WatchYourLan is a lightweight network IP scanner with web GUI that is SUPER easy to deploy.
Here is the GitHub repository:
github.com/aceberg/WatchYourLAN
Here is the docker-compose.yml:
github.com/aceberg/WatchYourL...
Be sure to change your volume path to where you want to store your sqlitedb file.
Also change the timezone for your configuration to match your location.
One last, super important change to make is for the network interface you want to use. If you want to find it via ssh, you can connect to your server via the terminal and run this command:
ip link show
Timestamps
0:00 intro
0:42 ad
1:32 overview
5:52 installation
10:23 getting your interface
13:52 wrap up

Fixed
Sort by IP Issue #4, Issue #14
Awesome!! This comment has been pinned!!
Nice alternative to Pi-alert. That one does very similar things. You also have to name your devices on that Pi-alert. Well done.
Thanks for watching and commenting!! I really appreciate you!!
Thanks so much for this video. Using the information in this video i have for the first time using Portainer: Created a Template, Deployed a Stack. And it worked perfectly. Excellent Video !!
Dude! That's awesome! Well done!! 🥳🥳
That IP sorting issue needs to be fixed. Shocking they thought that was ok to ship with such an easy thing to fix. Cool tool!
I'll be curious to see if they do anything about it, too
Great sir👍
Such a useful tool. Hope they fix an IP sorting issue as well. It's a simple thing to fix, even I can submit a pull request for that.
I hope so too. I opened an issue on the github to address it, so we'll see. Thanks for watching and commenting!! :)
I already do that via windows server as DHCP Reservation MAC Address and keep a spreadsheet.....but I can see it would work in a enterprise for work. nice.
David, great video! Thank you for putting in the work. Do you know if this app can scan all your Vlans as well? At this time I can only see devices on my default network (172.16.1.x) . I'm running this app in a docker container from within my Proxmox VE.
I don't think this will do subnets like that :( Thanks for watching and commenting!!
@@DBTechYT Hopefully the developer will look into adding that feature.
Thank you.
No worries!
Thanks for the video. I have a question, Is there anyway for this software to alert via email or push notification or any other means if any new device is discovered?
So this container has been set up to use Shoutrrr for notifications, so you'd have to look into the options available in Shoutrrr to see what kinds of notifications you can get when new devices are recognized.
Email is supported. You can learn more here: containrrr.dev/shoutrrr/v0.5/
Hello, Can you configure "whatyourlan" scan multiple subnets?
Hello!!! Thanks for the video! One question, have watchyourlan Alerts by email or webhook for new devices detected connected in the network Same a pialert?
I don't see why not
If you use Ubiquiti, Omada, or MikroTik, insights are built into it. But if you use anything else, WYL would be a good option.
My router has a notification feature and I've got a Stingbox that does it as well, but not everyone does. Thanks for watching and commenting!! :)
Even my basic TP-Link router displays this information, however it isn't very convenient to get it or rename devices, so this is still better.
Sorry to write here , but need help .
I am looking for a cpanel alternative, but opensource , and which Cannot be hackable or in other words my files should not be injected with some external files... this mostly happened with wordpress .. how to stop these..
Hi... is this better or worst that Pi.Alert? How does it compare, and what's the differences?
It all depends on your needs. I would try them both and see which you like better
Thanks for a great guide. I've deployed the container, but the log shows it's not finding any network devices. Also the volume isn't listed under Portainer's volumes tab. Please help.
BTW I have this installed this on a Raspberry Pi.
What do your container logs say in Portainer?

2022/09/15 20:52:45 INFO: scanning interface eth0
Your logs got held for review. I looked at them and it says you're using eth0. Is that the only interface on the device? If there are other interfaces, be sure to add them. If eth0 isn't correct, update it and see if that helps.
@@DBTechYT That did it! I had 3 more adapters, with spurious names (as per your video..). Have added all 3 (below), though I don't know the difference between them. Thanks again so much for your help.

