I've been railfanning on the CN Champaign Sub since I came to U of I with about 15-20 trains a day, but I'll be honest, the train traffic decline on the CN ex-IC is nothing compared where I originally came from - the Union Pacific ex-SP Coast Subdivision in California. Like I'm saying now if you go there the UP Coast Sub only gets 2-4 locals a day and Amtrak Coast Starlights/boring local commuter traffic (Caltrain/Metrolink) each direction, when it used to be a blooming rail line back in the SP, with at least 2 intermodals/day, around 4 manifests/day from Portland or Los Angeles, a sugar beet train each way, oil cans, autoracks, grain, you name it. All that traffic is either gone or rerouted to the UP Valley Subdivision. Like you'll stand there waiting for 10 hours and just see an Amtrak and that's it. And I'm not even talking about the massive freight yards in San Jose and San Francisco and Oakland that were torn down by UP and all the countless industries that moved out due to Silicon Valley and the tech boom... like chances are if you see a rail track there it's either rusted or paved already :(

oh and also make sure to catch blue devil ic 2466 when you can, sometimes it comes north and south on grain shuttles lately. its not coming back after this. (I think this is the last blue devil ever)

Actually I was able to catch it at Centralia on a grain shuttle already. But you are right this is the last active blue devil. And it already went north on a U759 which goes to Alberta. I don't think it is coming back

Centralia is not a dying railroad town. Trains come and go daily, and sometimes even hourly. There’s plenty of variety with railfanning, including NS, CN, and BNSF. Im a resident of centralia and i know for a fact that this town is not dead.

    **UPDATES** for Centralia
Amtrak trains 391 and 392 have been abolished and 59 and 58 the City of New Orleans no longer run on the weekend
BNSF Beardstown sub has recieved a new contract for the line which is more coal trains but now for "Ohio Valley"
CN also has been getting a little more busy as crude oil trains and ore trains are starting to appear more
I was wrong on the amount of trains the BNSF Beardstown sub gets. Instead of 3-6 they actually get around 8 a day. 5 daily coal trains, two baldwins to the CN and the industrial park. With the BNSF Centralia-Paducah locals running as well, it can go up to 9 a day
Norfolk Southern coal trains 430 and 431 have been running a little more often too

I wish I could go back to late 70s to see some of the rail traffic in Illinois before it was stopped and track taken up
