"I am not a Kruu..." this chick is on the road to have the most fights in Thailand history and says she's no Kruu. While in the US we have dudes that have never climbed over the ropes forcing ppl to call them "kruu." Sylvia is a humble OG.
northernmagi she definitely has the best combat channel going. She is open about her successes and her setbacks. No doubt about it the chick can straight up fight! Very inspirational.
Here in San Francisco, at my daughter's gym, we have two former Lumpini and Rajadamnern champions who would laugh in embarrassment if you ever called them "Ajarn" or "Kru."
I found this seminar incredibly helpful; figured I would add times for the techniques. 7:06 Using clinch as a means to defend against a reach advantage 11:00 1. Proper framing for the half position 18:30 2. Controlling the opponent using technique over power 24:03 3. Angling off to create space to land the knee 28:48 4. The Lock 40:10 5. Face smoosh (lock escape) 45:21 6. Face smoosh defense 51:08 7. Arm hook 57:05 Review
My Notes on Sylvie's clinch intro How the clinch is her saviour as a shorter fighter Arm around neck, elbow pushed into front of chest, leverage Keep head in nook for contact control "burrowed in like a tick" Spin from closer position is easier that further away, like swinging ball on a string Manoeuvre using whole body not just muscling around with arms Ideally don't make space by moving back, but by pushing opponent back (though can pivot) Escape from face mush #1 (easiest but for some reason uncommon) move face #2 wrench arm 46:00 Secret bonus move Your left arm is inside Thumb down so elbow pointing up Get your elbow up over inside Then crank it in, like uppercut, then you have control Think of clinch more like a marathon, constant jockeying for position, rather than decisive "I've scored" To Sylvie's thinking, less about fixed combos, and more about general principles applied with intuition (built from practice)
Sorry I know I’m posting a lot! Lol but just watching her move these men around effortlessly using PURE technique and not force is an absolute joy to watch. We don’t get many opportunities to see a master at work. She probably would refer to herself as a masterBut I know what one looks like when I see one
I remember the first time I realized Cheng Pei Pei as the Golden Swallow was my first female hero, and the paradox that while it didn't matter that she was a woman, it still felt good to know that I had found one. The more of your stuff I watch, the more I think I found my second woman hero. Watching your early recordings with Master K, and him telling you to thrust out your hips for the knee, and you having trouble with it, to you making videos ten years later, scarred up, teaching how the greatest muay thai fighters of all time have taught you to approach the concept of knees differently, hits me right in the gut. What a story, and what a hero.
You're *that* teacher. the type that, like a math teacher I had, could teach a 10-minute lesson on calculus, and then you know pretty much everything about integrals by the end.
I am only 22 but i remember playing Altered Beast as a youngn, now when clinching i think "Welcome to your doom" :) I feel blessed to have found your channel. Teaching not just technique, but also of the history and culture, the tradition and the why? I feel like a kid in a candy shop. I will subscribe to the MTL with my next check and i will learn from you in person one day!!! Living legend, Thank YOU!
I've stumbled upon this video, I don't know anything about muai Thai, but the treasure of body mechanics, proprioception, balance, and weight distribution are simply priceless for any kind of martial artist, and even for dancers ! I personally teach salsa, and practice bjj I appreciate very much this bulk of knowledge and skills.
Sir, you stumbled upon the best clinch instructional I've ever seen and I love love love to clinch and I play instructional videos for every meal! And I have a lot of meals 😅
@@HAKIMJESUSISLORD wow, that's a big partner. Use the "Sylvie"; get your forehead under their chin and lock it with a long clinch. It's mean but effective. Double unders, body lock if you're allowed. If you can break the posture (maybe the forearm across neck demonstrated in video) you'll be in a good spot since it's going to be difficult for 6'8 to get hips back. Depending on your height disparity it might be difficult to get to the body if you do get them crunched over, if so attack the legs
@@HAKIMJESUSISLORD that's a bit tricky at first, but with continued sparring, I hope you come away with the same conclusion I did, that once your inside game is great, you prefer a taller opponent, like Tyson did. They can't do much up close, because they can't snake those long libs as easily. It's a rouse, keep working. That's the old world talking to ya, and you still believe it. Course, I'm a Judoka, so for me, I balk at the tall and lumbering. More like "I got up for this?" than "Where is my sling and stone, cause that dude's Goliath..."
Etymology of the word “Kru” is kuru, guru, meaning weight or heaviness, meaning the duty of a teacher is heavy. It’s not all about knowledge or mastery, it’s also responsibility.
Had a Thai trainer many years ago in Australia it was all clinch clinch clinch! I'm to old now to throw good kicks anymore but I can still clinch the shit out of people! Thanks Sylvie for your great determination and love for a beautiful sport ! Respect from oz
About a hundred years ago I started watching Sylvia training with her teacher in a basement in ... New Jersey I think it was. I cannot get how what this woman has done. She's amazing.
You ARE ABSOLUTELY A KRU Ms. Sylvie!!! You break things down and highlight key points like the champ you are. So blessed to be able to see this here in Rural Tn!
Wow I effectively learned the clinch watching this video and able to teach it somewhat. This is truly a gem, thank you so much Sly!!! I can kind of figure out how dumps and sweeps work from this
Growing up in Southeast Asia, I started learning Muay Thai before Sylvie was born but I am still learning from her video. Great work and thank you for your video. Awesome stuff.
Good afternoon everyone. Silvi I am one of your patrons, I congratulate you the seminar spectacularly, I encourage you to upload more material like this seminar, it is essential for the entire Muay Thai community to share knowledge, for many of us it helps us to shape our classes in the gym Thanks from Spain
Absolutely excellent seminar, the hour felt like ten minutes, principles, basic and not-so-basic techniques, details, jokes, from someone who has very objectively proven these skills time and again against opponents who are almost always bigger. Teaching is a very different skill than doing, and Sylvie has it. Maybe from all the years of being such a receptive student to a variety of high level instructors? Yes, but it's more than that. Great video, thank you for sharing, ka kun maak krap
That elbow in the chest/clavicle unlocks a huge part of the clinch I feel like nobody talks about, a lot of instructors would have you hang on the neck and attempt to muscle your opponent , thank you Sylvie
I so often give just mildly entertaining or informative videos a thumbs up. Therefore I would like to give this one like a thousand. Really amazing content that you just put out there. Thanks a lot!
A very nice video! I love the way you explain things: it's very clear that you know exactly what it works and what not because you have experienced all of that... I also love the relaxness of your way of showing things... I live in Italy and I'm 57, but if I had the possibility I will come there just to see you teaching, there's always a lot to learn from people with experience 🙂
Thank you so much for putting this online! I train in Finland and we really don’t practice enough clinching which bothers me a lot. I liked the thing you said about painted nails💅🏼sometimes I forget that the strenght doesn’t come from our fingers/wrists
Sylvie, you are inspiration. Not only your work to document technics is remarquable, but your way to teach is so clear. You although have a way to think and to fight very honest. Would have loved to join the group and learn not only from the expert, but also from the person. Only complain which is not : each time I see one of your videos, I think I have to change everything I thought I got right from my training in Thaïland. Correcting these automatisms seem harder than getting new ones. Thanks for your smile.
This is an amazing resource. So helpful to see you going around and correcting everybody's technique rather than just watching you demonstrate it yourself.
I should've watched this video again before this morning's training because my coach decided to work on clinching today. He said I did well fighting it and wrenching myself out. But, I am sure I would have done way better had I remembered Sylvie's clinch tips and techniques. Sylvie, you may not be a Kru, but I would absolutely love to learn from you if I ever had the opportunity. I like the way you show explain, show, and instruct in this Clinch seminar. You are definitely in your element here. 😉👍
pretty much almost always just kicked, punched, elbowd and kneed in training since the clinch doesnt seem to exist in german mt "what a shame!" ... and then few days ago, for the first time i just did go for it with a partner and TOTALLY fell in love

