      Putting aside costs of development and all that, of course, if they get the tech to be good and accurate enough on the "face recognition" part, doing what you say is pretty easy overall.
      Of course, bringing it back into the conversation, the costs of development (code, animations, models, etc) would be quite high.
      You want to know what I can see being done with a realtime imaging AI getting whatever you have on the table right?
      Imagine this: You print some generic battlemat with bright distinctive lines marking where some building or ruin is, you set up everything at home, and your opponent does the same at theirs. Then you both play physically at each of your homes. And the app matches battlemats, splices the videos, and shows a single table where you both are playing.
      If it can recognize LOS and distances correctly, it can tell you if you're putting anything on a place it could not stand (a wall, another model, etc).
      You can now play with somebody else on the other side of the planet, realtime, with your physical models, instead of TTS

    I think it could be really interesting to use AI and simulation for game/rule/model/pts testing.
    Similarly, it would be way easier and cheaper to theorize about new models successfully fitting into army gaps if you could plug a blank-thing into a test scenario and draw from known traits, etc., to see how it fits in “live” gameplay without having to have your product team create the model first.

    I actually think this type of program would be most useful from the data/analytics side of things. Imagine being able to playtest a list for several games and then be able to generate a report based on the data collected- and I don't just mean simple things like wins/loss, score totals, or which secondaries you scored. You could see what percentage of the time your midboard unit was on the objective, how much of that time they were controlling it, and how much damage they received per turn on average. You could run the numbers for your damage unit and see if they made their points back and if they were above, on, or below the statistical wound output vs their selected target. You could see what units scored the most points over the course of your sample size- maybe those Jump-Pack Intercessors aren't really scoring a ton of secondary points after all...
    I see tons of possibilities, my main concern is the extra hoops you have to jump through to run the software. Moving down to a 2D gameboard is a dealbreaker for me, but even setting that aside, getting the equipment set up is a big ask. I am unsure whether there would be interest among the playerbase given the limitations of what the program offers currently.

    To me it sounds a lot like trying to find a middle point between the tabletop game as it is, and the idea of just coding up a full Warhammer 40K simulator as a videogame. Not like how it's done in Tabletop Simulator, but automating all the things that can be automated. I guess it's because there is no way that GW would let the simulator idea happen properly, but this middleground seems to not only strike a poor balance of the advantages and disadvantages of the two aforementioned methods of playing, but introduces a few problems of its own. I can see it being taken up in niche circles, and maybe that's a step towards the Warhammer Simulator that would suit me so well, but I'm not convinced it'll go any further, and there's still a long way to go even if it does.

    Speaking as a software engineer, I'm seeing a lot of big problems here. Three big ones:
    1. A lot of big claims are made about solving problems that we have playing 40k, like measuring, LOS etc. Obviously 40k is a game where precision is important. Can this product actually deliver that precision? Could really use a demo showing this actually working.
    2. 40k is a massively complicated game. The idea that one guy is going to create an application for playing simulated digital games of 40k ON TOP OF building this digital platform is frankly laughable. Maybe a version that has no stratagems or special rules.
    3. The biggest problem in my mind: Why does this exist? What is the use case? Why do I need an elaborate camera setup with AI to tell me if I am in range of an objective marker? I have neoprene objective markers for that. It's cool that it can read dice... but why? For what purpose? Am I really going to roll my dice and then look at my laptop screen to tell me what I rolled? I already know how to read dice haha. Even if you ignore the big setup required, think about how to use every feature you need to introduce a screen between you and your tabletop. That's a massive amount of friction for what seems like little gain. No one plays 40k with an ipad in front of their face. I need to be gaining something incredible to make that worth it.

      I tried to design something similar and there three big issues imho :
      - People want to roll some dice...
      -You don't play 40K to have screens everywhere and rely on electronics...
      -If you have such a complicated system why would you use 40K rules (especially 10th)? The rules have been overly simplified to make the game faster if algorithms are doing all the calculations etc why would you use 10th rules?

    • @henrychurch6062
      @henrychurch6062 Месяц назад

      Look at something like Pathfinder: Wrath of the Righteous where you either need a significant background in playing 3.5/Pathfinder or dozens of hours of trial and error to really understand all the rules and nuances of the system.
      If Pathfinder can be ported to PC, then Warhammer wouldn't even be difficult. It wouldn't even be a big project, mostly just data entry to pick up all the weird niche rules. We even have the models and art already done and ready to be ported in.
      Think about it for a moment: Final Fantasy Tactics was WAY more complex than Warhammer 40k is now... and they did that on a Playstation One in 1997. Hell, Tactics Ogre is more complicated than Warhammer 40k... and that came out for the Super Nintendo at a WHOPPING 1.2mb.
      Everything in 40k is just D6 rolls.
      return rand() % 6 + 1;
      There. I just coded it. Got 30 attacks? Call that 30 times. make 20 wound rolls? Call it 20 more times. Need to make 5 saves? Call it 5 times. Need to charge? Call it twice and add them.
      Also while this is obviously a gross oversimplification... it's really not much more complicated that this.

