- Since fighting erupted in Sudan in April 2023, 430,000 people fled their homes to seek refuge in neighboring Chad. Around 130,000 of them have settled in Adré camp, in eastern Chad, where they are now stranded without access to many essentials, including safe drinking water. As of September 2023, Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières (MSF) was distributing an average of 500,000 liters of water in the camp each day, but access to safe water is still far below the recommended standard by of twenty liters per person per day and must be urgently increased.
A lack of safe water can fuel the spread of waterborne diseases such as cholera. MSF is calling on international aid organizations and donors to help provide drinking water in the camp.
