we were stationed here in 1988 -1989 best 18 months assignment my name was Jenny Ivone back then. My daughter loved it as most of the kids did. It was a wonderful place for them to have friends . We had kids all around us they played outside all the time . The parents spent many days and weekends together. It was the best. Anyone remember Paulo's just outside the base. I loved the friends, the Sicilian people were amazing and friendly, food was the best. Never eat Italian out after living in Sicily. The markets Just the BEST ever

My father served at Comiso AS for one year '86-87. We were not able to join him on his remote tour. I remember the tan he had when he got back. He looked like George Hamilton. I can only imagine the weather he had there for that year. I remember he brought picture home of Mt. Etna erupting and sheep herds that clogged the streets. Thanks for posting this. Its the tour I never got to have and now that he is gone, its a great way to remember him. Thank you!

I was stationed there 86-87. Still a remote tour when I arrived. Mission essential only housed on base. I lived in a gorgeous home in Punta Secca, 2-minute walk from the beach and Kaukanna Inn, just down from the light house. My roommate was Bob Whitney. Was there when Reagan sent the missles through Qaddafi's bedroom window. They sent local nationals out and told us to remain in place. Forced to drink rum on the beach for a week. Taromina nearly every weekend during summer (Swedish Girls!!); Ragusa disco's during winter (Sicilian Girls!!!). It was like Spring Break on MTV for a year. Thanks for posting this. Brings back a lot of great memories!

I was stationed @ Comiso & like everyone else I loved the base, the country, the people, the food, everything. I was assigned to the 487 TMW/Transportation Squadron. I was there when Maj. Branchini called me @ 02:45 to tell me to get my real world MOP gear ready & turn on AFN as we had just bombed Bagdad. I have so many fond memories of this, I can't believe I stumbled upon this. I am so glad I did.......I can recall our exercises @ Niscemi, & the Great People I served with. Most called me "Rudy"

My dad was stationed here in 1990-1992. I remember so many of these places you photographed. I cannot thank you enough. I went to Comiso Cavaliers elementary school. I remember the food, smells, bustle of life everywhere. I have had a heavy heart for 2 days after seeing this beautiful memory abndoned. I remember the hangars off in the distance. Hummers and soldiers walking around. They took us for rides so we wouldn't be afraid of them. Wow. Profound. Thank you so much.

This brings back some great memories. I was TDY there from Jan-Mar 86 and then was stationed there from Dec 86-Mar 88. I was the Asst Club manager. We didn't have much of a club, just a bar and snack bar, but man did we have fun! Lived in the dorms for a while, then a port a cabin the last year or so. The food around there was terrific and the people were awesome. The disco on the beach was a blast as well.

Many thanks for posting the video. Sure brought back memories. I was stationed there from 1986 - 1987. I was the Chief Engineer of the radio stations and put up the first microwave tower to bring television to the air station. Was followed by Tim Ryan who built the formal television station.
We were in the portables during my year. Base housing opened up while I was there.
I lived in Comiso and remember the bus rides to and from - no uniforms allowed! Man, the bus drivers loved Whitney Houston. That's all we heard that year!!
Loved my time there and it's sad to see the base now.

I was at Comiso from the start ('83-'84) I recall the mud and the joy of getting concrete side walks. We were billeted down town with the locals and they found us quite odd. I remember Christmas and the base hosting some orphans. I bought a doll for a little girl and she was so happy. I also recall some tragedies, . overall , it was a memorable tour. Thanks for posting.

I WAS HERE FROM JAN 1988 TO OCT 1988. I REALLY LIKED GETTING OFF BASE AND EXPLORING EVERYTHING I HAD TIME TO SEE. LEARNED ITALIAN SO I COULD CONVERSE WITH THE LOCALS. BEAUTIFUL CHURCHES AND THE HISTORY OF WWII AND THE GREEK RUINS IN AGRIGENTO. WOW. WHAT A FUN TIME WHEN I WAS NOT ENSLAVED BY MY POLICE DUTIES. I HAD WORKED THE FRONT GATE AND DID PATROLS AROUND BASE AT NITE NOTHING EVER HAPPENED ON MY WATCH.

