- After the last failure 2 weeks ago I thought i should share the reality of buying and owning a boat in the UK.
The weather can really take its toll on all components and also remember the most important lesson - BUYER BEWARE!!!
This is probably a very familiar story to many people buying a second hand boat.

I like it ! I like it ! Couldn't stop watching or smiling even though i've never had a boat, your explaining living in reality with a boat as opposed a caravan, tent, or classic car, it gives one a good feeling of what you can expect if you get one and helps make you far more prepared psychologically,financially and practically for if you do.

Hi, you are so right, I felt exactly the same 5 years ago and 4 boats later it's still the same. time working on the boat is at least 5 times more than time on the water so you have to factor in maintenance and break down time as well not only with the boat but trailer maintenance as well.
long story short my first trip with my wife we went nowhere after launching the boat(engine failed to start) and had lunch on a sinking boat(forgot to put the bung in).
I did have the engine running really well the day before by the way.
Everyone has launched at least once without putting the bung in. I've done it a couple of times. And for some reason the boats only decide to break when you've got them on the water. Never when prepping them the day before!!!
Your problem with the weight of the boat is the foam was not closed cell when they filled the Hull, by now I can 95% guarantee its waterlogged, for example one black bag of wet foam it will take two strong people to lift it, your boat will have roughly 25 + in it so this gives you an idea of the extra weight you have and why the weighbridge topped out so heavy.marine engineering and boat repairs was my trade and I have cut a fair few foam waterlogged boats open, and two of those where the morbass, and I can tell you the diffence in performance is immense, your old Saab should of towed that effortlessly, but it's the wet foam and its weight that caused it struggled
I have had a fair few boats and I can totally relate to everything you are saying, finding the boat that's right for you and what you want to do with it is not easy task, in my experience the bigger the boat the less you will use it, I just want out there fishing so I have found what works perfect for me a 15ft cuddy, handles well on estuary and lochs here in the west of Scotland and so easy tow and handle singlehandedly and the 15hp motor compliments it nicely.

I didn’t believe it when people said BOAT stood for busy out another thousand.... but it really does. In fairness the guy that sold me the boat was a really nice chap but it goes to show.... trust your gut instinct on things. You will always love you boat even though it does tend to let you down on occasions.

@@dp47280 I'm a single mom with two kids, not sure if I can handle a boat alone but I fancy a day out on water, some fishing, maybe even to spend a night in the boat with my children.
No license needed but sometime you need launch permits. Also if you don’t have experience it’s a good idea to get training so that you know what to do, when to do it and what to do if things go wrong.

This is a MARVELOUS video, but you should have left "in the UK" off the title! I'm a Yank, on the other side of The Pond, and I can assure you that ALL boat owners here (including me) go through the precisely the same ups and downs that you so perfectly describe! I'm certain that everyone else in the world does, too. BUT . . .we all live for the day when everything goes right, and we spend a lovely, incomparable day on the water. There's just nothing like it, and I wouldn't trade that experience for anything-despite the costs and disappointments and frustrations of boat ownership.
Hi. Looks like you have the same beginning like me. Low budget boats is more like a project not a use street away. And once all done as should be is quite expensive and can take good could of months unless you have spare few thousand to spend.

A boat will always cost the same whether you buy completed and perfect or a project. It just depends how much money you have at the beginning. What I will say is that I have the confidence having done so much on the boat to take it anywhere and should something go wrong I know I will either fix on the water or at very least get it back in. That experience has to be gained the hard way!!
Sounds like you should just go back to the way things were before. I've got a little inflatable row boat, I'll be testing a pop-up spinnaker sail on the next outing so it might also be a part-time sail boat, and I can carry it around in a bag. It's very tough but if it does get seriously damaged I can just buy another, it's only about a hundred pounds. If I ever upgrade to a solid boat I think I'll be sticking with the small, simple, reliable type like you used to have.
If there is wood in the construction it gets heavy if sodden acts like a sponge. I am now 70 years old owned boats since I was a teenager. What did you expect for that money I notice there are no mud guards on the trailer what were the bearings like did you have a spare wheel ,did you check the studs were not seized what was the winch like? An old 2 stroke did you check the impeller and all the clamps was their a safety harness. What did the boats transom look like. Was the gelcoat ok. We’re the rollers free. My boating history first 12 foot clinker with a Stuart turner inboard. Then built a 12 foot island plastics added a 12 hp Yamaha ( underpowered ) moved to a penta 25hp absolutely rubbish then brand new Johnston evenrude 35 absolute crap kept cooking itself ( warranty ran out having replaced the power head twice) then a 28 hp Suzuki excellent engine. Had the boat for 14 years. Then bought from a pal a 17foot dell que dory with a 125 hp mercury loved it what a sea boat. Had it also 14 years . Then needed a cabin boat wife and 2 kids bought a 20 foot Rinker with 175 mercruser was great for 10 years then engine problems corrosion on the manifolds ( and I never skimped on safety boating on the west coast of Scotland teaches you that) only one call out when having had the engine fully serviced and at the start of the season it cut out on me ( it is scary when you see a helicopter above you and feel the Downdraft ) managed to get the back up engine running and made it back to the mainland. Wife waiting asking how the boat was running well you can imagine her response. Sell boat . bought another next season 17 foot pilot dory with forward cabin quite an old boat., Engine under powered for the boat 25 hp big foot 4 stroke mercury. Next season bought 2nd hand Honda 45 hp 4 stroke great engine suited the boat well. Ran it for several years then went Ito partnership wit my brothers and bought a brand new Preditor with a 75 Hp Honda 4 stroke ( did not like the boat to skittish when fishing it would lean to one side not very stable. Pretty good in a small swell though just not for me preferred the Dory) sold it then bought a Bayliner 192 discovery with a 145 hp mercruser good boat have now had it 7 years ( was 6 years old when purchased) thinking of selling it family now moved on . Will be looking for an older pilot Dory ( if still being made of all my boats owned I loved the dory’s)
Moral of the story boats are addictive but never skimp on safety either at sea or towing. Have fun.

