oh John Manalo is filipino and in the Philippines our washing machine works when its open coz you throw soap in there unlike washing machine in North America theres that box thing where you put soap or clorox or someshit idk you know what im tlkin bout

Or...a magnet. It’s a metal switch inside the machine and a magnet in the lid. So when you close it, it knows to go on. And open it knows to shut off. If you take a 5lbs or more magnet and put it on the switch on the side, you can use the machine while the lids open. I work on machines, do it all the time.
