L.A Woman Song Facts: Morrison recorded his vocals in the studio bathroom to get a fuller sound. He spent a lot of time in there anyway because of all the beer he drank during the sessions. Morrison got the idea for the "City of Night" lyric from John Rechy's 1963 book of the same name. The book describes a sordid world of sexual perversion, which Morrison translated to Los Angeles. The first line, "Well, I did a little down about an hour ago," is a reference to a barbituate, specifically Rorer 714. Doors drummer John Densmore said in the The Story of L.A. agree it was the tip off point.... I feel what is impressive lyrically is it has that but also draws out a larger scape of the city & culture. that modern freeways. the fast mobility. surrounding by the ancient hills, canyons & desert. the fast movement in & out of different scense, races & levels of wealth. its all here. the hiways shape the female body form of LA. all its complexity, power, addiction & influences on the greater culture.
One of the greatest songs in rock history, for sure! For one reason or another I didn't like it at first listen, many years ago. But then it grew on me, and now I look upon my younger self as an ignorant idiot.

This song, and the entire album actually, benefitted from having Jerry Sheff on bass instead of relying on Manzarek's Rhodes bass keyboard. Even though there's not a lot of variation in this bass line, it drives the song very well and allows Manzarek's piano and Krieger's guitar to fill the spaces so well.
It might seem strange to mention The Stranglers in a comment on a Doors reaction but their cover of "Walk on by" has a heavy Doors vibe which JP would love.

As said before: This album is extremely energetic. We also think there is this double meaning of talking about a specific lady and personifying LA. Since we live in Germany your videos usually come out between 1 and 2 pm. We get notified then and have a look at them.
Right out of the gate, those first sounds make me picture a really fast car. The change ups are epic and this is… the ultimate driving song. I listen whenever I can but that tends to be early evening after a meal and cleanup.

He always adlib and jumps and down....and in the concert I saw striped down to his underwear......boots....socks......pant(brown leather) shirt......belt were thrown in the audience which ripped these garments apart....people were fighting over them ....the cops came in to break things up ....some people were arrested.....all this happening during each song or jam they singing......I and my friends were high....but I definitely remember that.....3 hours of performance ...Jim was in his briefs ...... Was golfing with my Bro yesterday and found a Mojo golf ball and gave it to him. So of course got the mojo rising thing going on to the next tee and every shot he hit with it thereafter. Got into my car in the parking lot and the song next on my USB playlist was LA Woman. And here JP is completing the trifecta of coincidences involving this tune. One of the Door's best.
Great song, actual bass guitar on this one instead of keyboard. I used to play this cover in a band back in the day. I have to say that John Densmore is a great drummer with really cool jazz sensibilities and is just criminally underrated.

I never hear anyone bring up the bittersweet quality of this song. Sure, it's one hell of a ride (don't play it in your car unless you want a ticket...) and the playing throughout is jubilant and uplifting, but it's also a song that metaphorizes Los Angeles as a lost, lonely and broken woman, who is "so alone". To me, the song represents urban alienation, something that I know only too much about. And the music, albeit a "love letter" to L.A., doesn't hide the fact that the lyrics are sadly observing the city's seedy underbelly. 5-star song. Fantastic. Even Morrison's drunken slur of a vocal can't ruin it. If anything, it makes the song sound more authentic!
well said... its a study into the narcissism & greed of the culture & the bitter fruit that yields. morrison's insights into the sociological pulse & undercurrent of the western modern culture are vastly underrrated.

And prudes don't like anyone to have that kind of artistic freedom to express themselves. I think they were jealous of him for being good looking and smart.

I watch your videos at all different times of day. Most often I'll check in just after noon. LA Woman is my favorite Doors song. It's the perfect song to listen to while driving at night. Jerry Scheff on bass brings so much to this song and to the whole album, the Doors' masterpiece.

In fact, it is about the perfect blues-rocker: the way it gradually builds; Jim singing about as well as anyone; and the real star Ray and his driving bass line (edit - now realise it's Jerry Scheff) and interesting keyboard excursions. Brilliant. When do I tune in? Soon (Oh Soon The Time) after you post them, unless I am out for the day or away on the Isle of Wight (without the internet).

I usually kick back and watch your videos in the evening, Justin; a little treat towards the end of a busy day. This song has also been an evening kick-back thing for me, ever since I was at school in the 1970's. I and some of my school cronies would chill to this track, inside a particular garden shed. This garden shed was in fact my friend's room, where we would all hang out and listen to The Doors and other bands such as the Moody Blues and Beggars Opera, as an escape from homework.

I check all the sites I follow, first thing in the morning. I watch anything I'm interested in. Very rarely, I will put something in the "watch later" folder. I have a fairly long queue of songs there. They go back maybe a month and a half. I check email, youtube, checking account, and a Beatles' chat page I comment on, pretty much in that order. I check again in the evening.
Due to the time difference (I'm in UK) I listen in the Evening. I can imagine listening to this band playing this in a bar downtown ,seems to have that vibe.I like the Honky Tonk style piano and that groove the band has.

