We have 4 chickens now. We did have six like you said one per family member... But one was super mean to the others and we had to get rid of it. And the other one got sick and died. Haven't the heart to replace them since the 4 we have get along so well.

We’re planning on starting with 4, and when they stop laying we’ll get 4 more chicks down the road. In my area we are allowed 10 but want to keep it around 8. Going to build a 24 sq ft coop with a large run.
state minimum in NY is 6. We started with 8 about four years ago. We are down to 4 girls now. My remaining 4 I have left are looking pretty rough. Henopause, haha!!! My girls must be there!

awww like your chickens, I ordered my second batch of chickens, for this summer I started out with four,got 9 lost three, one to a hawk, one to my dog another to fact it was roo and we dont want them. I have 10 total now, will have 8 baby chicks coming this summer which will live in a seperate coop and run. these will be polish hamburg and dorking.

You can start out with that but it’s possible that the rooster will need more hens so he doesn’t stress them out too much. Depending on which kind you get!
Haha well the rooster will chase the hens around and act like a fool! LOL. Best case scenario would be about eight hens per rooster. But you might be able to get away with less. Especially if you get a bantam rooster.
Simple: 1 chicken per household member for egg consumption. It’s just my husband and I so we have,..... 6. Lol, lol, they’re so fun and cute, I can’t help it, lol.

Experiencing what happens when you have too few hens. Spur wounds under both wings. 3 new hens in quarantine and little Nugget in my basement. Any remedies you can suggest to help her heal? Pretty nasty wound on the one side. 😢 my 3 other hens are ok.
Aww poor thing. Have you seen my "Sick Chicken Action Plan" video? Definitely follow those instructions even though she is hurt not sick. I also will dose one pellet of arnica 30c (it's a homeopathic) in their water to help with shock, bruising, and pain. Make sure you clean the wound and put a healing agent on it, maybe Neosporin (without pain killer) or vetericyn. Another great thing for them would be a couple of drops of rescue remedy in their water.

Bylaw only allows 4 chickens. Ugh. I’m getting 4 right now then was offered the suggestion in a few years add 2 more chickens, which means I’m breaking bylaw. Then a few more haha. Got to find a way how to hide some chickens lol
Can I ask you a question on how you would handle this situation? I have a flock of 16. 15 hens and 1 rooster. I have 1 been who doesn't like the layer feed that I started them on after we weaned off chick feed. She will just stay in the coop all day and not eat. She is also picked on by the others now.
It’s odd for a chicken to not eat and hide in the coop. You may want to look her over and make sure she doesn’t have mites, lice, or something else going on. ❤️

Hiya Dalia. Great advice there. I started with three but immediately wanted to get more. Def discourage people starting out with two or one. Do you ever have problems because you have a mix of different sizes in your flock?
I haven’t. It does take longer to integrate itty bitty ones but with a little patience, it’s definitely doable. Every flock has a different personality so it might be different for others, but rarely.

I have a hen question for you (can answer on your next live) I was recently told that a hen produces only a certain # of eggs in their lifetime. So if we add a light to their coop in the winter months when they are 1-2 years old they will produce more eggs that year but less eggs when they are older. any idea if that is true? I dont have a light, and not planning on adding one LOL. Just curious. We started with 12 chicks (but had many fowl in the past) and then promptly added 12 more and and and now have 30 chickens 3 roos and 8 ducks. I failed chicken math101 hahaha

Well, they just would not be doing their normal chicken things, like pecking and scratching, dust bathing, and laying. They might hide in the coop or just stand around being puffed up. They may also follow you around and seem to need lots of attention. I think if your chicken is crowing that’s a really good sign.
Just had one chicken put down because she got egg bound. She was very brave and i was stroking her until....I'm still sad 4 days later and tear up when i think of her

