  • Most of us know that the classic lesbian movie "Carol" (starring Cate Blanchett and Rooney Mara) is based on the book "The Price of Salt" by Patricia Highsmith, but not many people know that the book was inspired by a creepy real life event... that ended in tragedy. Watch the video to hear the tragic true story behind Carol and the honestly kind of miraculous way this important piece of queer literature came to be.

I really like the way you tell stories and talk about this topic; it's very vivid. Your story reminds me of a passage in the novel, where she and Carol are in the car, and she wishes the tunnel would collapse, killing both of them, and their bodies would be pulled out together. When I read that part, I was quite surprised by her bold thinking.

I am writing an article based on a book.
Please can you contact me and tell me what books you took the information you said in the video from.
Please tell me if you know where to find Highsmith's drafts of this novel, her Writer's Notes. I saw a draft of The Price of Salt in the video? I really need that.

Why can’t the book just be a love story or just a book about forbidden love? Why does it have to be a queer book or a lesbian book or gay story? I just hate the labels. It’s just a love story!

Because it’s extremely meaningful for lesbians, specifically, then and now. Labels aren’t always bad, and sometimes it can be harmful to dismiss them, when it comes to things like this.
