I started using this book when I was a total beginner, and I read about one story every one or two weeks during several months, so I was intermediate by the time I finished it. I really enjoyed it, but my only gripe was with the romanization. It was so distracting to me, and it was holding me back from learning to read hangul properly so I literally just grabbed a black marker and blacked out every single romanized word in the book 😂 So now my copy looks like a mess with half the text blacked out, but I'm glad I did it because it became one of the most useful resources to me as a beginner-lower intermediate learner
Same! The romanization is currently driving me a bit bonkers, so I’ve been slowly using whiteout to get rid of it. 😅 I’m glad I kinda learned how to read before I got the book.
I bought it near the beginning of the year, and realized i needed more basic words and grammar knowledge before trying to use it. However, it's very good at getting you to keep vocabulary in your mind long term.
This is a great review. I've been learning for a year and a half now. This book is easy, but what makes it hard is remembering the vocabulary and words as I read. So I'm thinking that is why some words are shown numerous times for repetition and exposure.
I got this book as a birthday present a few weeks ago 🙂 I really love how it is structured with the texts that start short and get longer and longer so even if you are at a beginner level you don't get demotivated by the amount right from the start. And now I am able to understand what some idols or actors are talking about, when they mention things like "Heungboo and Nolbu" 😄
Your hair Natalia 😍. It get's prettier each time. I really like how you review material. I did not get the book, as I am not for folktales, meaning speaking animals and stuff. I really loved that you mentioned in the end, for what purpose that book is and that for conversational purpose other books are probably better. I feel TTMIK and Lingo Mastery have some good options in terms dialoges and for all those who like stories more, Olly Richards short stories is alright, in the Upper Beginner, lower intermediate range.
Omg I literally bought this book last week and now you made a video about it. What a coincidence lol. I really wanted a book specifically for reading and vocabulary because until now I've only studied grammar and listened to a few podcasts here and there, which I came to realize wasn't enough. I was glad to see that it's appropriate for beginners because that was something that worried me a little, but as I started reading from it I realized it's exactly what I need for my level. There are enough words that I already know so I don't feel too overwhelmed/intimidated, but also enough new words so I can enrich my vocabulary. The grammar used is also pretty easy (so far), so I'm considering this a successful purchase. :)
Thanks for the review. I bought this last year when the pandemic started but haven’t had much time to look at it. Your review is motivating me to get back to it. 감사합니다
Thanks for the review. Short stories in the Target language with translation WITH a native speaker providing the audio is my favorite way to learn until I can get to straight native materials.
Natalia, sorry if I say something wrong, my listening and my reading are better than my writing and speaking skills. I am very grateful for your master list! With SKKU course in coursera and kmooc I have been improving a lot. What I avoided to learn and procrastinated since 2016 is now so clear in my mind. I am currently in beginner 2 now and already plan my schedule for intermediate. THANK YOU SO MUCH!
Could you please review Olly Richard's _Short stories in Korean for Intermediate learners_ especially since its aimed at self-learners.I've been eyeing the book for quite a while now but I don't know whether its worth taking the plunge. It would be great to hear your thoughts on it!
I actually have this book but I have yet to complete it, being that I am also using several other resources, such as hippocrene Tuttle Klear and ttmik. I feel like for either one of these two books, Olly and Korean stories for beginners ,you need to know at least 2,000 commonly used words.
I love Olly Richard's Short Stories in Korean for Intermediate learner! I had a hard time putting that book down; the stories kept me coming back. Im sad that i finished it because they only have that one book. Typically there is enough context to get the gist of the story without knowing every word.
This is 2 years old, but in case somebody is reading this now - All his books for all different languages have the same exact stories. I have the Spanish one and when I bought the French one as a gift for my niece it had the exact same stories. Another reviewer speculated he just wrote them in English and had them translated by somebody else. Like the Korean one has people kissing on the cheeks as a greeting, something more from French culture than Korean. Also the choice of vocab for me {Spanish book} was quite poor. All the words were either advanced or way too easy for the advertised level. Add to that his RUclips channel seems to be just light fluffy "cozy" videos ABOUT language learning, rather than actual language learning content, with several pitches to buy his books, just have turned me off from him in general.
Just started to learn Korean and for me and at my age it is a bit of a challenge. But I do love the fact that you have given a view in getting some learning material. Thanks
I bought this book a few months ago and I honestly did not like it that much. In my opinion, when reading a story, it was always kind of repetitive. What I liked was the fact that the translation was right next to it but even the translation, a few times it didn’t quite match. Also sometimes there were words that were quite advanced but no translation was directly given (as in the vocabulary list at the end of the story). So I don’t think I would recommend this book 🤔 (maybe that’s because I intermediate level and it was targeted for total beginners)
I agree with this. I have actually been reading this book with my Korean student as it can help her with English and help me with Korean, and she has often said that some of the translations are a bit off and not very accurate. So we often struggle to decipher what it actually means. I also agree that there are some words in the story that are not placed in the vocabulary list that really should be.
Thank you so much for this review! I've been eyeing this book for a while, but wasn't sure. After watching your review, I see it's just what I'm looking for. 감사합니다!
Hello ~ I invite you to my korean book reading channel ~ 😊 Audiobook channel in Korean. I hope you enjoy my channel ~ Welcome to Channel Books. I'm really sorry if this invitation disturbed you 🙏
Can you please recommend some books written in Korean (not textbook) for English speakers who are beginners at Korean? I’m wanting to read some cozy/happy/beautiful books but I don’t know where to start. I’m wanting a small book to cary in my purse to practice reading wherever I go. I don’t want books about murder or sex. Any recommendations are appreciated. Thank you.
I think this book is great to start reading in korean, although it was a bit annoying for me listening to the stories coz it was so slow and choppy as you said which is a little annoying if your not a beginner.
Hi Natalia, I was wondering if you recommend any audio learning tools? I’d like to immerse myself in the language to help expedite my proficiency. Ideally, when I’m not book learning, I’d like to just play something in the background for repetitive learning. I have a job where I could just have my headphones on all day and I’m hoping there’s something I could listen to nonstop to learn more/improve my Korean. I’m a total beginner, but a fast learner. Thanks for any insight! Appreciate you!
ive watched basically all of your textbook reviews and i cant decide which i want as my first textbook! I'm looking for an affordable one, do you have a favourite that fits with what i want ? :)
Then which book in the sam register (learning more about culture, practice reading comprehension) is the best according to you ? Any recommendation ? Indeed i dony really like romanization

Good idea! Redacted version i suppose 😂.

This gave me chills I literally just bought that book 😂

I got this book for Christmas last year and I’ve loved it!
That's good! It's definitely good for learning where some aspects of Korean culture are rooted!!