    • @asbrozek64
      @asbrozek64 Месяц назад

       @henrychurch6062 The issue is not the complexity of the attack formulas. It's a question of user experience (UX). Rolling a dice sided die in code is easy. Creating a product that is a faithful recreation of a game that is designed to be played on a tabletop between two in person humans is not. Think about your typical turn in 40k. Now think about how you would preform that turn in a digital interface. And think about it IN DETAIL. How do you trigger stratagems that are supposed to be reactions to player actions, such as overwatch? Does the game need to pause every time after your opponent makes a move to see if you want to overwatch? How does it handle squad coherency? How do I slow roll saves if some of my unit is in cover and some is not? What about the micro movement of the pile in and consolidate steps of fighting?
      These are not impossible problems to handle, but there of dozens if not hundreds of micro problems like this to solve that go way beyond "roll 10 attacks hit, wound and save"
      Magic Arena has an entire team and it is far from perfect. One guy is going to make a digital version on the side of his real project, which is the camera itself?

    • @henrychurch6062
      @henrychurch6062 Месяц назад

      @@asbrozek64 We already have things in other video games. It doesn't require some in depth highly reactive AI. It's just scripting.
      How would you control things like when to use strategems? Use a stack. Like Magic the Gathering. This works just fine. And if you think about it IN DETAIL... it will work just fine, in literally every situation.
      Attack Hit rolled
      (Press [space] to pass)
      Attack Wounds rolled
      (Press [space] to pass)
      And instead of pressing space, you can select from a list of your applicable strategems or actions at each pause... just like on tabletop.
      And this simple stack interface solves every single issue you brought up. Again, it solves EVERY SINGLE ISSUE you brought up.
      This is only complicated because you want it to be complicated. You're bringing up 'problems' that were solved back in the 90's.

    Had this rough idea for awhile, but with a projector as well, so it can project the range of any unit you point to for movement/shooting, to as well as roughly help determine LOS around terrain bases for units not inside it and needing the up close look themselves. Combine with voice activation so a player can point to a unit, say that unit will shoot and point to a target unit and state that units name, get little circles around each and confirm, and get quick auto resolved values if you want.
    This seems like a first step in that direction, definitely not there yet, or quite yet planning to be, but the future versions of it, or someone elses iteration inspired by it might be that.

    This feels aggressively close to the dream sold in 2013 that is Star Citizen. A passionate creator telling us all about all the technology he is going to pioneer in order for us to enjoy a game to its fullest extent. As someone who backs Star Citizen, I appreciate the passion and want to see this succeed. But I must point out that that project is still in an early alpha stage after 11 years, and caution potential backers that buying into this dream, while possibly noble and likely something that will eventually exist, could be something you are waiting a veeeeery long time to actually experience in its entirety.

    I've been thinking about this kind of product for a while, but I know I don't have the skills to build it myself. I personally think the 1st phase should just to be to concentrate on a tracker/helper for competitive play, with other modes and the AI coming after the system is bullet proof. I'd also suggest a deal with a major tournament group for both finance, and to help speed up comp play in tournaments (and get rid of cheating).
    I'd also suggest a webcam option, to allow better cameras to be used, so that static overhead streaming cameras can also be used to feed the system rather than having to double up. This would also allow the program to be used to feed stats/data for live streams.
    I'm probably going to jump into the kickstarter, but if I'm honest, I think this might be too big of a project for such a small team.

    This needed a fully functioning AI opponent to be the selling point before it went to kickstarter. And even then, I agree with Auspex T - GW will never allow this program to use their rule set for a commerical purpose that they don't own or control and are unlikely to embrace an AI replacing a real player/customer.

      I think, what players need the most is an AI opponent which they can training with. One of the many problems with 40k Is that, for some players, Is really difficult to find people near home to play with. So when they go to a tournament they are totally unprepared against armies they never ever played with. That implies you must attend many many tournaments in order to have a grasp of pretty much every army in 40k. Not everyone Is a totally hardcore tournament player, but for those ones Is a problem if they don't have enought local players

    I would love to have the automated battle reports (stop-motion style) for all games. Maybe with the computer labeling the units and guessing what happened (this unit charged that etc).
    During the game, my main gripe is measuring things out constantly (and catching people moving too optimistically). Would be great to have an automatic measuring aid somehow (maybe with some lasers for indication). But seems very difficult to make in a hassle-free way.
    I wouldn't want to automate rolling the dice. I feel like that is one of the things most people enjoy.

