I bought mine secondhand on eBay in the U.K. but it’s called a cutterpillar and they sell them in the states. Their is a cutting mat that goes on top that is really cool and if you get the more expensive version than I have you can even iron on it!
Started a large collage quilt over a year ago, I will get back around to it soon! However, I started a wall hanging that I wasn't certain what to do with and once again you provided inspiration! Thank you!
Wow Kristen, it’s beautiful! I love how you just jump in and go for it. You are such an inspiration to me and I’m sure lots of others who hesitate or are intimidated. I’m sure your lucky friend will love this gift, it’s really pretty. 👍🏻
Thank you! Nothing ventured nothing gained (or learned in my case)! I really do learn better by doing than thinking and planning. I know that isn’t for everyone but it works for me.
This is beautiful! Thank you for sharing the “confident beginner” experience. It is encouraging to watch you work through the challenges, and have something that you are proud of in the end. You are coaching me to let go of my perfectionism.
I started to watch videos on collage quilts and I am in love with them, but I had no clue where to start… now watching your video, you made it look like ‘ just go for it’. Turned out fantastic. Your video is very much appreciated. Thank you! I would say your long arm is way too low. I have mine a lot higher than recommended and it works great for me.
Oh Kristen, this quilt is absolutely stunning. Such a lot of work to create, but such a beautiful outcome. I want to try this now. Thank you so much for sharing your process.
I love that you get inspired and just jump in and try things. Your piece is beautiful! I am so impressed with how comfortable you are with your long arm after such a short time. I have had my HQ Simply Sixteen for a few years and I am not as skilled as your are. When I first got mine I had so much trouble, I thought it was due to user error. It was very frustrating to constantly have thread breaking and other issues. After months I paid for the technician from the store I bought it from to come to my home to give me a lesson. She realized that it was defective and HQ had to replace it. I had been so frustrated, It took me a long time to want to use it. My machine and I are now friends and I actually enjoy quilting.
That sounds like a rough start! Of course you would get frustrated if there was something wrong with it. Sounds like me and my Bernina 770 - it was a bit of a lemon and I had so many problems with it- in the end I traded it in. Glad you’ve made friends with your machine again!
You never cease to amaze me! That is so beautiful. I love all the vibrant colors you used. How great is it that you have such beautiful scraps! I want to do one but I want the background, a landscape, to be the pieced bits. I found some little tiny crochet dresses at a garage sale so have a vision to put a clothesline over the landscaped bit and hang the dresses from it. Just a little wall hanging for my sewing room wall. PS...I like my face to be in front of the needle bar when I'm longarming. I sit on a stool with wheels and use one foot to move the chair along as I work from one end of the quilt to the other. You'll end up with some serious issues to your body twisting your head like you are. Either lower your body or raise your longarm!
Thanks for this! I think your clothes idea sounds lovely - I can imagine it from your description. And I think you are right about the height of the longarm - this is my second proper project on it and this time I really noticed I was crouching! Just wanted to ask some folk who might know better so thanks for the feedback! I will try raising it.
Oh it turned out beautiful. I have done a couple of these types of projects. Your quilting reminded me of thread painting. Just as a side point I really loved your wavy hair. I have not seen that before in your videos. I too am a redhead.
OH MY Gosh Kristen, This is Beautiful 🎉 ❤❤❤ Wow, I haven’t seen anyone do this before. I really love how this project turned out. Brilliant. Oh boy, your content is so much fun! (I’ve been a little busy so I’ve missed a few videos I didn’t realize so I will be going to your channel to make sure I catch up on all the fun stuff you do). 👏🥰👍 Thank You So Much, Great Job, 🥰 Chris
Thanks so much! So glad you liked it! There are tons of great folk doing collage quilting way better than this - it’s definitely worth a look! Thanks for watching!!
Wow, what a beautiful wall hanging. I do hope your friend enjoys it. Another excellent vlog, thank you. What a wonderful eye for colour you have and so much patience. There is no way anyone would think this was your first collage quilt!
