I discovered this crate-digging at a local thrift shop today. Most of what I picked up is jazz records I've never heard of (actually I was just guessing and had to look up the artists later to be sure), plus a Christmas compilation from Bing Crosby... Needless to say this really jumped out. From the cover it was so obvious the movie was from the 80s. The aesthetic was undeniable just looking at the package. I'd never heard of this movie, nor could I recognize any actors on the front or back. But they had me at Andy Taylor. His solo for Belinda Carlisle's Mad About You is enough for my interest to be piqued when I see his name all over a record. This original pressing is in my lap as I type, and it's an amazing condition for a record released just a year before I was born. Now the question is whether to watch the movie or listen to the album first...
Im almost 💯 they got the release date wrong on this movie. It played in theaters in like 1983 or 84 not 1986.....I was a freshman in 1986 and had moved from a small town to a bigger city in 86 to start hs. I distinctly remember watching this movie at the main st theater in small ILL town in grade school with my friend Chris from school who lived 2 houses Away. If this really wasn't released until 1986 I'm going insane.
I was in this movie, my school was the back round audience. WILSON ELEMENTARY. I remember they gave us Kentucky fried chicken for lunch. Anybody else remember that? PHX union high school gym is where it was filmed.
The internet says it was released in 1986 but I distinctly remember seeing this movie at a small town movie theater on main st when I was either in 6-7 or 8th grade. I was a freshman in 1986 and had moved in 86 to a bigger city and 💯 know I didn't see it at a theater in 86.
I went to this movie because I knew it had music by artists I liked. I also liked gymnastics. But I didn’t like the movie itself. My friend and I were so bored halfway through that we started wandering around the theater. I think there was only one other person there, lol. My friend walked out and rearranged the marquee over the doorway to the theater room. They could only fit “American” on it instead of “American Anthem.” He changed it to “Can I Ram.” I don’t know what he did with the left over “e.” 😂
I remember seeing this at the movies. The 80's movies cannot be topped. 💞

We had this on VHS when I was a kid, and I've been looking for it again ever since!
30 years later still one of my favorite movies and soundtracks.

Soundtracks good anyway..
Best of the Best is better than that...(and worst than Karate kid) ;)

this may not be a good movie, but the editing on this trailer is AWESOME
Best movie ever
C’mon dude! You’re gonna pretend that a masterpiece called Howard the Duck was never made?
Mitch was and is so gorgeous.
This may be the most 80s thing I've ever seen.
yes, this is even more 80s than kung fury - enough said!
The 80's were phenomenal for everything from clothes, music, movies, hairstyles, not so much but everything else was absolutely Stupendous!
Yes, it’s true for a month or two I was in love with that girl I still am😂
I was 11 when this movie came out, sister was 15, all I remember was the take it easy song
this was my favorite movie as a kid.... and I have no idea why
cuzzntrip what about Rad?
@@daneb2484 OMG, haven't seen that movie in decades.
Just like a good balance beam routine, "Anthem" somehow manages to be "realistic"-ish and completely over-the-top bonkers at the same ...
Lol...IKR.
this is a great movie about going after your dreams
My Real Cousin Tiny Wells, miss him so much......💙💙💙💙
Shawn Arthur Wells would you please tell us which character he played? Was he Arthur who played the music? Or the gymnast Curt?
I love the Stevie Nicks song on the soundtrack, Battle of the Dragons
80s films make you feel like you can conquer the world.
Very good movie
never stop

That's Ivan Dragos trainer
No, it's the Russian defector from WKRP. LOL
Janet Jones so hot in this movie.
nice
Ehere i can watch it full?
They sure don't show it any more. On normal tv.
I wonder if Janet Jones ever told her hubby Wayne it was never going to be great.
well. not many people recall this picture. lol
I saw it as a kid. Never knew that was Mitch Gaylord the U.S. Team. I just thought the high bar in the forest was awesome.
I have the VHS still and the soundtrack. I even met Janet Jones in 1998.
How has this escaped the How Did This Get Made podcast?
If you don't like it fair enough, But is your opinion!
I like it. Many films I feel that shouldn't of been made -example: Battlefield Earth
Dan Soder carries the Bonfire....Crackle Crackle Bitch!
What's the song called in the trailer and whose the artist
INXS Same Direction
Jill Milnes thanks buddy
Wayne Gretzky did ok.
shinobi Paul
No wonder this has 0% on Rotten Tomatoes.
It's a shame. This was a great movie from the 80's about a great Olympic athlete. Doesn't deserve a 0.
And you go by their verdict ?
Well, it is called American Anthem, that is enough for haters to dismiss.
Surely Gaylord is not his real name. It's a joke, right?
It's his real name. He represented USA in the Olympics
He has a whole skill named after him
Mitch GAYlord
Whaaa?
Awful
Terrible movie
Waww, cuántos recuerdos ❤
