You know you're in for a ride when the kaiju has a body count from the very start. Also love that they have to do crazy acrobatics to transform even if they're just standing next to each other. And I _especially_ love how all Ultra Brothers had to do finisher poses upon landing XD
I like how the Ace series emphasized that the Yapool are these terrifying manipulative monsters, only for all subsequent series to then turn them into generic villains of the week. I think only Z emphasized just how terrifying Yapool and their minions are when just the threat of Baraba's return makes regular kaiju shit themselves. It's a pity that later directors just recycled Verokron, Vakishim and Doragary.
@@LordMortaniusI agree. My favourite Choju from Ace is Baraba and this episode along with the next reinforce this fact. Of course the fact that it reappeared in Episode 19 of Z after being merely appearing as a recurring body part of Tyrant over the years helps to make Baraba a more credible threat thanks to the numerous boosts Yapool's grudge gave it while it was wandering in the alternate dimension.
Same! They are simple movements, but I find myself watching how all the Brothers move and gesture. Every bit that can give me a sense of their personalities! I like the small salute Ace gave excitedly when he was first reunited with his Brothers, then after that when he glanced back having to leave them behind 😭
Space has a temperature of -270 Celsius. The trap is a little colder than that, so I guess that's the point where it gets tricky for Ultras. Plus flying probably generates heat in the body.
Planet Golgotha! Baraba (Varaba?)! THE SLAP! And the birth of Evangelion! This is one of my favourite episodes so I'm going to be even more long-winded than usual! 🙇♀️ Among many themes, this episode is about brothers who protect each other. The Ultra Brothers truly felt like family here. This is seen in the parallel story of human brothers. The little boy, Shoji, tries to help his older brother deliver newspapers to earn money, and dutifully annoys him. Ace is a little brother too, so of course, I immediately associate him with Shoji. The cheeky grin is cute 😊 When Baraba attacks, Shoji's older brother sacrifices himself to save him. This parallels Ace's brothers sacrificing their energy to send Ace back to Earth. When Ace resists, Man gives him the legendary slap. To me, Ace's resistance is one of the earliest signs of his personality. He might be a ruthless warrior in battle, but he wasn't just a soldier. And when Ace glances back as he leaves his brothers behind, it's heartbreaking 😭 Watching as a child, I had an image of the Ultra Brothers as "family", but they were still adults. Watching now as an adult myself, I feel how *young* Ace is here. Unlike his veteran brothers, Ace could not put duty first. The camera and music that lingers on Ace as he realises the truth of Man's words is wonderful. There was also excitement about Ace's first person pronoun, so I'm documenting here: Ace uses "boku" (僕) with his brothers. I'm not an expert, but I think it sounds super cute and reflects his youngest brother status🥰 Man uses "watashi" (私), and the rest use "ore" (俺) Speaking of youth, I just finished watching Man's final episode and something was familiar: "Ace, you're too young to die." & "Hayata is still young, I cannot sacrifice him"... Man-niisan doesn't interact much with his juniors, but he truly cares for the young 🥺 I also love the distinction that Zoffy puts his hands on Ace's shoulder to encourage him, even after Ace agreed to return to Earth 🥺 (Many fans think it was Zoffy who slapped Ace, but it wasn't him! 😂 Zoffy has a much softer side for his cute younger brother Ace 😚) To add to the horror, Planet Golgotha looks like a skull! It's located in the Anti-Universe. Unlike Zero who needed immense power, Ace and his Brothers casually fly faster than the speed of light to enter it😂 I like the special effects for inter-universe travel, and the dramatic glow of Ace's eyes as he emerges. A happy music plays when the Brothers appear, and Ace gives them a small salute! It gives me the feeling that Ace was happy and excited to be reunited with his brothers😊 Since the Ultra Sign is so easily faked or destroyed (by Tyrant in Taro's series), I think the Space Garrison should explore more secure modes of official communication 😅
It strikes me here how much the Yapool are Ace's iconic villains. Sure, they trapped all the Brothers, but it takes a special kind of hatred to make it so personal. "Kill Baraba, and you kill your brothers too." The post-Ace appearances of the Yapool are kind of lukewarm. They're generic one-episode villains (and not even 'them' anymore, just the significantly less terrifying Giant Yapool). It's not till Z that the Yapool are rehabilitated as villains, their overwhelming hatred of Ace is emphasized, and we even get a nice callback to their dying curse from Ace 23 ("Yapool may die..."). My headcanon is that the Yapool, or one of their agents, may have been the killers of Ace's family, and that they created Tyrant (another poor kaiju that's been reduced to a generic one-shot villain) as a sort of proto U-Killersaurus.
@@LordMortanius That's a really good point on the focus of Yapool's hatred on Ace personally! The Golgotha episodes are peak malevolence as they gleefully torture Ace psychologically with his Brothers' deaths (living up to their utmost villainy by not even killing the Brothers when they had the chance). Yapool's appearance in Mebius is really good, but it focuses more on Yapool's ability to tap into and manipulate human weakness against the Ultra. It's only in Z that we see such an obsession with Ace, as Yapool seems to be reduced to a literal mass of seething hatred focused on Ace himself (to the point of mistaken Windom for Ace). There are also some very good stage shows that build on this obsession from Yapool towards Ace. Ironically, it's almost as Ace is the reason for Yapool existing. I really like both your ideas! Yapool being responsible for Ace's parents death gives their relationship a more personal dimension (and challenes Ace not to give into feelings of revenge, another dark emotion). Tyrant being a prototype also makes a lot of sense! Isn't it made up of mostly chouju parts? I really like that! (Tyrant also seemed to especially take glee in bashing Ace on Mars, but maybe that's just me...)