What an amazing collage. Your color and texture sense was spot on. Hard to believe it was your first. You have a true artist sense. Love it. Awesome project! Your friend will love it too, am sure.
I haven't tried collage quilting yet, but you have inspired me. Thank you! I just finished my first two custom quilted wall hangings on my Moxie and was pleasantly surprised by the results. You are right that sometimes we just have to put our fear aside and try new things 🤗
Kristen, You did an amazing job on the collage!👍It Looks Awesome! I Love 💕 that You show and speak of all the details of your experience! Thank You so Much for Sharing!
Beautiful job I’m sure your friend will be thrilled with this masterpiece. I love your attitude, just jump in and try it. Enjoying your channel from Weymouth, Massachusetts just outside of Boston. God bless you and yours.
I have always meant to try collage quilting but never have. This turned out wonderful. I would never have guessed it was a first if I had just saw it hanging in a quilt show or something.
Absolutely stunning! Wouldn’t have believed that this is your first go at collage quilting. I do a fair bit of appliqué and collage, and your technique is spot on! Love that floral design. ❤
Thanks for sharing this video. I have wanted to try this technique. I enjoy doing applique so I have SO MANY scraps and some even have Steam-a-Seam 2 on them. BTW - the tying the threads together and pulling them thru trick is often used when threading a Serger. It's much easier than going thru all those thread guides.
I’ve never sewn on a serger but I can imagine it would help to do the tied thread thing! I was so pleased when that actually worked 😂. Love that you have scraps with steam a seam already on them - you are good to go! Have fun with it!
Wow! Well done. Great project and video, thanks. I have tried 1 collage quilt but never finished it. I have a tiny quilting space and the mess was overwhelming. But I learned a lot. You have inspired me to try again. Thanks.
UMM......AHmazing❣️ I have never tried this but have always wanted to...being creative is messy, but the end result was so worth it. It is beautiful and I am sure your friend will love it!!
I have always meant to try collage quilting but never have. I think this turned out wonderful. I would never have guessed it was your first collage quilt if I just saw it hanging somewhere.
That's soooo beautiful!! I hadnt heard of this before but you've motivated me to try a collage quilt in the near future! I'm so thankful for your videos especially since we both have a similar method of just going for it, you really inspire me to try new techniques so i dont get bored. Also, your hair is gorgeous here, I love the big long waves! 💕💕
Awesome job!! I am in the process of mastering HSTs. Appliqué and free motion quilting and land scape quilts are on my list of to do’s. I am going to try free motion quilting very soon once I finish a quilt top I am working on and hope to FMQ that one, after some practice blocks first. Lovely colors and nice design!! Also, in art quilts anything goes it seems!! I am a confident beginner who has only been doing this about a year or so and watching your videos just gives me more confidence.
That was amazing!! Loved watching you figure it out!! I think you could raise the table a bit to make it more comfortable for you. If your uncomfortable then it's not at the right height
Really lovely…You have a very lucky friend. I have been wanting to try this but commercial patterns seemed too intimidating so as usual you break it down and instill the courage to give it a go…🎉 From Idaho US❤
Wow you did a great job first time! I have two patterns I’m yet to try out. And book by the collage quilter . I find she very good with tips as well. And talking about light dark and medium hues with fabric. I have one those light boxes, I love for use and for paper piecing. I have art easel and I have a project board with batting to put the fabric on for the pattern.always like watching your video.!!
Hi,,I'm the one that told you I got my used longarm a janome,, the same time you got yours,, anyway mine is right at my chest,,pretty much right at the under part of my breast,,my husband looked at where I told him it should be and then adjusted the legs of my longarm,,well my son and my husband both adjusted the legs anyway it worked out great,,I had joined some longarm groups on Facebook and had read this was the best height, so you could see and not be hunched over, anyway hope this helps you ,May God Bless and keep you,,Renee
