Originally covered/published Aug 13, 2022; for this version I enhanced the TAB for a full screen view, added the song video and some minor video cosmetic enhancements.
Released November 1983[
Formed by Donnie Van Zant and Don Barnes in 1974 in Jacksonville, Florida.
Donnie Van Zant is the younger brother of Lynyrd Skynyrd founder Ronnie Van Zant, In October 1977 Ronnie Van Zant was killed when Skynyrd's plane crashed.
They are best known for their early 1980s hit singles (yes, you know them)
"Hold On Loosely" “Caught Up in You”, "Rockin' into the Night", “Back Where You Belong", "Second Chance".
The band's name was thought up after an incident which found the boys practicing in a warehouse out in the middle of nowhere.
When police arrived after being notified by locals of the noise, the band members were unable to come out because of a padlock on the door. One of the cops said, "That's all right. We'll let this .38 special do the talking", and shot off the lock.
Julianne Phillips, first wife of Bruce Springsteen, was the model in the “If I’d Be the One” .38 Special music video.
Tour de Force is the sixth studio album by the southern rock band 38 Special, released in 1983.

I was listening to this one ysdy, clued my son in on those talented Van Zant brothers too. I've seen 38 Special, at a very small venue, in Albany, Oregon, they played on this old rickety stage, literally on a pond lol.. Good times! 🎸

@@FRANKSBASSCOVERS I had a lot of fun learning this one. I hadn't heard that song in years. 38 Special is one of those classic rock bands that seems to fly under the radar but has some really good songwriting.
(Well you aint picking it right. Your only using one finger sometimes) LOL. Dont you just love bass snobbery?
But honestly bad ass cover. Sounds really good. And I dont pay attention to my fingers whin I'm picking either. More important to focus on your fret fingers. But i use a pick a lot. Then the bass snobs really come out.

@@FRANKSBASSCOVERS Dude you ain't mediocre for sure. Pick is not hard on bass. When you finger pick you are trying to roll your fingers on the strings. Right? Too much pressure you are gonna get fret buzz. If the attack is too strong you will pull the strings out. Plus you are pulling up and your finger curls. It gives Geezer Butler a pretty cool sound picking at the neck. With a pick and on bass a whole different animal than on guitar. You get a totally different sound. You can alternate pick but on bass it sounds a lot better using down strokes. But on triplets you really need the speed of alternate picking with down and upstrokes. If that makes sense?
But using a pick on bass opens a whole shitload of sounds. Palm muting at the bridge. Pick scraping if you keep it on the higher strings in unison with your guitarist.
But I would suggest learning to play with a pick. I started playing bass after playing guitar. So palm muting and alternate picking and how to hold a pick is just natural to me. Where you palm mute makes a difference in sound too. Over the bridge or in front of the bridge. Watch Gene Simmons live play God of Thunder. Left hand totally off the neck muting that E string at the bridge. Or in KISS world Eflat. Because if I am not mistaken most KISS songs are tuned down a half step. But I ain't mistaken.
That opens a different door. Now your fretting hand sometimes has to mute the E and A strings instead of your picking fingers muting the lower strings. You may have to choke the neck using your thumb.
So don't limit yourself. Learn. You can not play Motorhead with fingers. Even Motley Crue sounds like shit with fingers. You can play it using your fingers but it don't have the same sound.
So go buy some picks and just play. Bass is a different beast than guitar. What angle you hold the pick on bass makes totally different sounds. On Ps and PJs with rock, metal or hair metal the sweet spot is behind the split coil on P basses or PJs with a pick. Motorhead is different
Lemmy played close to the neck with a lot of distortion and almost like a guitar and a lot of power chords.
So learn and practice because it will expand you abilities. But remember on bass it sounds better with down picking unless you need a triplet or 16th notes.

Absolutely makes sense. Great insight and analysis. One key point you made is that you started on guitar so picking is natural. Not that that's the only pathway but it definitely is an advantage and their are countless times I read bassists were asked to switch from guitar to bass to join the band or complete the lineup.
I covered (mostly tried) a fair amount of first call legend Joe Osborn (Wrecking Crew) and he is a perfect example of a bassist using a pic; I can hear the difference, the "scratchiness' where the note sustains but doesn't bleed over. Check out the last few minutes of "Aquarius" by the 5th Dimension as an example and you easily hear it..