had a Broom Saturn from 1984 to 1989 with a 85 Evenrude Ilive in Leicester. Cheep to buy and I enjoyed it. And sold at a small profit Best was buying the Boat and then selling the Boat. I then moved on to Scuba Diving. Thing is Everyone that I knew in Boating did the same so everyone moved on to a different chapter in there life. met some great people still keep in touch.

@@dp47280 No Mate got a Fleacher two years Ago with a EVENRUDE 150. Nice boat it was a Bombardier Injection one shame they have finished and used the Virus. As the excuse to cease production . As they were not going to spend on Development. I had a motorcycle license Since 1976 so I moved on to Harleys from1993 to present had 15 up to now. Fatboy and V Rod plan to change one for Electric Live Wire in the future.
Im building my 3rd boat now. I got greedy. 15ft, 20ft, now 30ft. I swear im done with this one. My neighbors swear i enjoy building the boats. But i dont. And all my boats get used.

I am considering getting a fishing boat. Just something like a quicksilver 500. I have around 10k to buy a boat, then I figure about 3k for safety equipment, electronics & some initial maintenance. I have a 4x4 pick up so no problem with the towing vehicle. However, having watched several boat ownership vids, I am seriously considering buying some top of the line tackle & spending my money on charter trips. That could all change, if I go to view that "must have" bargain lol. Time will tell. Thank you for your valued opinion on ownership.

I made it 5 minutes in and had to give up. I hate to be down on anyone who puts the effort into making videos for RUclips but wow, speak a bit faster, be more concise, get to the point..! I’m sure there’s loads of great content in this video but I suspect most people fell asleep before reaching it.
You have not started spending yet I have owned my 18,6 kosi cat for number of years and £1000 is averaging per outing once a year spending excluding petrol for my twin 115 Mercury motors
Ouch- now that is expensive. Just started mine up and now the neutral switch seems to have gone.... grrrrrr

Every vid iv seen on boat ownership in U.K. End off in massive upset. But if you get upset then you love it and that makes it all worth it .I love my kids no matter how much the bloody cost hahahaha
All I can say is boats are worth the upset. So are kids!!!!
To be honest I thought this was going to be a useful vlog. Instead It’s a bloke moaning about buying a 1900 quid boat and then it being a bag of trouble then trying to put it right on a shoe string!! It actually made me feel a bit down!!
It’s not really a bag of trouble at all. And anyone can go and throw money at a new trailer, engine and boat. You still have pretty much the same problems. You probably wanted the video of how awesome boating is and how everything works first time every time. Sometimes it does, many times it doesn’t matter if it’s new old, used every day or ignored for 2yrs at a time . Boats need maintenance and if you accept that you will have many yrs of enjoyable boating. Hope that’s cheered you up a little.
BeMoreBear I’m not stupid, I know that boats like everything else need maintaining, its just you seem to make it more complicated than it needs to be - in a rather off putting way, there isn’t a great deal of structure to the way you go about things and you seem to have invited some of your trouble! Anyway hope your boat is back on the water and you are enjoying the nice weather , happy cruising 👍

Oh stop your moaning, sounds like you are your own worst enemy & you don't check or test anything. A car struggling to tow or launch 1000 kilo of boat, no really? You don't say!
Interesting - I check everything twice but at the end of the day things go wrong on the water when engines and boat are under load etc. Unfortunately I didn't have access to a weigh bridge the moment I picked up the boat. And the car could tow 1800KG so still within limits. And... I don't have anything to moan about!! Thank you for your input though.
