The Eminence in Shadow (Japanese: 陰の実力者になりたくて!, Hepburn: Kage no Jitsuryokusha ni Naritakute!) is a Japanese light novel series written by Daisuke Aizawa and illustrated by Tōzai. It began serialization online in May 2018 on the user-generated novel publishing website Shōsetsuka ni Narō. It was later acquired by Enterbrain, who have published the series since November 2018.
A manga adaptation with art by Anri Sakano has been serialized in Kadokawa Shoten's seinen manga magazine Comp Ace since December 2018. A spin-off manga by Seta U titled Kage no Jitsuryokusha ni Naritakute! Shadow Gaiden (陰の実力者になりたくて！ しゃどーがいでん, "The Eminence in Shadow! Shadow Side Story") was also serialized via Comp Ace from July 2019 to September 2023. Both the light novel and main manga have been licensed in North America by Yen Press. An anime television series adaptation produced by Nexus aired from October 2022 to February 2023. A second season aired from October to December 2023. When he let out the light beam atomic attack, this is a physical description of what happened:
The concentrated energy he released, with apparently zero filter, was so powerful, it not only disintegrated that cultist dude in to pure energy from his original form...but also excited the base-line subatomic particles which made him up so they'd travel through the 4th dimension and actually ERASE the cultist dude from all existence. Like, ever. Those atoms, no matter what form they once took in that universe, was simply erased. They ceased to be.
The beam then lessened in intensity and raw power, continuing through the solar system (or universe even), and just kept going, merely breaking anything in its path in to mere atoms.
Finally after travelling 200 lightyears in one direction instantaneously (yes I know that's impossible, but here's the thing: fuck you), it eventually lost enough energy to dissipate in to mere light. It was so long, so big, that to the observers of this fantasy planet, it appears as just a star in the sky. He literally created a straight line star. Projections estimate that it will be one of the last known things in the universe to continue having light, until it too dissipates and cools down, becoming basic radiation.
Aliens throughout that side of the universe will build Dyson Spheres around it, if only to absorb a fraction of its uncontrollable power to use as energy. Countless Gogo-Plexes of beings will benefit from that light...
And to think...he did it once...on a whim...because he was bored. To a significant portion of the universe, it's the singular most important thing they've ever known.....
....but to Shadow....it was Tuesday....