This song is referring to the city of Los Angles, not an actual woman. When he sings "I see your hair is burning," he's speaking about the fires that annually come to the Hollywood Hills of Los Angles from the dreaded "Santa Anna" winds every year. All of the lyrics are about the city's streets, Highways, and seedier sides of L.A.'s nightlife, and so forth. "Or just another lost Angel..." Some great lyrics to go along with this exceptional music.
LA as a microcosm of the modern Western culture... the media entertainment empire city at the western edge of the culture. A region that first lured people via gold. luck, risk & opulence has always been the lure... morrison was underrated in understanding the depth of the american culture.
Never been to L.A. or the US for that matter, but this song encapsulates the "sound of L.A." like no other for me, maybe with the exception of a few Chilli Peppers songs. As far as I know Robby Krieger, their guitar player, came from flamenco & spanish guitar playing. And with the history of L.A. this switch-up you mentioned fits the theme perfectly...just like that dark bluesy part. Billy Idol had a nice cover version of this song. He is a huge doors fan and even had a cameo in Oliver Stone´s "The Doors".
agree, chili peppers deserve their due. they were clearly influenced by morrison, yet brought their own signature too... one of the few bands who can summon forward the large scape vision of the modern West.

When I'm done with work (at home), I go to my subscription page and que up everything that looks interesting from the last 24 hours and start working through the list, sometimes I don't make it through, and I leave them for the next day.
About 50:50 between my midday lunch break and evening. It's evening now. I watch most JP videos, although only some move me to comment. Classic track by the Doors. It reminds me that, at the time, many considered Rock music to be dangerous and it was hated by older establishment figures. This was particularly the case with a band like the Doors, with their perceived links to drugs and counterculture in general.
.When it is something I know will be good, like this, I will I usually watch with my morning coffee and breakfast. When I have my doubts it may be much later in the day. Rarely I may wait a day or two but that is usually if something has kept me from watching.

The 2000 NY Mets used to play this after the 3rd out was made after all home game victories. No idea why but it was a “fan thing”. As for you sir, I play Mon-Fri videos at 8:15am as I’m going through work spreadsheets. Alice Cooper(before they see known) opened for the Doors(late 60's). They freaked out the drug induced crowd so much.,they literally cleared the room. Everyone ran in fear!. Step Gordon(who became their manager) thought if they have that kind of impact we can reverse that apeal 😆
The Doors as a whole were. Funny story during the sessions: it was difficult for Jerry to play the bass on Riders on the storm. Ray thought he was joking since he was Elvis' bass player, and told him that he had to find a way, since it sounded too good.
I multitask when “watching” your videos. 8:00am is when I go to work and 12:00pm is when I have lunch. If there’s something I’m really interested in, then I will make time to stop, drop, and listen (SDL). For me, there’s about 1 SDL per week to two weeks on your channel. I’m finicky about music, like your dad. :) The Doors are a multitask listen for me.
Great, great song with an excellent groove - yes, a personification of LA as a woman, by Mr Mojo Risin' (an anagrammatical Jim Morrison) and his bandmates. FWIW, I usually listen late at night, in breaks in my work (I work evenings through to early morning) - but that's here in New Zealand, so I've no idea when it would be for you!
For this album they added a bass player and a second guitar player. Jim was drunk when they recorded this song, but I think he got the feeling he was after.

cool thing about morrison's lyrics by this point was they were more concise & less abstract. yet they were very dense w/ symbolic meaning & depth. more blake or whitman like then his early poetry. imo, more directly powerful. You could take a lot of lines out of this, but 2 passages that are so spot on about our culture are: motel, money, murder, madness. tight alliteration & densely packed. motel implies no ownership. money the lifeblood to feed the beast (addiction, greed or to flaunt) at all costs. murder is the limit and means people will go to in such a dangerous & paranoid landscape. & madness reflects how combustive its potential is to destroy the community or the nations body. the 60's was a violent period wh/ by the early 70s had hollowed people out. those lyrics capture it well... the other one is: never saw a woman so alone. a wealthy city where power was built around what you can get outside--> in vs inside--> out. that atmosphere breeds envy, narcissism, materialism & greed. it can bring the lucky ones wealth & fame but leave them & the masses also hollow & always in need of someone elses approval.... very insightful views on our modern western culture & its pulse, wh/ cyclically hasnt changed much, if at all. maybe worse. & perhaps that is what haunted him vision wise.
By the way, 'Mr. Mojo Risin'' is an anagram of 'Jim Morrison'.

This is such an awesome tune! If I had to pick two Doors favorites, they would be this and The End, though so many great ones are in their catalog! I am an over the road truck driver. I choose to drive days, so I watch RUclips in the evenings.

This song has also been an evening kick-back thing for me, ever since I was at school in the 1970's. I and some of my school cronies would chill to this track, inside a particular garden shed. This garden shed was in fact my friend's room, where we would all hang out and listen to The Doors and other bands such as the Moody Blues and Beggars Opera, as an escape from homework.