I love how your collage turned out. It's beautiful!!! For the Moxie, they say your arms should be at roughly 90* or somewhere close to it. As far as the looking down part I think that is normal. I find I look dow as well as well and I am only 5'5" (165cm). You are doing really well! I'm looking forward to your other projects.
This technique kind of reminds me of the old “snippy” technique from years ago, where you basically put iron on backing to larger pieces of fabric and then just stand over the background while cutting (snipping) pieces off, hoping that they more or less fall into place. This is far more controlled and prettier than that, but it brought that to mind. It occurred to me that I haven’t seen anyone doing that lately, probably for good reason.
WOW! That is amazing! Your friend will be thrilled when she receives it. At the end, I rewound to look at the pic of the logo with your collage again. Phenomenal! Would love to have seen you add the two together at the end. Perhaps something to consider for similar projects in the future? Since you don’t have to iron on the Steam-a-Seam 2, could you use and ultralight fusible as your base for the collage? Then you could iron it on your backing before loading it on your long arm. Just a thought… Thanks, and stay well! Muskoka ON 🇨🇦
That’s a good idea for both adding it on the back and having the logo at the end! I did iron the steam seam 2 by the way it just wasn’t in the video as I had to cut so much footage as I recorded too much ! 😂
I've seen a similar technique where they used tulle over the top to control the little pieces. I'm in California and would have tried school glue which is a type of starch that glues fabric and can be ironed and then washes out completely. I think you are right about using bigger pieces of fabric for the leaves. Would a copy of the leaf in tissue paper separate to use as a pattern piece while cutting out the elements have helped do you thing? If it were me I would have used a pale green or orange for the background to tie it in a bit more even while giving contrast needed for the flower to stand out. Nice work!! So love that you take us along for your process. Thank you for making the video!
Someone else mentioned tulle - not sure I totally understand what it does. I think what would help most would be finding something where I could trace directly on the baking paper but none of the writing implements I had to hand seemed to work!
Beautiful Kristen! I haven’t tried collage quilting yet but you’ve inspired me. For tacking down the appliqué maybe spray basting would have done the job?
I think there was a little at one point but I just stopped and adjusted and was able to continue on. I put it down to changing my thread color so often not necessarily the layers. I find the more I swap thread the more I have to keep fiddling with the tension dial!
Beautiful! I'm glad that this video appeared on my feed, because I want to try this technique. I enjoy your channel, you do a great job. (Just as a constructive criticism, at the middle of the video I started counting how many times you said umm, and I counted 20. Maybe you can read your script to avoid this in future videos.) Keep up the good work.
Glad you liked it. Thanks also for the feedback. I don’t have a script - for a voiceover one like this I basically put the clips together and then describe what I’m doing as if I’m talking to a friend. So I’m guessing those umms are a verbal tick I have in real life too 😂. I’ll try to be a bit more aware of it. Thanks for being polite about it.
Do you mean the longarm? It’s from Handiquilter so if you have handiquilter dealers there then you can. You don’t need the longarm to do this though - you can totally do it on a regular sewing machine!
Have you tried collage quilting? Did you enjoy it? What is your best tip?
Where did you get your light box? I love that? This is so neat! 😍
I bought mine secondhand on eBay in the U.K. but it’s called a cutterpillar and they sell them in the states. Their is a cutting mat that goes on top that is really cool and if you get the more expensive version than I have you can even iron on it!
Thank you so much. You were so quick to reply!! ❤️
You caught me on my phone 😂!
Started a large collage quilt over a year ago, I will get back around to it soon! However, I started a wall hanging that I wasn't certain what to do with and once again you provided inspiration! Thank you!
Beautiful no one would have guessed it is your first attempt
Thanks so much!
I love your hair today! Beautiful!
😂 thanks! This is what it looks like when I don’t take time to straighten it 🤦🏼♀️
I've never heard of collage quilting. It's so cool. Your wall hanging is so pretty.