Watching this is fantastic, you can see why americans who are big into wrestling end up being great clinchers in mma as there a lot of similar concepts, they thais are spot on with to get good at clinching you need to clinch spar/wrestle, all the drilling in the world wont work until you learn how to apply pressure against resisting opponents and escape under resistance too. Love watching that face push/smush escape and relaising its the same as a grappling wizzer etc. This is hands down the best tutorial on the basics of clinching for free online. (for reference Im a bjj blue belt/submission grappler for like 8 years but ive moved to k1/thai due to back problems so Im very happy to see I can apply some of the things I learnt before to a new sport :) )
I had loved your session Sylvie, wanna go further 😅 come in France, south Riviera, I will be there. ❤ because Clinching is underestimated here. Wish U the best, see ya
I enjoyed the entire video, some of the concepts were never even explained to me (7 years in). In fact, people more experienced than me negated some of the ideas. You are exceptionally good in explaining, I like your comparison, I use the same kind of ones. Great channel, subscribed!
Thank you for posting this I've been working a lot on my clinching lately and I've been leaning towards on being a knee/clinch fighter since I'm a bigger person. Cheers all the way from Maryland!
im so gratefull for this, i began learning 4 months ago and this is my first introduction to clinch, im also small for my bw so this is like a ring to the finger for me. Thank you so much!
Amazing explanation. I couldn´t praise enough the work you´re doing for people outside of Thai culture. You´re opening the Muay Thai Tailand style for everyone who loves the sport but isn´t able to communicate with Thai fighters. Thank you!!!!
I've watched this girl evolved from the time she was being trained by Master K in his basement to this day. She definitely came a long way. Much respect to you Sylvie!
I am so glad I got to learn from you and Kru Nu during my short visit in Pattaya. Thank you for continuing to share your knowledge online. I hope I can re-visit the gym with my family some time next year.
A long time ago I didn’t even know what kru meant but we always called our coach kru until I realize it meant teacher/master. My teacher malaipet sasiprapa has always been so open and loving towards so many other muay thai fighters and teachers that it truly shows people like him and you show this sport to not just be brutal but also convey true kindness. Great video keep it up!
"I am not a Kruu..." this chick is on the road to have the most fights in Thailand history and says she's no Kruu. While in the US we have dudes that have never climbed over the ropes forcing ppl to call them "kruu." Sylvia is a humble OG.
She will be recognised as possibly the most successful farang to fight on Thai soil. And it's very well deserved too.
northernmagi she definitely has the best combat channel going. She is open about her successes and her setbacks. No doubt about it the chick can straight up fight! Very inspirational.
Bad Wolf MMA this 👌💯
@เสือ - Payak indeeeeeed and you have to "wai" them every 2mn with a wai above your head like they are some King of Siam...

