Some of us will be called to make a stand for Christ which may confound many. May my theology be rooted and grounded in Christ so that I may be found worthy to be called Christian!

Dietrich Bonhoeffer is one of the greats of the twentieth Century.
A devout theologian and truly inspirational person, he lived his life at a most terrible time. Yet never shirking his yoke.

Bonhoeffer was ripe for the times he lived. Having understood the world better than the world was understanding itself, Bonhoeffer knew the severity of what ‘religion’ had done to Christianity-thereby promoting a secularization of it. What is Christianity that has outgrown its cheap religious garment, but an authentic one that is ‘costly’. A Christianity that is ‘costly’, authenticates the believer in Christ Jesus, because the discipleship involved costs the follower their life. Jesus said: ‘He who finds his life will lose it. And whoever loses his for my sake, will find it.’
Bonhoeffer wrote within the structure of his theology on a ‘world come age’ through a ‘religionless’ Christianity. He knew the direction where the world was going, seeing the need of secularizing Christianity from religion, at a time when his contemporaries made every effort to cling unto it, running the risk of turning religion into idolatry. What Bonhoeffer had foresight on, were issues that were well ahead of his time. It explains why Bonhoeffer’s writings were so radical at first, but now we see the point by which he was making-which makes perfect sense in the 21st century.
A man of being a first class intellectual, Bonhoeffer made the writings of his works a permanent testament of his convictions. And by being executed by the Nazi’s, enabled him to become a much more ‘important figure for future times’.

Excellent analysis. The current direction of Christianity needs Christ like leadership, not what’s being feed the flock!

In the U.S. we too deal with secularism disguised as the Church. I wonder what Bonhoeffer would say about U.S. Evangelical leaders using their position in the ministry and in Christian circles to promote a candidate that has devoted his life to a cult, Mormonism. I wonder what he would say about lies and attacks of the U.S.'s first black president from this community. And I wonder if he would heed a warning about the LOVE of money that motivates them. In his life and writings, he already did...

    Bonhoeffer was a universalist.

Not sure what makes you say that , however, why would a man be willing to give his life because he preached about God if he was a universalist .

An interesting discussion of Bonhoeffer's life, but I was a little disappointed by the thinness of the lecture's discussion of theology. The biographical material I've encountered elsewhere; i was hoping for more engagement with Bonhoeffer's literary works.

Try Eberhard Bethge's biography of Bonhoeffer. Bethge introduces each work, and covers Bonhoeffer's interaction -- meetings -- with German systematic theologians.

Odd, that this knoewledgeable Dr Hull, witholds a word about his deep love for a young woman, whi I do not no why, as I believe they exchanged hundreds of love letters. Also, the debate: At what point does a Christian decide that execution of another man, ie Hitler, IS A HUGE ETHICAL QIUESTION,

Maybe if you would have lived in Nazi Germany, you would have known why. Hitler was by all classifications a murderer, who didn’t necessarily take over by legal means. And what about the takeover of other countries? Was he their legitimate leader? Were they not allowed to stand up for themselves? Or does it become a vicious cycle of take over and just keep letting it happen?