Amazing video! I was stationed there around September '90 to May '91. 2189th Comm Sq. I spent Desert Storm there. The base closed down by the end of '91. While I was there, the nice restaurant with the sunroof had just closed down and we had to eat at the burger joint. I liked the racquetball and bowling alley pics since I learned both while stationed there. I lived in the dorms so I have no recollection of the family housing. I can't believe it's been 27 years since I left. I had many good memories, even with some of the locals whom I worked along side with. Thanks for this great video!

I was part of the original team that built Comiso in 1983, serving as the communications programs manager until the arrival of the permanent party NCO. None of what is shown in this video existed at that tie - they were just drawings. We had temporary structures on the old world war two runway. There was a peace camp outside the gate protesting the base and there was always a risk of getting tear gassed at the gate.

I can't thank you enough for doing this blog and video about Comiso Katie. I was actually in a Navy unit that was from the Sigonella base. Sigonella overflowed with reserves so half of our unit was put on Comiso in September to December of 1990. We actually were the last people to leave Comiso when it closed down. I'm with the NR NAS Sigonella 0573 unit that was called up for Desert Storm. The Navy people that stayed on Comiso thought we were in heaven on this base. A real apartment or town home to live in... now that was special for us. We all loved the base so much. The air force took us in and treated us like family. Made so many good friends there. But seeing your video just was so sad, the base used to be so lively and to see it all abandoned is so heartbreaking but have great memories there. Thank you so much for doing this for us all.

Where is your reserve unit stationed at? I used to be in the Sigonella unit at Selfridge ANGB in Michigan. Some of the guys I served with there deployed to Sig for Desert Storm and stayed at Comiso. I was thinking that you might have been someone I knew. I was there from '99 to '02, ABH2 Makrianis.

That is exactly where we are from. NR NAS Sigonella 0573 from NAF Detroit. We have a facebook page under NrNas Sigonella. We were all called up for Desert Storm and stationed at Comiso when we first got there then that base shut down and we then went out into the world of housing around the Sigonella base. I for one stayed at Comiso, best place ever at the time. Join our facebook page and touch base again!

NR NAS Sigonella I just joined the FB page, I'm glad that I found it. I got off active duty in '99 and then joined the unit that same year so it was just a few years after Desert Storm. I remember guys who deployed talking about it though. Do you know SK1 Hudson? Are you still with the unit? If not when did you leave? I left in '02 and joined the Air Nat'l Guard, I retired last October.

What an awesome video, I was stationed there between 87-88 short tour assignment. I was a videoographer photo specialist. I still have some photos of the place when it was active. Remember the visits we got from "Russian inspectors" yeah right Russian inspectors my butt. Oh well I use to buy Capt crunch cereal at the commissary and trade it for fresh tortellini. there was a shop in Comiso that sold walnuts from Stockton California I laughed they were expensive. Comiso Air Station was an awesome assignment and a beautiful place to play. Sometimes on Fridays we would go to the beaches and call it a training day for photography. Hey us photographers had to train too. To bad we did not have to dawn on our chem suit to take photos of you guys. I also worked at the theaters part time. I remember when "Serpant of the Rainbow" came to town, we packed that theater.

Arrived in the winter of '83. There were no sidewalks. As we walked in the mud, it stuck to our shoes like glue and by the time you reached your destination, you were a couple of inches taller. The Comm Squadron had a flat monument installed in front of their office commemorating them as the first comm unit there. I lived in downtown Comiso in a building with several other officers. One morning as we were waiting for the bus to take us to the base, a semi truck pulled up in front of us and the driver jumped out and started running away from the truck and us. We stood in shock as we anticipated an explosion that would have taken us all out. Fortunately, it was a legitimate load on the truck and we all let off a collective sigh as we realized we were safe. We had some great times there for sure. My favorite thing to do was to take the bus to Sigonella Naval Base on the weekend and get some corn dogs at the base snack bar. I and a buddy would go almost every weekend. Haven't found a corn dog yet that measures up to them. Great times indeed.

Bob Allain: I was stationed there when the base was 6 months old. One year tour 1983-84. When I got there the base was a construction site and we were staying in a hotel on the Med. After a month and a half they built the first barracks building. At the 6 month point in my tour they built a recreation center with pool tables, a racketball court, and small weight room and basketball court. Not much else in the video was there. I worked in the transportation building, packing and crating section, built the work benches and set up the shop from scratch with one staff Sgt. Amazing that the base is abandoned after 30 years.

