USB Type-C, Intel 10th Gen and minor changes add up to a one-of-a-kind laptop experience with some kick. I am unabashedly a fan of the Surface Laptop 13.5. But has Microsoft been able to convince me that the new Surface Laptop 3 is worth my time over the Surface Laptop 2, and redeem itself from the underwhelming 15-inch version? You bet it did.

I agree completely with this video. I don't know why I love it considering other laptops have better screen, battery, specs, etc but for some reason, I love the way this laptop feels. I am a big fan of Surface Laptop. Ordered my Surface Laptop 3 - Black color.
I received my sandstone on Tuesday
@@christopherliang6879 I was torn between Black and Sandstone. Sandstone looks beautiful. May be on Surface Laptop 5. I will take it 😛
Design counts. Totally fine to pay a small premium for Surface design.
Guys might get my first surface laptop, 3rd one is too expensive so I'm considering the second one. Is it worth in 2019 or should I get asus' zenbooks? Any other alternatives?
@@vitektran Second gen Surface Laptop is still perfectly good, it's still a quad core, and the only thing you really miss is USB C, which you can always use a dongle or dock for.
I love this one, they really dropped the ball on the 15 inch, yes I prefer the screen size, but the 13.5 is better on every other level
Brian Bakker not unless you get the i5 intel 15 inch business model. It’s literally the 13.5 but bigger with no sacrifice in performance, unlike the and version hahaha
AMD*
Designwise, I like the 13'' more than the 15'' because the keyboard doesn't leave much blank surface by the sides to the edges.
that is also why 13 inch macbook pro looks better than the 15 inch.
Would have been better on the 15 if they put speakers on those sides, similar to macbooks.
haha same... microsoft rlly did a bad job on the 15" its like they put it there just to say that they have a 15" as well but its overall crap
Would like to see a comparison video of this Surface laptop 3 vs new Dell XPS 13 (2020) vs HP Spectra pls.
i really wish he was a football show host, well spoken, meticulous and classy, would be perfect at it.
In my opinion the 13¨ base model is the only one worth buying, you get the most bang for the buck and is a great laptop, I'm surprised with the overall quality and the attention to detail, runs smoothly, very long battery life, best speakers, keyboard and trackpad ever, very nice display (only a little too much reflective)but I love the aspect ratio for productivity and the image quality, 8gb of ram is plenty for a non-professional intensive use, you can play most games at low settings, this is an awesome laptop, microsoft have to just cut the bullshit and start with at least 256gb
i got i7 16gb 256ssd for 1299.
Can I edit videos with the 13 inche 8gb, 256gb?
How hard would it have been for Microsoft to put a thunderbolt
Pretty sure he mentions it, briefly. PCI lanes likely devoted to the surface connect port, instead. Proprietary docks and all that.
i am not sure but the thinkpad series recently had sever issues with thunderbolt. As the tb is intel proprietary, lenovo is in hot water.
@@ameyakasture TB became opensource and USB4 will be based of TB3
And that's another reason there's weird AMD boards with TB3.
need to save that for next year's model
Should I get this microsoft surface laptop 3 or should I get the lenovo Yoga c740? Or is there another laptop I should consider? I need a laptop for school and I need it to be able to run games like minecraft and the sims 4.
The 15 feels like an afterthought in even more ways watching this review than watching the 15"s own review. If it was only going to have a 15W TDP in all that size, it should have just went with Ice Lake too, though perhaps the AMD partnership will make more sense once they have 7nm.
they do have a 15in ice lake version, for business
@@Kenttheclark Yeah but you have to be an institutional buyer, not like Dell where you can just go to their business machine page. So effectively for us, they don't, unless they start showing up second hand really quickly (and then I'd be suspect)
Really professional review, great job. I just bought one because it is a nice blend of features, and my Surface Pro 6 has been flawless.
Thanks for the review, I grabbed the i5/256gb in sandstone for my wife's 40th birthday in the BF sales, also got it tax-free and with a free sleeve!
I love how you can remove the God dam alcantara
😆😆😆
I have alcantara one, and it is nice to have it :)
Wish the blue came in all metal. I guess I could join team alcantara for it though.
Personally i prefer to hide the search bar. It is useless and massive
You know what
You are not even wrong
And if you really need to search for something you can just press Windows + S
Hypernova or justice hit wlnodws and start typing. But yes
I love the way the Surface Book clicks and the amazing key travel/typing experience. It appears as if Microsoft made some intentional omissions and I dont know if that strategy is a good idea. Ports and a less than competitive screen as compared to the Macbook give pause for purchase, even with sale pricing.
Great review.. Best Buy has it on sale now for $699. I'm still loving my 1st gen Surface laptop and wasn't planning on upgrading. Your review and $699 may have pushed me over the edge.
Is best buy a site like Amazon and eBay?