One last question. after filling out the descriptions for all my device addresses, is there a way to backup/restore the information if need be? Many thanks.
Its pretty easy to add a hidden sort index and just use hex, or add natural sort.. No hostnames though, kind of useless. I am using FING now just need a front end
You might want to share that to the github as an idea for the developer :)
@@DBTechYT yeah i went to the repo to see about doing a PR... but the source is in Go.
The new SIEM, easy mode
There is any reason why you didn't updated your portainer ?
Laziness mostly. This is my tutorial server setup and I just hadn't updated it yet :)
@@DBTechYT nice I'm using 2.15.1 and the UI is great, talking about laziness, I leard lazytainer with you, but how about a video explaining a whay to do the same with traefik and a plugin traefik-ondemand ? could be a really good content ! thanks for your work by the way
Does it span vlans?
I think it will if you put in the vlan adapter as it shows in the "IFACE" on here: github.com/aceberg/WatchYourLAN/blob/main/docker-compose.yml
By the name of the app I was expecting a sort of tool that was monitoring your LAN to check if one device was compromised by a virus or something 😉
That's totally fair. Thanks for watching and commenting!!
You made it look easy, but on my Ubuntu server in a docker, it only sees my router and the actually server for some reason. I know I have more than 2 devices :) weird.
Interesting. Not sure why it wouldn't list everything.
Stupid (network noob) question… can this report nodes on other LAN segments/subnets? (And group them, ideally?)
This will only access networks your device is directly connected to.
@@DBTechYT Thanks for responding! Could you use use multiple containers in a single host and have each of them connected to a different LAN segment? Or would the host’s connection prevent that? (Sorry, another stupid noob question.) Obviously you could put a container on a host on each segment but you couldn’t consolidate them into a single dashboard, could you? Maybe with a little custom HTML with multiple frames?
“+420 new subscribers”
Nice.
😏😏😏
similar to angry IP scanner
Ok, but it seems to find devices on the same subnet/LAN only, which makes it useless in most cases. Anyway, thanks for sharing it.
Yeah. It can only scan devices on your local network. What would you want it to do?
I guess it similar to Pi.Alert
Sorta, yeah. Thanks for watching and commenting!! 🥳🥳🥳
i pay for YT Premium so i dont have to watch ads. Sorry, i click out when you show me an ad. Good luck!
That's definitely a YOU problem. If you're so up your own ass that you don't want to support creators and help them earn a living and pay their bills, then you won't be missed.
@@DBTechYT Did I say I wouldnt support a Patreon accout? No, I didnt. I just dont want to see ads. But now, that I see you have a foul mouth and a true lack of respect for your viewers, I wont be viewing any of your videos. Might just share this note with your advertisers!
You feel free to do whatever you want.
You could have just left the video when the ad popped up, but you decided to make a scene about it instead of just leaving.
That was your choice.
My choice was to tell you that your attitude wouldn't be missed. I gain and lose views and subs every waking moment of every day. That is the life of being a creator. I learned that a long time ago.
You can contact whoever you want, but the reality is that I'm not working with advertisers right now and haven't in months while I refocus my efforts in different areas.
My primary focus right now is recovering from spending most of January in the hospital with multiple respiratory failures. Feel free to look through my Community tab here on the channel for more details. I've even got a completely separate YT channel where I gave updates.
So you feel free to write an email or social media post to whomever you'd like. I hope that fills whatever itch you have to get retribution for someone saying the word "ass" in your general direction.
I've spent some time thinking about this whole thing and I've got a genuine question: Are you going through a rough patch? I'm not trying to be mean or attacking. I'm genuinely asking. We all deal with stuff in our lives that affects us in ways we're not always happy about when we look back on it later. Are you currently dealing with something like that? Is there something I can do to help you get through it? Do you want to talk about it and maybe see if there's something that you might be able to do to help ease whatever tension you're having about the underlying situation? Again, I'm genuinely asking here. I know I'm going through a lot right now and maybe you are as well.
just ca off for a spliff to watch tNice tutorials then I'm back on boi
You're the second person in the last week to mention "tNice tutorials" and I have no idea what that is.
