A human being should be able to change a diaper, plan an invasion, butcher a hog, conn a ship, design a building, write a sonnet, balance accounts, build a wall, set a bone, comfort the dying, take orders, give orders, cooperate, act alone, solve equations, analyze a new problem, pitch manure, program a computer, cook a tasty meal, fight efficiently, die gallantly. Specialization is for insects.

This is pretty depressing. I've done so many things throughout my 51 years that I "loved" and really strived to throw my whole heart and mind and soul into it. Sometimes to a point of obsession; Until a few years go by and I realize I'll never attain an acceptable standard for that specialized area I chose to focus on. Then the energy and momentum behind the pursuit wanes. So, feeling like a fraud and a phony to keep up the pretense that I'm good at something that I'm really not very good at eventually overwhelms me to the point where I feel I am on the wrong path and the job/career/ education/hobby must, of a necessity, be abandoned in order to find whatever it is that might be my real purpose or calling or area of "giftedness". I often feel I don't have enough time in my life to pursue all of the things that capture my interest. And I AM at an age where my values and quality of life, for myself and in the lives of others weighs more heavily on my mind. Are you saying a person my age has wasted their life by not deciding on or knowing what to "specialize" in?

      Darn good query
Well life didn't move this fast 30-40 years ago
We were expected to live out a timeline of
      birth school work death
Your one specialization doesn't seem rewarding to you, maybe the money is ..
      I get it
      Life isn't a straight line
      But is it 'not pretty'?
      Whatever is the right way?
Of course, if you specialize and like it so it feels like a game rather than a chore, AND make good dime, that might allow for time to do other things you like doing.

I understand how you feel, even though I'm only 34 years old. I also have tried my hand at a few things, only to find out that I would never get as good as I would like to be.
That being said, I don't feel like I've wasted my time and neither should you. Jordan started talking about specialization in the context of psychology and then applied it to life in general. I think he was trying to say that it's better to focus and create a structure than live in chaos. The fact that you feel like you haven't found your "calling" yet is a whole other issue. We compare ourselves to people who seem like they're doing exactly what they were born to do, but I think that, for most people, the journey to the discovery of the meaning of life is just as important as the calling itself.

... @Dawne, I was sceptical about the title and have been sceptical throughout the rest of the video - but I think that I got what Jordan meant, nonetheless.
In these modern times, specializing means that you're the most useful version of yourself for society. That hasn't been true in the past (our ancestors - every single one of them - had to be generalists of some sorts in order to survive), but it is definitely true today.
Our value for society is just one side of the medal, though. On the flipside we're individuals and wanna express ourselves. Again, we're have more opportunities than any other generation in human history.
I'd say that Jordan - although he is an extremely smart, competent and caring man - didn't balance these two sides out very well in this lecture / argument.
Finding your truth, your lane, means to synchronize your individual interests and preferences with your society's needs. In that way you can live the most fulfilling (cause meaningful) life for yourself while helping your community (which is generally an important part of feeling useful / fulfilled).
If this video hits a nerve of yours, I'd say you haven't found or at least not established your balance - you're not in synch with the world.
I hope these words are at least in some way useful to you - which would make me feel good about myself. 🙂
PS: I'm not a native English speaker, so if I slaughtered the language at some point, please forgive me. 😅

Why did you leave those fields? Everyone feels like a fraud, everyone feels inadequate and not good enough and wants to change and start over. Those who don't, those who keep pushing, are those who become great.
You were in a rush for greatness, but greatness takes a lifetime. Oh, after five years you weren't good enough? Of course! It takes thirty years to become good, let alone good enough! Good news is, you're 50, you have at least 20 more years for greatness, or to combine everything you've tried into something new.
There is no "true calling", nothing will make you happy and complete all the time. Even people who have found something they're passionate about have to hustle, and grit, and there are days and weeks when they don't feel like it and think about quitting. Every one of them.
Choose something you're interested in, choose a field where you think you could provide help to others. Plan, long term, longest term possible. Have a goal in mind, and unreachable one, one that helps humanity as a whole. Have a schedule, and benchmarks for improvement. And go execute. No excuses. No quitting. No one knows, everyone's just winging it, it's your responsibility for your own life and greatness.

I used to look for some perfect passion to dedicate my life to, but I always lost interest in everything.
So for a career I chose something a had interest in but that I could do regardless of mood and varying motivation. I chose horticulture.
If you're looking for something perfect, you might not find it ever and if you choose something and then you hate it most of the time, you are allowed to change path, especially if you gave it a proper effort before you decided it was not for you.
That doesn't mean you shouldn't give your dreams a chance, but you might discover that some of them are not as amazing as you thought it would be

In my youth I trained to Specialize in Urban Combat, Front line warfare. Now midlife I'm attempting to change my Specialization to something else. It is chaotic as hell, bouncing from possibility to possibility, I did learn a little about many things, and I don't truly know anything about any of those things. Currently, I'm a big fan of theology and handyman work, but I still have years to perfect it, he's right I'm getting old being 32 already.

first off, you're still early life. Especially considering retirement ages are now pushing into 60s and 70s. Dont beat yourself up - maybe pursue a trade or something along those lines and have a creative outlet and you'll find things far more fulfilling than you could imagine.