I love it and I think I will have to try this. Thanks for sending me down another rabbit hole 🤣🇦🇺
😂your welcome! It really was lots of fun you won’t regret it.

Aw thanks!!
You are amazing! No one would know that this was your first collage quilt. You did an excellent job. I love love it
Thanks so much! I think it is easier than it looks! I had a lot of fun with it.
Your mess is a sign of great productivity ❤❤❤
That’s what I will tell my husband next time he comes into my sewing room and gets that shocked look on his face 😂
This is beautiful! Thank you for sharing the “confident beginner” experience. It is encouraging to watch you work through the challenges, and have something that you are proud of in the end. You are coaching me to let go of my perfectionism.
Aw thanks! So glad I can help you let go of some perfectionism! Sometimes the “mistakes “ turn out the best 😂!
I am absolutely amazed o how well this turned out. I know your friend will love this.
Thanks! She actually did get it before the video went out thankfully! She did say she likes it so I’m pleased.
I love your pattern! GREAT JOB KRISTEN. It's GORGEOUS ❣❣🥰
Thanks so much!!

This turned out great. It looked like such fun; both the choosing colors and the actual quilting. Loved the result. Thanks for sharing your process!
It was fun! Thanks so much for watching!
Love your little wall hanging it came out great! Gave me creative ideas to use, bring in colors for those cold winter days! Thank you!
Thank you!
What a lovely gift x

Oh Kristen, this quilt is absolutely stunning. Such a lot of work to create, but such a beautiful outcome. I want to try this now. Thank you so much for sharing your process.
Thanks so much. I really did enjoy making it even though it took longer than I expected!
Kristen, this is so neat, and thanks for sharing. I would love to see a tutorial on how you faced the collage quilt to finish it off.
If,this was your first collage what will the third one be like…? just amazing work ❤️❤️
Aw thank you so much 💕

This is beautiful work , I've never been brave enough to do collage . Thank you for this video !
Thank you! Just give it a try! I think it was a pretty forgiving technique really.

Thanks for this. Your project turned out great. I have a few of these patterns. Maybe now I will have the courage to jump in and start one.
Oh do! It was so fun. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for sharing this video. I have wanted to try this technique. I enjoy doing applique so I have SO MANY scraps and some even have Steam-a-Seam 2 on them.

Yes it’s a lot of mess! But I felt like it was worth it in the end! Thanks for watching!
Great tutorial....thank u...Susanne from Texas
Glad you liked it! Thanks!
Beautiful work

That’s amazing, love it!
Thank you!
UMM......AHmazing❣️ I have never tried this but have always wanted to...being creative is messy, but the end result was so worth it. It is beautiful and I am sure your friend will love it!!
Thanks! I must be super creative then as my sewing room always seems to look like a tornado hit it 😂! I do tidy occasionally….
I have always meant to try collage quilting but never have. I think this turned out wonderful. I would never have guessed it was your first collage quilt if I just saw it hanging somewhere.

That was amazing!! Loved watching you figure it out!! I think you could raise the table a bit to make it more comfortable for you. If your uncomfortable then it's not at the right height
Thanks! Yes I am coming to that conclusion about the height too!!
Beautiful!!!

Wow you did a great job first time! I have two patterns I’m yet to try out. And book by the collage quilter . I find she very good with tips as well. Never heard of the snippy technique but loads of folk do collage quilting these days. Nothing new under the sun as they say!
Great job lovely
Thanks!!
Good job!
Thanks!!
This is fabulous! Won’t attempt this though. Not patient enough😅 may try with smaller design using larger pieces? If that makes sense….we’ll done!!
Yes larger pieces would have made it quicker for sure!
Thanks!
Thanks so much Rhonda! 💕

You did a fantastic job.
I too would like to know what others think of your frame/machine height. I feel that mine may be set too high.
Interesting…I wouldn’t want it to be too high either. Still of two minds about mine.
Very nice.😀
Thanks!
Love it Kristen 🤩 great video!!
Thanks so much!!
I have done something similar, using tulle over the top of the cut pieces.
Of Van Gogh's Stary Nights wall hanging
Cool! Is the tulle for the look of it or is there a function to it as well?
Very Nice
Thanks!
I'm chicken to throw a 7 layer collage quilt on my longarm. How was figuring out the tension? Any tension issues?
Please and thank you.
I would raise the height of the longarm. I'm 5 foot even and I raised my longarm..less fatigue after raising
Thanks! I might try it!
Never done it is it hard
It took longer than I thought but it was actually easier than I thought!
Can you buy that machine in Australia and is it hard to set up and use.
Do you mean the longarm? It’s from Handiquilter so if you have handiquilter dealers there then you can. You don’t need the longarm to do this though - you can totally do it on a regular sewing machine!
