I have a 3000/8000 grit Norton wet stone. It works amazing. My old wood handle Rapala filet knives are amazing. If you can find Fiskars knives, they are great, made with Sandvik steel. They take an edge and keep it. I have Wuestoff Trident kitchen knives. They are well balanced but are more difficult to sharpen. The carbide sharpeners work about 15 times on hard stainless knives, then they become more of a knife duller. The ceramic wheel sharpeners are very similar to the carbines. They become load with steel dust and will round your edge m
Nice job.... Being a carpenter, I find using a wet stone for my chisels and a leather strop makes them razor sharp ,same with knifes. And as with the end of your video I can indeed shave with them haha. Also got a wet stone wheel with angle jig to get that perfect edge every time.
Omg, I am 70 years old and just learnt how to shave. Well, we’ve had pallet work, roof tile placement, gardening, bird watching, floor painting,, I could go on, but I am so pleased I now know how to shave. Lately it’s been Totally awesome anything but fishing show. Thank you ☺️
Haha..Fishing was last week, usually every Friday for last 10 years..During the week I put up other random stuff...I could put a fishing film up every night and someone would still moan about it...I like to mix it up ,and from the comments it looks like many do enjoy seeing different things..More strange films to come I'm afraid..I'm holding one back that I think is great, might even be an exclusive on RUclips..keep watching.
Oh Greame, as a brit of culture I was expecting you to use a brush and soap to whip up a quick shaving lather! If you are ever bored, feel free to go down that rabbit hole. The UK has some amazing local soap makers and I am sure you would love all those scents as well as the ritual. And fishing is the perfect training for whipping the brush. Anyways: nice video. You seem well on top of your sharpening. Great to see you use your tools for a long time. That honing steel is a treasure! .-)
A friends dad was an extremely well respected mobile knife sharpener for the restaurant industry and one of his quirks was that when taking on a new customer he'd ask to inspect the restaurants cutlery selection and confiscate all the sharpening steels and other sharpening gizmos because they'd make his job harder through poor use. He'd replace them with a stropping block and teach the staff how to use them properly to keep the edges keen between sharpenings
Hi, i had an expensive fillet knife. Fantastic for general use about 6 months. Then it started tearing the fish. So i used as on here a stone and tried to sharpen it....it devloped cracks.
I am going to have to sit the wife down to watch this download, she is a wasteful individual that throws knives out and buys new ones. I don't ever remember her asking me to sharpen them they are just gone. Don't let her near my fishing knives although now just used in the garden I do look after them and they carry out lots of chores better than pruners, shears and scissors. Graeme this has been educational and entertaining thanks for posting.
I most generally my first initial sharpening I’ll use a bastard file or a good stone if I have it and then every sharpening after that I just use my sharpening steel. I can hit my knives a few licks on the steel and probably be able to shave with them too. I tell you another good stone to use, that’s a Arkansas Stone, ( that’s AR-KAN-SAW) lol, anyways yeah those are real good stones to use to keep a good edge on your knives. Good deal Graeme!
45 degree angle on a honing steel to sharpen the knife depending on the knife some will go to a 23 degrees angle but that normally on ur more expensive knives
Graeme. I'm probably not the first person to ask but do you actually play pool on that pool table? And thank you for reminding me to get a proper knife for fishing, my cleaver is a bit big. 😋👍
When I was trained as a chef I was told you place the end of the sharpening steel on the table so you can't cut yourself as you are working away from yourself!
good informative video m8. i have a old steel, sheffield england forged steel. loveily wooded and brass handle, its classed as a antigue when i googled it. i also have a cheap modern steel and stone set, diamon stone and axe stone. i did use oil and was stones in soapy water , not i just soak/use water with my stones. seams to work ok. i luv old stuff, have old oil cans, bisket tins, tools etc. hahaha you are so funny, a few times now i went to a barber for a cut throat shave. they used disposable blades, i was dissapointed. i wanted to see the old cut throat razor and leater etc,i baught a old cut throat razor the handle is made out of a old wooden ruler. its pretty crappy and not useable but looks cool.
Wow what a collector! The ruler razor is worth some money. It was made so the barber could ask indicate the size of condom the customer required. Without any embarassment in the salon.
Exactly right. The steel hones the edge. Basically straightens the burr back into line so the edge feels keener. Eventually when the burr is gone completely, the knife will need re grinding.
after working in a chicken factory for 5 years ,, you sharpen using a steel with the blade facing away from your hand holding the steel ,, its the safest way ,, do not draw the blade towards the hand , you will get cut if the steel has no guard
my grandfather used to sharpen / hone is safety razor blades inside of a glass cup. I understand the window thing. Just dont sharpen ur knife in a parking lot. lol
I thought you were going to replicate an old Les Dawson gag and say "Now to the fourth of our knives.", hold up four fingers of which 3 were bandaged and bloodied. My uncle used to sharpen chisels and plane blades and then whack them to a fro across the palm of his hand to put the fine edge on. His hands were like leather anyway.
Interesting one Graeme! I've got a knife the same as your Bowie knife, but it has a red crest on the handle. Never been able to find out what the crest means, and whether it is German or Spanish. Always has a really sharp edge. Stay safe & well. 👍👍
I found that video very informative Greaeme, got a steel very similar to yours , it was my grandmother as well but I have never used it, getting it out of the draw now for a few experiments, can I sue you if it goes wrong ?? 😁😁😁 Only joking . 👍😎
Its a German boy scout knife. Probably valued aroun £120 and Graeme's most valuable blade. The Hitler youth had the same knife but with a red and white swastika where the scout fleur de lis is. You can carry any of these knives with you but not immediately to hand. In fishing box is fine because they are for a specific purpose. In your pocket or glove compartment is not fine. Common sense should dictate
Just don't get caught carrying them outside your home as the legal blade length is a max blade length of 3inch and non lockable even if your fishing it applies.
I was just pointing out, for the viewers, that it is illegal if you get caught with a blade bigger then 3inch , even sitting on the beach you can technically be arrested, if your oversized locked knife was on show. Only if its part of a registered trade and its a genuine tool of that trade then its allowed. Only trying to help.
@@colinmitchell9212 you are correct in that being the law. I've got an interesting genuine question for you though that I was pondering a day or two ago. I was tidying up my fishing gear which had the start of mice living in it and I found an old lock knife with a blade of 2.75 inches, however, the lock doesn't work on it so it technically doesn't lock. My question is: is this still illegal because it was designed as a lock knife and has a lock on it, or is it now legal because it doesn't actually lock and functions as a plain folding knife? I do genuinely wonder where I stand here re the law.

