Greatsword versus Shield

  • As part of the block of Greatsword training I'm currently teaching at Ludolph van Ceulen, I'd like to keep track of the various challenges a Greatswordsperson would face and see how the manuals tell you to deal with that. For this week's class, that meant taking on shields, both in a 1 versus 1 and in a group fight. Overall, this was loads of fun and actually gave us some new insights in why certain regra's In Figueyredo and other manuals are made in the way they are.

Relatively unskilled greatsword users had about a 10/1 'winrate' against someone with at least some shield experience, while a very experienced greatsword user against someone with little experience with the shield had the same rate. This gives at least a strong indication that the reach advantage is pretty crucial. Also, the shield stuff looks kinda terrible, because your form really suffers when you're under pressure in a disadvantaged scenario, so keep that in mind. as i can agree about the importance of reach in combat one of the reasons spears were so popular back then also their cheap price to make/fix
      i dont like that they dont use heavy wepons in this video i know it would be dumbly dangerus but weight was a huge part of a fight back then even in training they would use armor which would make them slower so in a real fight his "attacks" would deal barely any damage to the opponent if any and also a good shield user would not rush into an enemy like that he would walk back while blocking waiting for a good moment or he would block the attack with his shield and then grab it or push down to get an easy stab in the neck or other weak part of armor also touching on that group fight in that situation he would be fucked bc they would just rush his back when his turned and the metal sword and armor would slow him down so no way his blocking his back more then twice [ohhh but what if he didint have any armor??!] THEN HE WOULD DIE bow short spear even a sharp stick made in 2 s would be death for him also in a real fight thousands of man on both sides armor weapons ready how would he use his long sword? as a spear no other way why? bc one swing would kill the people on his side just so his atack can be blocked by an enemy also what would he do if even 2 spear man got him with 1 he could win with 2? no even braking the spears would probably just delay his fate because spear man always carry another weapon like short sword or a short spear let's say he broke one spear now there is a man trying to stab him from far away and one trying to slash his back or throw shit at him now that i think he could win this still a hard fight but one last thing bow the reason shields are second most used weapons after spears bc without one you are dead gone fucked no mater what
      Some thing i fogot ye long swords are amazing wepons but in big grups yyy not realy in a 1v1 it wins most
      A game For HONOR shows well how long swords were used they would carry them by the blade and grab them with the other they would also work well as a spear.mace.axe.shield like? But only when we are talking abaut close fights no archers
      Long sword is good at

      I think the fact that greatswords were most famously employed against pike formations (landsknechte) goes to show reach isn't everything. Zweihander and halberd may be long weapons, but they're absolutely stunted compared to a pike - and spanish rodeleros used large round shields and side-swords to achieve the same objective of breaking through the pell mell once both sides pike walls collided and essentially reached a stalemate where the long and unwieldy pikes could no longer maneuver well enough to abuse their reach.
      In other words, this only holds true so long as you have ample space to use your reach. In an actual battlefield situation where you're forced into a close quarters push of pike for an extended period, short weapons can actually shine again as the deciding factor that breaks the melee in your favor. Combined arms tactics are the real massive advantage.

    • @MugJr0558

      Not always the Romans fought with short swords their could close in with the shield and once they were close enough their enemies couldn't swing giving the Romans a massive fighting advantage, along with the fact there where 1000s of them.

    • @SparkSovereign
      @SparkSovereign 4 месяца назад

      @@MugJr0558the Romans specifically dealt with the reach advantage by disrupting the enemy formation with thrown pilum right before they got into range, giving them the precious moments necessary to close the gap and then take advantage of being up close with shorter weapons. You saw similar tactics in numerous other contexts, like naval boarding actions during the age of piracy using pistols and blunderbusses on the way in to disrupt as much as kill (thus giving you the opportunity to get in with a sword against an opponent defending a barricade).
      Reach basically always wins except when you have a way to close the gap. Heavy armor, disruption tactics, ambush, etc can all potentially do the job, but if you don't have such a trick to use you're basically screwed.

