  • Geoffrey Canada's 'Harlem Children's Zone' has helped put historically low-achieving students in New York on academic par with their grammar-school peers. Over the years, the HCZ introduced several ground-breaking efforts: in 2000, The Baby College® parenting workshops; in 2001, the Harlem Gems® pre-school program; also in 2001, the HCZ Asthma Initiative, which teaches families to better manage the disease; in 2004, the Promise Academy, a high-quality public charter school; and in 2006, an obesity program to help children stay healthy. CNN's Anderson Cooper reports.

I used to go this school, Promise Academy 1. It was great to go there, teachers actually cared.

Here in Sacramento, CA. we have our known Geoffrey Canada...his name is Kevin Johnson...founder of St. Hope Academy Charter schools in Oak Park, CA. Mr. Johnson is now the Major of Sacramento, CA. and although he is missed still in the St. Hope system of education, it is easy to see the strength of his actions. Pres. Obama is correct by announcing that America needs more "Harlem Zones," and we need to open up our hearts and our pocket books to the education of our American children...Now!

Transparency. People are more accepting when they see for themselves.

My only issue is about the choice of college. What about the students who do not want to go to college and want to pursue a trade?

Secretary? In the state we are now, he should be president. Education is still underestimated far to much.

"Chances of their child succeding in life were reduced" um kinda harsh dont you think? Not all kids who live in harlem and go to public school turn up screwups. Besides there is more than one charter school in the area.
