  • With demographic changes in the US population, we see many more dermatology patients in our Dallas TX practice with Ethnic Skin or Skin of Color. This population includes but is not limited to African Americans, Latinos & Hispanics, Native Americans, Pacific Islanders, East Asians, South Asians, and West Asians. This population produces more melanin in their skin, so there needs to be special attention when these skin types are treated. In dermatology we refer to these patients as having Skin Types III, IV, V, and VI. Some skin conditions are more prevalent in Skin of Color. Other common skin conditions can appear differently in Skin of Color. As this population is growing and seeking more cosmetic and aesthetic procedures, familiarity with these skin types is essential when it comes to cosmetic treatments. For example, laser treatments should be performed with different settings in patients with skin of color, presuming it is appropriate to do lasers at all (varies from patient to patient and the particular laser procedure). Dermatology patients with skin of color should seek experts with experience in skin of color in order to optimize their results and minimize complications.
