep remorse. It's fine that he was caught at right time or else this scandal would have been corrupted him so much that it would have been no way to repent and ask forgiveness.
I think the plane crash was well planned to kill him.
His timely acceptance paved way to the great respect he regained.
If he had not been involved in match fixing and was alive. Who knows South Africa might have won the 2003 world cup. As its prominant players were at their peak during that time. Hansies leadership would definitely have made them very confident.

Strange things happened to the equipment at the airfield before he died , when reported they received death threats.

deaths have shook me, malcom marshall, raman lamba, or the late aussie , even the poor condition of living standards of patrick paaterson, list goes on fo ever. but this was the saddest which touched my mind. hansie was like brother for all of us. never met, but so approachable and to some extent indian for us due to his charactaristics. perhaps his humily or dont know. my younger sis even now is saddened by his premature death. just think he could have played minimum another 5 years game.