Quite a few of these flourishes have quick stops and changes in direction which would be much slower with any sort of great axe. Great axes have many more hooking techniques that you can't really pull off with a greatsword though. I have some put some serious sparring study into shield work. You can choose to listen or not. Here's some advice. Hope it helps. Attacking the head to block their line of sight only works when the shield is held and used wrong. Not saying they still couldn't potentially get past but it would be much harder if held edge forward and in a slightly extended boxer style guard. The front, top and bottom edges of the shield guard you. The back protects from incidental overlap. The flat side is more for overall coverage past the outside edges. Don't let anything get through the inside edges. Center grip shields are far more maneuverable and my preference. Use the front edge to trap the dominant arm. All power comes from the dominant side. Stop the acceleration before it gains force. Close the distance and don't let off the pressure. They will eventually wear down, open up or just fail. If you fear the blade you will lose. Respect the blade at distance and deny it in close. Thrusts are your friend, especially when they have no shield.

    • @VirtualFechtschule
      @VirtualFechtschule  5 месяцев назад +23

      What you say makes a lot of sense for centre grip shields. We used a strapped shield because they're more representative of what a greatsword would be likely to matched up against in 16th and 17th centuries. And the visibility issues is a thing there. If you specialise in shield work, I can understand centre grip is nice, I like that one slightly better too as it allows for better active shield use as you say. I mean, we obviously train greatsword more than shield, so there's plenty to gain there, but I do feel the visibility is an issue with strapped shields, as cover the right side of the head is quite difficult to do without being the the entire arm over (as opposed to centre grip, where that is just the shield). Anyway, thanks for the feedback!

    • @pluemas
      @pluemas 5 месяцев назад +11

      @@VirtualFechtschule we study targe fighting at my club, and sometimes spar the long sworders. We use exactly the same technique as he is describing here. By using the edge of the shield over the flat, it provides a lot more strength to the parry, whilst covering if the longsword tries to wind or rotate past the parry.
      Using the flat of the shield is weak as it is reliant on your shoulder to resist the blow, whereas you can use proper parry form and offer a much stiffer parry if you follow the technique received above. It also does not block your view, and you leave the parry to the last moment when the greatsword is fully committed so it steals time.
      My advice is that with single handed swords and with shields, to discuss with people who practice them regularly and work to develop stronger parries. You need to frame your body and retain a strong (but not stiff until necessary) arm shape to properly protect yourself. At that point, the ability to move the single handed sword far faster than a greatsword makes the exchange far more even than you are showing. Targe is extremely effective against two handed weapons, when used as a parrying weapon rather than as a weak guard.

    • @VirtualFechtschule
      @VirtualFechtschule  5 месяцев назад +1

      @@pluemas That makes sense. How does it work for you with a targe when closing the opening on your non-shield side though?

    • @pluemas
      @pluemas 5 месяцев назад +3

      @@VirtualFechtschule we have a baskethilt broadsword in the other hand, so it has even more ability to parry than most one handed swords. We train to use the sword first, leading with the dominant hand forward as normal, and only using the shield when necessary if attacks come at the inside. The sword protects the outside. We don't have the front of the shield facing the opponent, it's the rim that points forward and put of the way so that we have full vision, then we can move the rim to intercept and parry (using the true cross) if necessary.
      The philosophy is that rather than having a large board that gets in the way of your vision and the proper use of your main tool (the sword), you have a tool in your offhand that is very reliable and easily able to produce strong parries on one side. This reduces the workload on your brain and sword arm, as you only have to consider parries to the outside or cuts down the centre line.
      It feels strange at first to have a shield and not to put it between yourself and the opponent, but once you accept that a small shield is there to support your sword (rather than how a hand weapon supports a large shield like the scutum or pavise) it becomes fairly natural. It's mostly kept out of the way to give you options while you use the one handed sword to protect yourself as you normally would.
      We have a very similar philosophy with Dirk or cloak.
      I will say, I feel some are being a bit rude in their criticisms. It's been interesting watching your perspective and I'd be curious to see how you develop the style and if you discover any weaknesses to the greatsword through sparring. It seems quite easy to time with good placement and footwork.

