I think all the praise for Cole being able to walk again is nice but you guys are missing the point. Cole has a great life, regardless of his disability. Sometimes with the loss of something is the gain of perspective, sometimes that can be even more valuable.
Thank YOU! It’s frustrating hearing “you will walk again” & “just believe”. I’ve prayed to walk again. I’ve believed. But guess what, here I am, still in my wheelchair. And that’s okay! More than okay. It’s not about how hard I believe. I’ve learned to love my life WITH my disability. I didn’t give up, and never will, but constantly hoping for something for 11 years is exhausting. There comes a point where acceptance and perspective is far more important than walking. And with how full my life is today, why wouldn’t I be happy, walking or not?

My dad is a quadriplegic. He broke C3 and C4. Every time I watch your videos, I just think, you have the ability to hug people. For people that haven't ever had themselves or a friend or family member have a severe spinal cord injury, they don't understand what a big deal that is to people. It breaks my heart that my dad will never hug me again. He'll never hug his grandson. But I'm so grateful that you will be able to do those things with your family. And you also have the hand-to-mouth movement which is awesome. My dad doesn't. So ever bite of food he eats, has to be fed to him. Your outlook and perspective is just truly inspiring. I've learned that really does mean more than almost anything else. So many people that are in the spot you and my dad are in, literally just want to end their lives. It's heartbreaking. But just see guys like you, although I know everyday is still a struggle, but be willing to look at the positive things in life and remind yourself daily all of the amazing things and people that you have to live for. To not use this as an excuse to just become a recluse and do nothing forever, shows how incredibly strong you both are. I'll be praying for you!

As an incomplete C 5/6 sci who's fourteen post injury, the biggest push in my rehab was fitting me with a custom afo to help me walk. I remember it being drilled in my head how crucial those first eighteen months of getting back the majority of what you'll likely get back was. I too had walking as a high priority, but to be honest, after a couple years of trying to please others by dragging a half paralyzed body around, I had to put my foot down. It was beyond exhausting. It would take me fifteen minutes to cover the same amount of distance that a normal person could cover in a minute or two. Further more, people don't realize what we are using for locomotion is our tone, not normal nerve signaling to make our muscles contract. That's why we have such a lovely gait pattern, lol. After about thirty minutes of being on my feet in any given day, my tone gives way and my legs become like cooked noodles. I'm then unable to stand any more until I' get at least a solid eight hours of sleep to recover. It's just not worth putting myself through that day in and day out. Also I've had a great deal of tethering of my spinal cord over the last few years, furthering diminishing function. Honestly, after learning to be highly productive from wheelchair or high low power chair, I'm much happier. I now focus on doing upper body or core exercises from my chair to keep myself as strong as possible for transfers, and reserve standing/walking as activities to do with my trainer three days a week. My focus now is staying as healthy as possible, so when or if regenerative medicine provides a meaningful breakthrough for recovery I'll be ready. Dr Wise Young and his team are definitely ones I keep a keen eye on in the world of neuroscience and sci research. All my best to you and Charisma.