Nice job, thanks man
This is amazing. Finally someone demystifies clinching starting from the basics! Silvie has a real gift for articulating complex concepts.
I
My Notes on Sylvie's clinch intro
How the clinch is her saviour as a shorter fighter
Arm around neck, elbow pushed into front of chest, leverage
Keep head in nook for contact control "burrowed in like a tick"
Spin from closer position is easier that further away, like swinging ball on a string
Manoeuvre using whole body not just muscling around with arms
Ideally don't make space by moving back, but by pushing opponent back (though can pivot)
Escape from face mush
#1 (easiest but for some reason uncommon) move face
#2 wrench arm 46:00
Secret bonus move
Your left arm is inside
Thumb down so elbow pointing up
Get your elbow up over inside
Then crank it in, like uppercut, then you have control
Think of clinch more like a marathon, constant jockeying for position, rather than decisive "I've scored"
To Sylvie's thinking, less about fixed combos, and more about general principles applied with intuition (built from practice)
Thank you for that!

Conventional wisdom: Don't clinch with someone taller and heavier than you
Sylvie: Hold my Chang
This made me laugh aloud.
It sucks trust me I tried doing it to a sparring partner that is 6' 8" such a bad idea. But I think I'm gonna try it again after watching this video

Amazing seminar :) the concept of not using hands really is a beautiful detail in taking away space and learning to control someone

Hi Sylvie Thank You so much for making this available for free! This was a fantastic workshop and you are a great teacher!!
This is really free lol that's crazy. 5'5 guy here. Usually one of the smallest in the class. I'm gonna utilize these tactics. Thank you

This video was very informative, especially for me who can't afford to go to a gym yet. Now I won't be as lost when I go to one.
Absolutely brilliant explanations of principles and nuanced techniques - invaluable fight-tested knowledge being shared here. Thank you!
what an outstanding teacher
This is awesome. I feel like I have a much much better understanding of the clinch now.
I've watched this girl evolved from the time she was being trained by Master K in his basement to this day. She definitely came a long way. Much respect to you Sylvie!
Sylvie is amazing great techniques and great teaching
I am so glad I got to learn from you and Kru Nu during my short visit in Pattaya. Thank you for continuing to share your knowledge online. I hope I can re-visit the gym with my family some time next year.
Thank you so much for this. This is gonna help me a lot for sure.
The details. Man great explanations sylvie!