      @VirtualFechtschule  5 месяцев назад +3

      @@pluemas Cool, thanks for the explanation! I do reckon that working this against a sword with so much more reach will still be very much in favour of a greatsword, but I also think a more competent shield person will indeed still have more than the 10% succes rate we got. I'll make a post about this soon as well, but consider this a well meant invitation: if we ever meet at an event somewhere, I would love to try and redo this sparring setup to see what we can learn from it. :)

    "Forcing the sheild up and restricting vision" I feel like its avoidable depending on how you block and what head protection you have, since some have better vision, some don't. Additionally, I think that the majority of HEMA practitioners are more intrested in fighting with weapons than learning how best to use a sheild, especially since in HEMA your life is never in real danger. Learing how to use a sheild (to the best of ones ability) has a core purpose of, protection. Back in the medieval age this was how you fight, this is how you learn to kill someone, so, learning the sheild, back then, was literally protecting your life, therfore, most definitely more focus would have been put on that. There is many ways to protect yourself from attacks, but, that is the sheilds main, if not, only purpose. There a many sheilds and people and it is very possible that, a sheild in the hands, of someone else, might contradict your analysis/conclusion. Very interesting video, which inspires thinking, have a good day👍

    i think this is where sparring with real weapons makes significant difference. As someone who did this - have you considered the force the greatsword can put out? if its a steel blade BLOCKING it with a shield will break your arm as the shockwafe from the impact travelös through even if the blade doesnt. You can at best hope to deflect the blow to the side but even that is risky. That said with sharp blades and wooden shields you might actually get the greatsword stuck which can be great as you technicly disarm your opponent in special if the shield is strapped to you and he cant easily pull it away. But it better be a good shield or you will be disarmed - literally

    the biggest advantage shown in this video isn't the weapon, but rather skill, confidence and physicality. The great sword user is moving around, doing multiple swings, using the space. Everyone else basically is standing still waiting to get hit. Even when they have the numbers, they all gotta follow henchmen rules and go in one at a time.

      the context was someone was saying a shield is just for defence so the the person with a shield used the rim to hit him in the neck.
      guessing (though your probs more knowageable then me on this point, so i'd love your opinion) but armour seems more of a weakness to a great weapon than a shield right, if you can just "tank" a blow or two without needed to get the shield up you can get in the range?

    • @VirtualFechtschule
      @VirtualFechtschule  5 месяцев назад +1

      @@ryan1000011 yeah, I would agree. Tanking is dangerous on the head, but on the body it would be doable, so being in armour really changes things. With a greatsword you can still halfsword to find gaps, but that limits your ability to fight multiple opponents effectively much more than a shield would.

    Teamwork tactics need some work. I did some sword play at one point in time. I got kicked out for "being annoying". I'd be the guy batting at your greatsword while your back was turned, just to slow you down and distract you. Then my buddies might get an opening. I really don't think one guy could fight even three people with any level of effectiveness, let alone four. Not doing helicopter moves at least.

    I always thought short people with shields was always effective while tall people with 2 handed weapons(of any kind) were more effective. The angle of the blade would be more difficult if the opponent is shorter. Sort of how proportions of the shields of history had various or entirely different purposes and methods. Like a buckler or a Kite Shield.

    Longer weapon gets first strike (or thrust). Anyone with a shorter weapon combination has to combat the point (the traditional name of the pointy end you'd not want in thrust in you) first to get into range to strike themselves. The greatsword weilder has two strikes, first is free, the second the opponent is in range to trade blows. Look up the term mordhau to get a deeper appreciation of two handed sword fighting.

    I know greatswords and long swords are super popular, but I would love to see more sword and board work on the internet. Shields are criminally underrated n modern media, and historically they’re the main reason anyone survived a battle at all! There’s so much focus on HEMA these days, so why can’t we get regular shield drills too? I personally love my buckler, it’s a game changer, but I only know of a few ways to use it, and there HAS to be more, I know how a zweihander can beat a shield, but why don’t I know how to beat a zweihander with a shield?

      Schools that do Bolognese fencing should theoretically do some Sidesword and Rotella, meaning they'd be quite good at the sword and board thing. Outside of Italy and Spain though, shields had kinda stopped being used in such combat roles by the time lots of fight books were written, so any approach to shield that isn't rotella is going to be very experimental by nature. Which, I suspect, scares off some people

It's an uphill battle trying to fight that weapon with a shorter ranged weapon even with a shield. It's not a slow weapon at all, it can hit very hard and it has a big area of threat since it's a sword.
