- In the early 20th century, Beatrice Morrow Cannady emerged as a prominent African-American civil rights activist in Portland. As a newspaper publisher and lawyer, she challenged racial prejudice and discrimination at a time when the Ku Klux Klan was rising to power.

Her story is so inspiring, it makes me feel, for a moment, like it's worth it to keep fighting. How she managed to be a near endless fount of goodwill and principal in the face of the realities makes me feel hopeful. Wonderful.