Great video as always! Very informative. I got the 15” for the bigger screen. Thanks for the video
Really hoping for a Surface Laptop 4 with Thunderbolt, smaller bezels, reduced glare, and better color/HDR. I'd also like an option for the silver metal option like they have on the 15.
Poetic Voyage that’s exactly what I wished for Microsoft to do with the laptop 3.
@@K3nnyAss Yeah same here, which is why I went for the black one in the end. Although the alcantara is still nice also.
Is this laptop good for school stuff and video editting?
Dan, thanks for bringing up the glare and glossiness of the screen. In your opinion which manufacturers provide the best glossy laptop screens? Thanks
I had compared Surface Laptop 3 vs MacBook Pro 13 side by side. I can confirm that the MBP13 is not as glossy as SL3.
I recently upgraded my Surface Pro 6 to the Surface Laptop 3 and so far I have not regretted my decision, even after the unveiling of the MBA 2020. I would have to pay an additional $150 to have a quad core processor but I would have twice the storage. Even though I would have more storage, that is what my Samsung T5 is for. The Surface Laptop is a delight to type on, its enough to handle my workload on Chrome, and its $300 less than the entry level MBA. For me, since I would only be using the device for work, and I knew I would only need to use Chrome and Windows apps, I knew I did need anything too powerful, nor did I have to spend $1000 to have what i needed.
I will say though, that the MBA does have one advantage, which is MacOS but only because I think it runs more smoothly in some respects. However I feel Microsoft is more like Android to where you can customize more of how the Desktop looks. Anyway, if you were to buy the SL3, you would not be disappointed.
your review is so underrated, One thing i do want to say, i did check out a lot of those expensive, dell, asus ultrabooks and this one is the best because its trackpad is close to a mac's trackpad, also its air vents are not underneath the laptop just like other expensive ultrabooks, so you can use it on your bed, couch without worrying about your laptop suffocating and vents blocked.
Great vid, don’t often sit through full length reviews. Loved this one thanks.
Thanks for explaining this to me,a person who has a problem understanding everything, your an amazing instructor 👍
I’ve purchase surface laptop 3, 8gb of ram and 256gb of storage, and this is my thought.
- The software: nothing special, but having been used it for 3 weeks, I noticed some lag, which is surprising, ‘cause I didn’t expect surface product has this kind of problem.
- The built quality: very sturdy and beautiful. I did accidently hit the edge of the laptop with a table lamp and no damage at all.
- Battery: I did get 5-6 hours solely watching RUclips. There was something strange. The time expected to fully charged wasn’t right for me. It took longer than that. I use 220V current (standard voltage in my place) to charge.
- Fan: hard to hear.
- Heat: the laptop was quite warm, not hot during watching RUclips.
- The Alcantara cover: I would say it felt like wax, not silk or velvet as I expected.
- Speaker: loud and clear. I don’t know the standard when comparing, but I did satisfied
- One thing to know: the keyboard and surface mouse stuck oil from my finger tips (never knew my hands have oil). I never have this problem with Asus (my dad’s laptop).
- Since the laptop had some lag and stuck oil, I returned it. I’ve done some research and I think surface laptop is a bit pricy, 1300 just for 8gb ram and 256gb of storage.
*I’m about to buy a new laptop which is cheaper, to pocket some money. Which laptop do you think it’s good for college with medium use? Many thanks. (sorry for my English, I tried). (I live in Vietnam, but my sister bought laptop for me in US).
Would you choose the Laptop 3 over the Pro 7? Having a very hard time deciding..
I guess it just depends on what you really need. Microsoft has a little surface quiz so that you can see what surface product is right for you, on their official website.
yea tough decision. i think if you're going to use it more like a tablet, get the Pro 7. If not, get the Laptop 3
I upgraded to this model from the Surface Pro 6. The reason I did, was because i wanted more of a laptop experience and I wanted a bigger screen. The device does feel more snappy from the surface pro 6, and I also enjoy the typing experience more. The device feels very sturdy and the wake up feature when lifting the lid is so super convenient. Before buying this, I did try the upgraded black version. I was not impressed with what I got for the extra price tag. The keyboard did not feel as comfortable, the fan felt like it came on more frequently, and the black was just a fingerprint magnet. So in the end i returned it and kept the surface pro 6 at that time before i arrived to the i5 128GB version. In the end all i was going to use it for was the browser and Windows Apps. So, in the end I did not need to spend the extra money.
this guy is giving me jeff goldblum vibes
Where do you get these beautiful wallpapers ?
They look so good !
@Cody Carson Thanks a lot
Is the base model (i5, 8gb, 128gb) good enough for a college student or is the 256gb SSD necessary ($200 difference)? Looking for a laptop with decent battery and run basic apps (word, RUclips, Netflix) at once without any issue.
Thank you much for talking about the specifications that I wish to you
This is the best overall review I've seen on this laptop. Great video
Just wondered if users out there have had trouble with display settings. No Intel control software seems to limit what you can do on the Surface 3. Any thoughts on getting the maximum from the Intel graphics?