Imagine buying a starting 500pt army and then adding to that over time like the actual game but only on PC. I think that would do really well and have a long game life due to being able to own multiple armies in game.

    Literally all I want is a digital version of 40k, like a video game. Think baldurs gate and DnD, simplifed for video game reasons, but I still want to play irl. Its just impossoble to play your friends across the globe except for on tabletop simulator, which is janky as hell. Would make it so much easier to get into, since you can try other armies without spending $1,000 just to try it

  • @LordOffal

    This feels like it’s filled with potential issues. The main thing I can think of is that it this isn’t touted as a 40K program and is a meant to be a framework for other games too (at least eventually). I’m dubious it’ll be flexible enough here for that.
    One camera will always have issues with depth and won’t work for models under terrain say in a building which is quite common as a terrain piece. It’d probably struggle with coming down from a height too.
    Finally it has to keep up with GWs constant rules updates. Every rules errata or tournament rule set needs to be available on this tool.
    I don’t want to be a negative person here as it’s super easy to come up with problems and often they are solvable. The issue is doing it cheaply, reliably, and in a reasonable timeframe. Driverless cars actually are a really similar problem to this. With a stupid amount of money being thrown at that problem it still isn’t commercialised properly even all these years later.
    This ignores the fact that it’s not really needed for most friendly play though could be nice to have as an option at some board game cafes or tournaments to both help someone learn the rules / make sure people keep to them. It does feel like the classic tech over engineer life idea.

    Well, if you look at Magic the Gathering, Dungeons and Dragons, and even Chess... online gaming is certainly going to be the future. The only part that would be hard to port into a tabletop engine would be a way for GW to extract money from it. What can they really offer when you're playing online games, attending virtual tournaments, and painting up 3D printed miniatures.
    And how would GW even check if your models are 'official' GW models or not when you're on the other side of the country or planet.
    That said, I think AR would be a better way to do this than cameras.

The AI opponent seem like a cool way of playing a game when you have no one else to play. One issue is I feel like auto rolling dice is not a great selling point, A lot of people that I know play the game because rolling dice is fun (me included). Without the ability to physically roll your own dice it would remove some of the fun with the game.

  • @benjamincroxson2020

    So basically, you still need all the physical mini's you would usually need, then you need to spend more money on camera stands, camera or additional phone/s purely for footage capture, a subscription to this 'product' (which by the way is 79/yr for the "basic" and 250/yr for the "pro", whatever the f**k that means), all for the ability to say "oh that's cool".
    Tabletop simulator is a one-time 40 buck purchase: why on earth would I waste money for this? other than looking at stats, there is zero upside for casual play. I can see major tournaments getting behind this for stat tracking, etc., but without GW's blessing (i.e. not being shot down in a fiery ball of 'Hey! don't touch our IP!'), this project is dead in the water.....
    I also have a burning hatred for Kickstarter projects that fully fund their ideas through donation - prove your concept first, show me how it's good/better/usable than alternatives and then I'll donate. Your asking people to bet on the consumers whims that this project will take off...

    Finally, a practical use for AI...
    Aside from allowing people in vastly different areas to play together, I could see this being helpful for 'practicing' gameplay, either for newer players trying to get comfortable with the game(s), or those wanting to try different strategies or army lists (even if only against an AI opponent).
    I would think a big challenge would be that both players would need the exact same terrain placed in the exact same places on the table. GW might actually be an ally in this, since they could produce 'official standard' terrain pieces with predefined sizes, shapes, etc.. Mo money.
    I wonder if this could be better developed/tested with Kill Team, Space Hulk, or one of the other smaller games, just to get the kinks out before attacking 40K. This is seriously the first use of AI that interests me, and I hope it's successful... :)

    I'd actually play if I had some sort of easy system to play digitally, but this seems more meant for higher end tournament types. Seems a whole lot of set up and added technical knowledge to ensure all is operating properly, which defeats the purpose of using it for say just your average 500-1k point game between two casual friends.
    I still wish GW would allow some devs to make an actual official tabletop simulator type of game, so I could just buy the software and test rules and generally play online without needing to hike half my models across the city on my only day off. I know the tablesim currently has ability to set it all up, but I dont even know where to begin with it, and an official game for this purpose would make things so much simpler. However I realize GW will probably never do this, as they are afraid it would eat into their physical model sales if people could 'easily' play 40k digitally. The battle sector games being as close as they will let it get, and those are obviously severely lacking.

    I can see this being a really cool way of broadcasting tournaments but I could never see GW going for it because it would be way too progressive and convenient for them, at least until they "come up with the idea themselves" and release their own version. With the right presenting, marketing and publishing it could make for a really cool pseudo-televised third party tournament with watch back features like faceit.
    As for the AI opponent, it would be difficult but no more difficult than setting up any other RTS or turn based AI aside from the need to make it modular enough that you can update army and model rules as needed
