  • Taken from the EP "Til Nord", out now: orcd.co/tilnord
Hemnarsverdet is an old Norwegian folk tale hailing from the region of Telemark. It is a story about a personal vendetta, blood revenge and the fatal consequences of these motifs.
A stranger arrives at a gathering of people with a serious errand.
He’s looking for the man who took the life of his father. Faced with his father’s murderer the stranger begs his sword for aid in his lethal mission. The sword answers that it must be forged and made much stronger first. When this is done, the stranger swings the sword and kills - not only the murderer, but also all the others present including an infant.
Making the stranger beg the sword to stop in the name of God. The sword stops and says that if he had not mentioned God’s name, the stranger himself would have been killed.
The fact that the sword seemingly acts of its own free will and kills relentlessly, is a telling expression of how much damage blood revenge could cause, and that only the word of God has the power to put an end to this savagery.

Gåtes song is based on a written version of this tale from 1853.
In the video the stranger seeking revenge is dressed in black, while the murderer is dressed in white. Soon a battle commences between the two men, starting off with Halling, a traditional Norwegian folk dance, before they fight to death.
Though the deadly outcome of the dance may seem farfetched in this day and age, the reality was quite different back when Hemnarsverdet was sung far and wide.
In fact, in the 18th century more than 50 killings were recorded as a result of battels between Halling dancers. Which may also explain why some of the songs from this era also depicts Halling and Halling music as sinful and dangerous activities, where you were likely to be lured into sinful actions or alliances with the Devil.

    An attempt at English lyrics:
"Hemnarsverdet - The sword of vengeance"
    There comes an unassuming/young man
    He never speaks many words
    - my horse is ready, bound to a hitching post -
Is he arriving or is he departing?
Already tears are trickling down his cheek
    - my horse is ready, bound to a hitching post -
Long have I roamed and ridden
My father's bane I've never found
    - my horse is ready, bound to a hitching post -
What would you do for/to him
If you were to find him
    - my horse is ready, bound to a hitching post -
To him I'd be so soft and kind
I'd brace and support him going in or out
    - my horse is ready, bound to a hitching post -
The man rose up, dressed in a cape of blue
    Here, behold your father's bane
    - my horse is ready, bound to a hitching post -
    - Sil, Sil, Sil -
He chopped the animals in the pen
then he walked into the house
    - my horse is ready, bound to a hitching post -
He chopped around the table and benches
No escape for neither poor nor rich
    - my horse is ready, bound to a hitching post -
Did the child cradled in the crib speak
Raging(/crazy) boy, why are you doing this?
    - my horse is ready, bound to a hitching post -
Hush now, hush now little kid
You shall be... my last guest
    - Sil, Sil, Sil -
*Sil seems to be a variant of the word "vil" in these texts, which is again connected to will, want, willpower, desire and motivation. It doesn't need to have a deeper meaning than being a useful phonetic tool for Gunnhild's Kveding/singing, but I'd like to think the moments we get those Sil's are meant to be cathartic (and/or horrific) examples of will to commit vengeance being followed through with action.
This is a harder text to interpret than Gåte's previous music video "Kjærleik", so no guarantee this is very accurate. I don't try to make it rhyme but I try to make good English sentences. My biggest doubt is the "Naa gjerest en mo min Gangar " / "my horse is ready, bound to a hitching post" sentence. it could be "again my horse is tied to the hitching post" or something like that. I think it makes sense that the horse is a sort of getaway car and/or a sign of a haunted/homeless man; always on the move, considering the context.

What does, "My father's bane I've never found", mean?

    • @SteinarHusby
      @SteinarHusby 5 месяцев назад +6

@@BlindButNotMute archaic English: "Bane: something, especially poison, which causes death." so you would say someone's bane was their cause of death. so "My father's cause of death I've never found" or "My father's murderer I've never found" would be a less poetic way of saying it.
