he is at least several times more talented than dc's superstars such as jim lee and ivan reis. i think him and adi granov and alex ross have the greater perfection in fine art than whoever else in comic book art ground.
Lee and Travis are my all-time favorites. I think even Travis was a huge fan of Lee as you could see in Travis's early works before he found his own style. I wish Travis would do drawing streams on Twitch like Lee is starting to. Would be amazing to see more of his works and maybe hear his thoughts on his process.
his clear understanding of light and shadow, matched with his ability to break the rules and still accomplish a realistic and beautiful piece, really just tickles my fancy. love this guy-so underrated. watching him draw is so therapeutic.
I love watching artist draw. to me it's usually better than any tutorial because the artist is speaking threw the drawing. That hole picture worth a thousand words? yeah. That's pretty much it.
I somewhat have to agree. I admire more the levels of knowledge of the anatomy of someone like John Buscema more than the execution of the same techniques. You can tell which artist has more experience with the foundations of drawing and anatomy over the artist who rely more on style itself and gimmicks of technique. Buscema and Kubert, among some on this series, are more skilled and talented than some of the others. You can tell because all of the artists draw the same things.
Never been a big fan of how DC characters are drawn, but how can people draw like this on a daily basis, when my drawings would take months for it to look as good as these ones!
This was Dave's redesign of Green Lantern for the series of one-shot books Stan Lee did with DC Comics' Superheroes. It gave artists a chance to break away from continuity and tackle these characters from a perspective never attempted. Like GL here is now an elemental guardian of the Earth.
I agree. These guys weren't just born with that skill level, not all people realize you have to draw your ass off every day and always challenge yourself to grow into that kind of art level.
i've always enjoyed travis charest's work. i've begun to notice how much matt busch renders things similarly to travis. they both seem to go after a norman rockwell style.
Thank you for posting these videos. It's so cool to see someone who's great at what they do, and to think of all the work involved in creating all the art that goes into a "simple" comic. If you want some examples of "live action" super powers, feel free to click on my screen name to the left (Marknew91) and look at the short uploaded clips (I play RPGs so seeing superpowers is helpful). It'd be cool to think one of my silly 1970s TV clips heled inspire an artist!
WOW...this video it's fantastic...it's a real pleasure to watch travis Charest at work and seeing how he can create such incredible art! Thanks for posting this video...
Travis Charest...how do you describe his abilities? Otherworldly, superhuman...It's hard to put into words. He really is capable of some of the most strikingly unique, incredible artwork I've ever seen produced in any medium. I wish he did more actual comic book work or would at least continue to publish new sketchbooks/artbooks so we could get some of the magic in print. Great stuff!
If you never leave your desk, you will someday draw like that. They are extremely talented, sure. But they draw like that not because they have "a gift". They draw like that because they practice. And that you can do too. :)
Travis' Superman looks incredible. He looks like a MAN while still retaining quite a youthful look. That's what Superman should look like. The hair was spot on and the moon looked incredible. The lighting was masterful too. The only problem is the "S" shield is awkward. Awesome drawings!
partly consistency, many comic books allow for diffrent type of art styles, and quite often what seem like similar style is still subtly different from artist to artists. Comic book art is semi realistic and there is only so much you can do when working with pencil and ink. But at the end day the characters have to be recognisable, and the art style has to appeal to a mass market, and be simplistic enough for the artist to make 20 pages worth, while realistic enough too not seem cartoony.
Those "Fountain Pentel" pens are hard to find. I don't think that they are being made anymore. I guess when Dave Gibbons was drawing with it in this video, the video may be an old one. Damn!
...drawing like this comes from a manifestation of discipline and commitment. Spend 10 hours a day, everyday and you will see results that even will surprise you!...
DANG! That Superman was pretty good. I can draw like that, but i'm just bad at inking. That's why most of my artwork has to be saved quickly, or it will be gone. :(
Travis Charest. One of the most underrated illustrators ever. The guy is amazing. He really doesn't get enough recognition, when some get too much...
he is at least several times more talented than dc's superstars such as jim lee and ivan reis. i think him and adi granov and alex ross have the greater perfection in fine art than whoever else in comic book art ground.
Studz Ramrod like rob liefeld?