Okay sooooo I only got 2 thinking that was a good amount... so they are 3 weeks old and doing great, should I go and pick up 2 more now or is it to late? Can i put them with my 3 wk olds or keep them seperate? They are buff orpingtons if that matters.
I want to have my chickens until they die naturally, but I'm also limited to six chickens. I really don't know what to do about consistent supply of eggs with this scenario. Guess we've got to move!
One of the biggest mistakes I made with my chickens was starting with only 3. One of the 3 turned out to be a high strung bully (don’t start with barred rocks….😐) so unfortunately her sister got singled out as the lone submissive hen and became her toy. I later added 3 more pullets to flock to try and balance out the pecking order. One turned into an accidental rooster. I didn’t want a rooster but gave him a shot in the hopes that he could sort out the pecking order drama, but my flock was far too small for an amorous young roo and he caused more problems than solved so I had to give him up. Which left me down to two and really messed with my pullet army plans. The two were an absolute nightmare to introduce thanks to miss bossypants. She stopped picking on her sister but now her AND her formerly abused sister gang up on the two newbies and bully them as teammates. Chickens are HORRIBLE. Anyway, learn from my mistakes and start with a BUNCH of chickens and avoid getting any bully breeds like the plague (I didn’t know rocks were known to be dicks to their flockmates). In contrast to the rocks that make my job difficult, my two swedish flower hens and lone easter egger are delightful!
If I’m only allowed 4 where I live then I’m looking at potentially 6 or more years of keeping chickens that don’t lay eggs. Ugh these rules are difficult. Because I won’t get rid of any they will definitely be our pets.
If you give them breaks and don't push them to lay with artificial light, they will give you a few good years of laying and even when they get old they will lay a bit, just not as much. Six years is old for a laying breed.
Try sitting in the chicken yard with some treats and let them come to you for them! Or if they are babies just be around them a lot. Handle them a lot but make sure you are letting them rest and not stressing them out.

Around 2:35 I have had any chickens and I have introduced them to other chickens and there was no issues like pecking each other or anything

How do you get them in the coop?
At dusk they go in voluntarily. :-) One they learn where home is they will return every night.

Each standard sized chicken needs at least 2 to 4 square feet inside the coop and 10 in the run. :)

I went to collect 2 hens a few months ago from a production hen rehoming event. I came home with 6 hens and a rooster 🤣

I want to have my chickens until they die naturally, but I'm also limited to six chickens. I really don't know what to do about consistent supply of eggs with this scenario. Guess we've got to move!

One of the biggest mistakes I made with my chickens was starting with only 3. One of the 3 turned out to be a high strung bully (don’t start with barred rocks….😐) so unfortunately her sister got singled out as the lone submissive hen and became her toy. I later added 3 more pullets to flock to try and balance out the pecking order. One turned into an accidental rooster. I didn’t want a rooster but gave him a shot in the hopes that he could sort out the pecking order drama, but my flock was far too small for an amorous young roo and he caused more problems than solved so I had to give him up. Which left me down to two and really messed with my pullet army plans. The two were an absolute nightmare to introduce thanks to miss bossypants. She stopped picking on her sister but now her AND her formerly abused sister gang up on the two newbies and bully them as teammates. Chickens are HORRIBLE. Anyway, learn from my mistakes and start with a BUNCH of chickens and avoid getting any bully breeds like the plague (I didn’t know rocks were known to be dicks to their flockmates). In contrast to the rocks that make my job difficult, my two swedish flower hens and lone easter egger are delightful!

If I’m only allowed 4 where I live then I’m looking at potentially 6 or more years of keeping chickens that don’t lay eggs. Ugh these rules are difficult. Because I won’t get rid of any they will definitely be our pets.
If you give them breaks and don't push them to lay with artificial light, they will give you a few good years of laying and even when they get old they will lay a bit, just not as much. Six years is old for a laying breed.
I wanted to start off with 2 but we ended up with 4.

Try sitting in the chicken yard with some treats and let them come to you for them! Or if they are babies just be around them a lot. Handle them a lot but make sure you are letting them rest and not stressing them out.