I was stationed in Sigonella when COMISO was built. I worked at the air terminal and had to deliver gear there on a regular basis. We were all so jealous because they had new housing, a great pool and food we did not get. All the Sig people would do "COMISO" runs to pick up stuff from the commisary. I was also stationed in Sig when they closed the base down. They were turning housing over to the local nationals. It is great to see the pictures but sad to see what has become of it.

I concur on the video, pics and sound track are so good. I was there in the last year, 90-91. We all thought the base was being demilitarized for a return to the Italian Air Force to use for theirs and civilian purposes, but I can tell you right now those pics are like the days we closed many of those buildings. Sad, so sad. We were there when Iraq invaded Kuwait and the days we spent on alert during Operations Desert Shield/Storm.

The 1990 World Cup was happening and we ran into some teams in the Rome airport as we were heading out to play in the USAFE soccer tournament at Incirlik AB, Turkey. What a great island. Molto grazie, dominicteretto! How very poignant! I'm SWBaileyYT's mother, who was there with him. I echo his sentiments. So very sad that it was left to just fall down. So much life was there! I will send you pictures of happier days. :D Ciao!

We stopped in there while deployed to Sigonella in 2002 with the USAF. There were still Italian security guards at the main entrance who told us the base is being left as is with the hope that some day the American military will return ..

Awesome video Daniell. Your photography and soundtrack are superb. It gave me chills. And, as someone else said before, really sad. I want to put together similar videos of some of the abandoned bases and installations in Japan and yours gave me inspiration. Incidentally, I'm afraid this is what MCAS Futenma will look like in a few years if the Japanese and Okinawans have their way. I would've thought the Sicilian and Italian governments could've done something with Comiso. What a waste.

So It brings back a sense of Home.. sad to see it in such dis-repair.. but I would love to buy it.. who do I talk to about selling it...

I was stationed at Comiso in 6/84 to 6/85. The base only had two dorms, plenty of porta cabins, headquarters, dining hall and multi-purpose bldg for Airman and Officers shared same club with Italian Air force. Those were the days, I actually had a good time in Sicily. I played for base basketball team and travelled throughout the Med. None of these bldgs. were built and we walk in mud and construction and dark nights most of our year. #GoodoleComiso.

Remembering the days when the base would run out of food. We had to eat rabbit some days, taste like chicken, lol. We received American news always a day late by VHS from President Reagan and Stars and stripes news, Good ole days.

Annie Falzarano Same here. Was there in the late 80's as a kid. 88-90 I believe. I'm pretty positive we lived right across the street from the tennis court shown in the video. I remember my mom had a friend named Rosa close by, too. Definitely brought back memories like me wanting to learn to swim so I could jump off the platform at the pool.

wow now that brings back memories. My family was stationed there for about 2 years back when I was little. I think I went to preschool and kindergarden during that time. My parents are Tom/Barb Wilson if any of you want to get in touch with them let me know and I will pass your information along to them. I was the youngest that road my little bike every place lol. Its so sad seeing this place so over grown. I loved living here.

@fcmullins Yeah, it was the same way with Tachikawa Air Base, Johnson AB, Camp Drake, Fuchu Air Station and plenty others in Japan that were established after World War II. Each was like a slice of home...Small Town America in a foreign land. Then, in the '70s with the end of 'Nam, we just walked away. I've gone back since to visit and they're in a lot worse shape than Comiso. Virtual ghost towns. So sad to see.

BY THE WAY HOW DID YOU GET IN? IS JUST OPEN TOTALLY NOBODY THERE OR WHAT? THERE IS A TUNNEL SYSTEM UNDER THE ROAD BETWEEN THE ITALIAN SIDE AND AMERICAN SIDE OF THE BASE IF I REMEMBER IT CORRECTLY.

Judging by some of the posts I'm reading here it sounds like the base was still pretty new when it closed. The buildings look like they are in good shape, I'm surprised that they just let them sit their unused and haven't found other uses for them. The dorms could be used as regular apartments.

Hi, I probably ran into your father, maybe, maybe not. I was in the 487th SPS, Delta Flight. The GAMA Tower and Central Security Control were my homes for the year I was there. I was in the tower the day Etna erupted and I remember the sheep and the truckers strike and Maj. Mason. God only knows how much I miss the people and the country. Best year of my life.

Actually happy that the USA still owns the houses and what not because if the Italian government did they'd have thousands more migrants there like they do at another base that's out of commission near here