I have seen many knife videos. This is the first I have seen anyone shave with a knife. Well done!

Hi Graeme,
Glad your still using your Orange knife and indeed like it. Inexpensive as they are their great value.

Great video, what type of oil do you use for sharpening?
Brilliant video Graeme. What shaving cream was that!
Quality video
I was expecting the tomato sauce to come out at the end😀.
Hi Graeme , nice video, Richard the plasterer 😉
But not as nice as the plastering and skim job you did on that property...it was real class..thanks for that...Best I have seen.

The old Antique bone handle sharpener, that belonged to your Gran, was that the bone or the knife Mr pulled?😁
Nah your knife is really nice Graham x

A fish descaler I thought it was for sawing wood. Who knew?
Im pretty sure a steel doesn't sharpen a knife by taking material off. It straightens the cutting blade, so it cuts (and sharpens) better
I nevef thought of that....?...

Your bush craft knife, 2nd to last. Looks very much like a nazi youth dagger 1943 as no eagle head on the pomell. Love to know from others on this?

2nd mistake...Being able to cut bait exactly as I want ??
Why is using oil detrimental to sharpening ?? Explain please Mr Raider ....
Why are they called oil stones?
Some stones use water and some use oil as lubricants. The oil lubricated stones are called oil stones and the water lubricated stones are called whetstone (wet stones). 🤷