I check all the sites I follow, first thing in the morning. I watch anything I'm interested in. Very rarely, I will put something in the "watch later" folder. I have a fairly long queue of songs there. They go back maybe a month and a half. I check email, youtube, checking account, and a Beatles' chat page I comment on, pretty much in that order. I check again in the evening.
Due to the time difference (I'm in UK) I listen in the Evening.
I can imagine listening to this band playing this in a bar downtown ,seems to have that vibe.I like the Honky Tonk style piano and that groove the band has.
THIS is my absolute favorite Doors tune! To me, it had everything I could have wanted from The Doors, plus it was nodding towards progressive!

This song is referring to the city of Los Angles, not an actual woman. When he sings "I see your hair is burning," he's speaking about the fires that annually come to the Hollywood Hills of Los Angles from the dreaded "Santa Anna" winds every year. All of the lyrics are about the city's streets, Highways, and seedier sides of L.A.'s nightlife, and so forth. "Or just another lost Angel..." Some great lyrics to go along with this exceptional music.
LA as a microcosm of the modern Western culture... the media entertainment empire city at the western edge of the culture. A region that first lured people via gold. luck, risk & opulence has always been the lure... morrison was underrated in understanding the depth of the american culture.
Never been to L.A. or the US for that matter, but this song encapsulates the "sound of L.A." like no other for me, maybe with the exception of a few Chilli Peppers songs. As far as I know Robby Krieger, their guitar player, came from flamenco & spanish guitar playing. And with the history of L.A. this switch-up you mentioned fits the theme perfectly...just like that dark bluesy part. Billy Idol had a nice cover version of this song. He is a huge doors fan and even had a cameo in Oliver Stone´s "The Doors".
agree, chili peppers deserve their due. they were clearly influenced by morrison, yet brought their own signature too... one of the few bands who can summon forward the large scape vision of the modern West.

About 50:50 between my midday lunch break and evening. It's evening now. I watch most JP videos, although only some move me to comment.
Classic track by the Doors. It reminds me that, at the time, many considered Rock music to be dangerous and it was hated by older establishment figures. This was particularly the case with a band like the Doors, with their perceived links to drugs and counterculture in general.
.When it is something I know will be good, like this, I will I usually watch with my morning coffee and breakfast. When I have my doubts it may be much later in the day. Rarely I may wait a day or two but that is usually if something has kept me from watching.

The 2000 NY Mets used to play this after the 3rd out was made after all home game victories. No idea why but it was a “fan thing”. As for you sir, I play Mon-Fri videos at 8:15am as I’m going through work spreadsheets. I don’t play weekend videos until night and sometimes I stop it if I’m just not groovin’, that’s a rare thing though JP.

The Soft Parade (song) is close to progressive and it takes you on a trip with its stream of conscious lyrics then you have Touch Me from the same album with those horns and strings. STRONGER THAN DIRT.

Simmer, and gently bring to the boil. Fave band , and fave album. The tempo changes are spot on! Robbie at his best, with some killer guitar breaks.
Alice Cooper(before they see known) opened for the Doors(late 60's). They freaked out the drug induced crowd so much.,they literally cleared the room. Everyone ran in fear!. Step Gordon(who became their manager) thought if they have that kind of impact we can reverse that apeal 😆

I multitask when “watching” your videos. 8:00am is when I go to work and 12:00pm is when I have lunch. If there’s something I’m really interested in, then I will make time to stop, drop, and listen (SDL). For me, there’s about 1 SDL per week to two weeks on your channel. I’m finicky about music, like your dad. :) The Doors are a multitask listen for me.
Great, great song with an excellent groove - yes, a personification of LA as a woman, by Mr Mojo Risin' (an anagrammatical Jim Morrison) and his bandmates. FWIW, I usually listen late at night, in breaks in my work (I work evenings through to early morning) - but that's here in New Zealand, so I've no idea when it would be for you!

For this album they added a bass player and a second guitar player. Jim was drunk when they recorded this song, but I think he got the feeling he was after.

cool thing about morrison's lyrics by this point was they were more concise & less abstract. yet they were very dense w/ symbolic meaning & depth. more blake or whitman like then his early poetry. imo, more directly powerful. You could take a lot of lines out of this, but 2 passages that are so spot on about our culture are: motel, money, murder, madness. tight alliteration & densely packed. motel implies no ownership. money the lifeblood to feed the beast (addiction, greed or to flaunt) at all costs. murder is the limit and means people will go to in such a dangerous & paranoid landscape. & madness reflects how combustive its potential is to destroy the community or the nations body. the 60's was a violent period wh/ by the early 70s had hollowed people out. those lyrics capture it well... the other one is: never saw a woman so alone. a wealthy city where power was built around what you can get outside--> in vs inside--> out. that atmosphere breeds envy, narcissism, materialism & greed. it can bring the lucky ones wealth & fame but leave them & the masses also hollow & always in need of someone elses approval.... very insightful views on our modern western culture & its pulse, wh/ cyclically hasnt changed much, if at all. maybe worse. & perhaps that is what haunted him vision wise.