Mr J Rommita Jr. *Cough cough
Agreed. Charest is my favorite artist. Elegant linework and mastery of negative space.
his clear understanding of light and shadow, matched with his ability to break the rules and still accomplish a realistic and beautiful piece, really just tickles my fancy. love this guy-so underrated.
watching him draw is so therapeutic.
That Superman at the end is legendary, I need that on a shirt
The first artist is Dave Gibbons (Watchmen) drawing the Just Imagine Stan Lee Green Lantern.
that was just a sketch for travis, lol. makes me wanna cry.
Ah, Dave Gibbons. Bless the Watchmen and Dave's amazing art along with Alan's amazing writing.
I love watching artist draw. to me it's usually better than any tutorial because the artist is speaking threw the drawing. That hole picture worth a thousand words? yeah. That's pretty much it.
Travis is the best...incredible art and style...it's a real pleasure to watch him at work! Thanks for posting this great videos...

Always liked his work... beautiful and clean..👍
if i could draw like that, i would never leave my desk
That Fountain Pentel that Dave used is an amazing marker...don't think they make them anymore though. Anyone know?
The detail on Superman and the Moon in the backgorund is incredible.
could watch this all day.. the superman sketch was effin sick!!!
I'm jealous. These guys work so quickly!
Love Charest’s style. I remember it catching my eye back on team 7 from image.
I just finished watching this and wanted to write the exact same thing..these guys really know how to use a pencil..I can't even draw a stick man..
love that superman drawing...truely a work of art
I like dave gibbons shading, and superman looks badass
I agree. These guys weren't just born with that skill level, not all people realize you have to draw your ass off every day and always challenge yourself to grow into that kind of art level.

Anyone else minutely examining the tools these great artists are using, the pens, markers and brushes? I am.
omg the inking of the green lantern is godly.
Dude that superman was fantastic!!!
Jim Lee is and always will be the best Superman/Batman artist of all time. Although Charest work here is bloody impressive - love the use of white.
I think Neal Adams probably will always be the best Superman /Batman artist nobody really comes close to his mark on them.

Charest's technique here is fun.
Dr. Manhattan is an awesome character
WOW...this video it's fantastic...it's a real pleasure to watch travis Charest at work and seeing how he can create such incredible art! Thanks for posting this video...
I was hoping you had a Travis drawing from scratch, his was really just him coloring in the moon.
travis charest is just insane
Man that looks good , I've got to try using some off white paper like that. The white pencil looks so cool. The Superman was ideal.
I need more of these! They're awesome!
this video makes me relax.
Thank you very much for this gift!
Wow! Magic hands!!
That superman is legit!! very nice
Pure magic.

I love the sounds of these drawings. Always makes my mind fuzzy :P

monochromatic drawings are awesome
I believe "fountain pentel" is the pen Gibbons is using in the beginning.
I like it, maybe they could add music to the drawing process. But boy do they make it look easy.
Dave Gibbons = Genious
Dave Gibbon is the new Dave Gibbons...
Travis' Superman looks incredible.

best superman drawing i've ever seen.
l love the sound of drawing pencils and pens in the marnin
Not me. I hate that *squeak* sound that Sharpies make. it hurts my ears.
The Toast and also the balloon squeak
I would give up my first child to Satan if I could draw like Travis.
Great work!
Every line they put on the paper is perfect. -_- I don't think they even have erasers....
AMAzing this guy, is so tallented
amazing!
one word Brilliant
that drawing is amazing
@SuperBanti It is. DC did some one-shots where Stan Lee did his version of different DC characters.
Travis Killed It!!!
@lllBOOZERlll Gibbons is using a Pentel Pocket Brush Pen - amazing pen, and is refillable too.
Those "Fountain Pentel" pens are hard to find.
I don't think that they are being made anymore.
I guess when Dave Gibbons was drawing with it in this video, the video may be an old one.
Damn!

Dr. Manhattan goes Green Lantern
the super man is really good.
i sometimes draw stick figures and act like they are as good as this
Bravi !
I like it !
DANG! That Superman was pretty good. I can draw like that, but i'm just bad at inking. That's why most of my artwork has to be saved quickly, or it will be gone. :(
Bravo, comrade!
@SamvoltS It's actually a re-imagined Green Lantern, hence the logo on the chest. They otherwise look identical though.
This sort of resembles Ion, the embodiment of the Green willpower.
youre right... it is the blue dude
Jesus
I watched all 3 videos
Thats amazing :D
I picked up on a few techniques and things they use, so it will help me :D
Thanks muchly for these vids
travis is amazing! a great video!...
this sooo beautiful! thank you batmitey for uploading and sharing!!
@rsmanimation
i think it is Abin Sur, the alien that gave Harold Jordan the ring to become the green lantern.
travis is a beast
This is Stan Lee's Green Lantern, and remminds me a lot of Dr. Manhattan of.... David Gibbons.
that is way to good
