New Riverview Public Library Debuts 2021

A state-of-the-art library is opening to serve residents in Riverview and surrounding communities.
The Riverview Public Library, 9951 Balm Riverview Road, has 35,000 square feet of amenities for learning, collaborating, and relaxing. Services and features include books, magazines, DVDs, a screened-in reading porch, an outdoor garden, after-hours book drops, a vending café, and a bookstore.
Along with free internet and Wi-Fi access throughout the building, there are eight meeting rooms, a recording studio, a 5,000-square-foot children’s room, and an early-learning HIVE for the youngest library patrons.
The new library is four times the size of its predecessor, which was about two miles away on Riverview Drive. That building opened in 1979, replacing a “bookmobile” stationed in a local grocery store parking lot.The building’s “old Florida grandeur” architecture and design features ensure the campus will be a community asset and source of pride for years to come. Its light and airy interior is highlighted by a terrazzo floor mural, The River of Fire, that flows from the library’s main entranceway, through the lobby hall, and into the Main Reading Room. Stained glass windows depict native flora and fauna. In the outdoor garden there are benches fashioned of granite “books” bearing well-known titles.Sustainable elements are incorporated throughout, such as solar panels on the building’s roof, native landscaping, and patio furniture made from recycled plastic bottles.
Friends of the Riverview Public Library worked for years to replace the former building. Members toured other libraries in the Tampa Bay area to see what would, and wouldn’t, work at a new facility. They’re thrilled with the result, says Gretchen Del Savio, the volunteer group’s president.
“This is a culmination of a lot of people’s hopes,” Del Savio says. “The library is more than just a place to go and read. It’s a place to be with people and learn things. We want this new library to kind of center everybody.”
The new branch has offered contactless curbside pickup of library materials since January. The library building opens at 25 percent capacity on April 5.
The Riverview Branch Library is among 29 Hillsborough County Public Library locations throughout the county.
