the first time through this game is very much a learning game. i understand Grant's frustration, but if you gave it a second try i'm sure you would have done much better with the axis the second time around. but i totally agree that the scoring is odd. the idea that you could theoretically take out Britain and eat almost all of Russia and the allies STILL dont sue for peace, is a hard pill to swallow. i also wish that there was a 1939 poland campaign start.
Ah! I was hoping you guys had done this one! Just pulled the trigger on it yesterday morning and waiting on delivery. Planning to play solo and it has hooked me. Europe WW2 in perhaps 4-5 hours. I think it could have some good replay value and I like the mechanics actually. I can see the point you made however for the victory conditions if playing multiplayer. I think the allies would have a much easier time. It will be interesting to give it a go I believe. PS I also have the impression you must do the battle of the Atlantic from the get go. As you get three U-boats for one action so you are still grinding ahead. I guess my first outing will be interesting with that plan.
I finally figured out how to enjoy your videos by ten fold..fast forward to the game play segment then watch the opening segment where I now have a better understanding of what the heck you are talking about.
I got the WW1 versioin of this game. Havent had chance to play it. FirstlyI was looking at this game, but the weird scoring for Germany did put me off from getting this game. Also, I have quite a lot WW2 games, especially ETO, so WW1 was nice addition. Nice review, enjoyed
I was considering picking this up, but this review (and a bit of a vibe I already had) convinced me that Triumph & Tragedy, which is in my collection, does everything this game does, but a little better and cleaner. Love grand strategy WW2 games!
@@PMMagro That's fair! But I have a feeling that if I got this, and got 3 players together to play it, I couldn't shake the feeling that if I'd taken a little more time for the game, we could be playing T&T (which is just fantastic, one of my favs).
I really enjoy The Lamps are Going Out so I was hoping this would give that same feel but in WW2; shame but I'll skip this one. Anyone have any other suggestions that might fit?
Hi the game targets a concrete sector of the wargamers. This author has a gem about the same topic. Blitzwar an outstanding game not difficult neither simplistic. Bliztwar deserves a reprint for me the best simulation of 2 ww.
I liked the WW1 game. It is off course way less competition with WW1 games compared to WW2 though. The WW1 game is also lighter (no naval actions etc).
@@ThePlayersAid Sorry, yes it is broad. I'm partial to WW2. Probably a battle. Let's say Europe - Bulge, Stalingrad or Berlin. Or whatever you recommend.
If it's a sandbox game, but you have to do certain things to keep the game competitive, then I have to ask, is it really a sandbox game? Or is it a puzzle game disguised as a sandbox game, where the puzzle is to find out what you have to do in the game to keep it competitive. I feel Grants frustration and disconnect. It seems to me that this is more of a puzzle game, where you have to figure out, as the German player, how the game wants you to play it.
Calling the game anachronistic for not giving the Nazis an auto win for taking Moscow is unfair. Napoleon's Grande Armée took Moscow, but no "auto win" was achieved.

I agree but this is half the playing time of T & T with way less of a learning curve. Looks like a game new players could get into?

@@Weldingization T&T is great. Hard to pass if one have the time and people know the game.
This - based on your review - gave me a turn-based strategy video game vibe.

What would you recommend as the best introductory WW1/WW2 war game?
That’s such a broad question, you want the whole war, just Europe, just a battle in the war, and which one.. because WWI and WWII are very different!

@@cptsound1972 Great place to start would be Worthington's: 1944 Battle of the Bulge. Nice, easy, single session hex and counter bulge game.

As a wargamer of 50 years my verdict is ...bleh.

Whilst that’s true, if Napoleon had taken London and Moscow both I don’t think that would be an unfair ending to a game.