@@zombiejade898 If the other chojuu make a return, I hope that they'll get upgrades too. Baraba was a step in the right direction with the Yapool learning from their past defeats; it tanks and breaks the Ace Blade, stalemates the Metallium Ray, shatters the Neo Barrier and simply absorbs the Punch Laser. Hopefully Velokron remembers it has fire breath and three different energy attacks the next time it appears, though some of the lesser-known choju (Chameleking, Brocken, or even poor Aprasar) making a return would be nice.
@@zombiejade898 With regard to Ace's family, Ultraseven seems to be the closest to Ace. While he does step in to personally save Jack twice, his interactions with Ace have a close family kind of feel. I know that Seven is Ace's cousin, but I like the idea that Seven was Ace's trainer and confidante too. Ace seems to have been the family favourite, amusingly enough. Pops comes all the way down just to celebrate Christmas and brings along his son's long-distance girlfriend too. There's also the subtle implication that Ace has never actually met the Yapool personally, which fits the Yapool MO perfectly; in Ace, they act through mercenaries, minions and their chojuu. Episode 23 seems to be the one time that Ace actually confronts them head-on; I guess maybe he's met Giant Yapool before and not the actual Yapool people.
Guess someone forgot to adjust the subs' code so the italic made things italic :P Man, the cops were fast on ignoring the boy's story about how his brother died. They seem to not even bothered checking the phone booth was destroyed by something other than a collapse. And monsters' appearance are meant to be be common on this universe! And once again the ultras have those weird greetings. Like... We didn't even have a shot on their faces as they let their grunts out. Sounds like a filming mistake they couldn't fix duo time crunches? Also, 'Man-bro's voice here reminded me of Ide for some reason
Let's talk about Baraba's rain! I thought it was a filming mistake that only Baraba is shown in rain, but Yapool explains the reason. It's still funny to see the humans in perfectly clear skies. I have this image of a giant storm cloud following Baraba wherever it goes 😂⛈️ Somehow, Ace sensed a chouju attacked Earth while he was in the Anti-Universe. It's like when his medal detected chouju in episode Z19, even though Zett's Earth is in a different dimension. Does Ace have a natural Yapool detector? 😱 Maybe you're a little obsessed... "I'm avenging my brother." This is Hokuto talking with Shoji, but maybe it's also Ace talking with Shoji. And maybe it's also Hokuto talking with Ace, who is represented by Shoji. I feel it's a conversation that's happening on many levels 🥺 Ace swoops in to save Mikawa's plane, and we later see a close-up of her anger at Yapool 🥺 TAC doesn't have a great reputation among attack teams, but I like any positive interaction between TAC and Ace. (He might be a hard ass, but Yamanaka looks like he's about to cry!) Ace Killer and 2nd Baraba battles are popular, but I love the tension of this battle too. The atmosphere of the rain and lightning, and the glow of Ace and Baraba's eyes in the dark, are wonderful visuals ❤️ The fight choreography of grappling, dodging and weapons is intense! Ace is good at dodging and taking random things as weapons! Despite being blinded by Baraba's attack, he dodges and grabs Baraba's horn as a weapon. It's foreshadowing... 👀 This proves that you should never use projectiles on Ace, as he'll take it and use it back on you 😂 Ace fights Baraba equally, so it's Yapool's manipulation that stops him. Yapool uses emotions as a weapon, and tortures Ace with images of his crucified Brothers 😭 The softening in Ace's strong stance to one of doubt, as Yapool taunts and threatens him, is wonderful suit acting. (Baraba aiming for the colour timer is reminiscent of Zett, isn't it? But this time, unlike back then, Ace made sure Zett didn't fight alone... 🥺) Next episode is the infamous Ace Killer!
I think this is the episode that cemented the Yapool (as in the Yapool race, not Yapool the Generic Alien Overlord) in the Ultra villain lineup. Goh had his girlfriend murdered but was saved by his brothers, Ace has the guilt of 'abandoning' his family to their crucifixion and the Yapool are throwing it in his face in front of the entire Earth. Hell, it's so bad it drives Ace to suicide. He goes to Golgotha with the specific intention of *dying* with his kin. No other villain has done this; I wouldn't be surprised if Ace after his series was put in therapy. I guess this is why Yapool was softened up. OG Yapool would have probably murdered one of GUYS' families and had their corpses possessed by alien mercenaries if they'd kept their Ace characterization. I also kind of miss the lightning teleport thing. It looks like reality is being cut open for the chojuu to arrive, and makes it creepier than the portal thing. Hell, the portal thing appears in only two episodes; the standard chojuu transport is via lightning bolt.
@@LordMortanius I was so shocked upon rewatching these episodes when I realised Ace returned to Golgotha intending to DIE with his Brothers! Usually the hero would return declaring he would SAVE them, but it felt like Ace was so devastated mentally that he was ready to sacrifice himself together with his Brothers 😭 I can only imagine the despair of his Brothers who pulled together their last energy to send him safely back to Earth earlier... Considering how much Yapool tormented Hokuto and Ace throughout the series, I can totally imagine Ace returning to M78 far more damaged mentally. Yapool forever has the advantage of using human hearts and emotions as his weapon, and Ace is constantly fighting to save those hearts, many of which were themselves weakened by humanity's own flawed nature. This ruthlessness is when Yapool is most memorable, I agree! Some other series like Ginga S tried to recreate it at a surface level. There is nothing more annoying than in a show about giant monsters that attack Tokyo literally every week, people don't believe you when you see them, specially when they know this little buggerd have been on the news for months now.
This trope only works at the start of the first attacks, but becimes tiresome when they are public knowledge.