I have Surface Laptop 2 since a year and I love it.
How is the alcantara holding up ??
@@juanm.saavedra342 great. Imo alcantara feels better than metal.
Seems like a good purchase however do you think next years version will have no surface connect?.
I want to get this laptop but I can't afford it... I'm going to save up money and try to buy one in the next few months
USB C at last!
It still pisses me off that the battery is not replaceable, and the charger is huge, but it’s such a nice design!
FJJ WFP are you sure? I’m talking about the windows laptop. The keyboard is glued
This was a good video. I had the 15 inch, matte black version; however, I returned it. I read some articles that said that the screens on the all metal builds crack without any warning for some users, and, Miscrosoft seems to be stalling about repairing them, as least currently. They are, of course, happy to replace the screen if you pay somewhere in the ballpark of several hundred dollars...From what I read, watched, it seems that the alcontera model does not have this problem. Why? Maybe because of the soft material that is alcontera. That is what I have surmised from my research. I am writing on the 13.5 (alcontera) inch model now.
How is the Laptop ? Deciding between this and the 2020 MBA
I want to upgrade my ASUS K53U, ideally I want something that’s good for work as well as entertainment purpose. Portable and easy to use. What would you recommend?? Thanks x
The Surface Laptop 3 is a high quality laptop, available in a 13" or 15" form factor. I also regularly use an Apple MacBook Pro, and the quality is absolutely on a par, if not better than the Apple AND, you can upgrade the SSD on the Surface Laptop 3 - so buy the 128GB model, and upgrade the SSD to 1TB (I have - very easy!)
I went with the all metal black version as I wasn't sure how robust the fabric keyboard area would be on the other models.
Hey to upgrade the SSD, do you have to take it to Microsoft? Or do you just take it to a computer shop? Thanks in advance.
Does it come with normal windows or do i have to pay for it
Quality and detailed video. So should look like laptop reviews.
Is Microsoft releasing a surface book 3? So weird no one mentioned it! :)
When they release matte monitor I'll get it next day.
an anti glare scren protector costs less than 15 usd
@@dontleaveamessage Why would I spend any money to fix something that shouldn't have been broken in the first place.
I bought the new XPS13 with Comet Lake, and it was an absolute ass. Screen was fantastic on it, but the keyboard layout is still bad, UHD620 is still trash, battery life was worse than the previous model, amount of bloatware is insane, and it got its first BSOD in the first week of usage. It's definitely not as good as many reviews make it out to be.
After going to hell and back through Dell's incompetent return process to return the damn thing, I bit the bullet and bought Surface Laptop 3 as it has just gone into Black Friday sale. Got the i7 model with 16GB RAM and 256GB SSD, and I don't regret a thing. Aside from the price, it's actually rather hard to find a fault with this laptop. Anything productivity is a breeze, works well with Creative Cloud, touchpad gestures are incredibly accurate, and once you experience that Windows Hello speed you just can't go back to fingerprints.
And dat body. DAT BODY. I got the matte black version and it's super smooth and super luxurious. I also bought a dbrand skin that I'm not not sure if I want to put on it because of how good it feels on my skin. My favorite OCD thing to do while I'm not using the laptop is now rubbing the surface of the laptop (no pun intended)
At a regular price I don't think it's worth it, but when it's on discount, I think it's one of the best laptop you can buy.
how are you liking it a few days after the honeymoon period? I was debating between the XPS, SL3 and X1 carbon. Only thing that sucks about the Surface is the ports selection, the USB C has no thunderbolt support. But it seems everything else is really good, especially the trackpad since I am coming from MacOs.
Can I do presentations fir this laptop? I plug into a HDMI cable, but do not see the port for that cable.
I have the Surface 4 Pro(12.5) which I had a problem with an Microsoft swapped it for a New/Referb). Is it worth upgrading to this 13.5 Laptop. This review for awesome and thank you!
Dying in anticipation for your Review of the Surface Pro X!!! -------PLEASE!!!
Good for travel and editing youtube videos?
Windows Central is the best reviewer
Can you compare Surface laptop 3 and Surface pro 7 on the basis of daily productivity??
I'm stuck between this one, the hp spectre, and the dell xps 13. :/
Which one did you get?
Is it worth getting this over the surface laptop 2 (which is quite a bit cheaper)?
It doesn't have alcantara and it's very repairable than surface laptop2 + AMD processors
that's all I can C
I wish Surface Laptop 3 had TB3 & at leash MX250, although there will be a bit thermal issue.
@@fjjwfp7819 it's not. Look at benches.
Gorgeous machine. Very tempting.
would this laptop run smooth on an external display too?
where can i find that background?
Ehy don't they still support the red color?! 😭😭😭😭
Does Minecraft and recording softwares run well on this?
The mics are really good
I honestly prefer to just hide the search bar, Cortana and task view buttons - only useful one to me is the task view button and I find Win+Tab is more convenient. I also think Win+S is more convenient for search. I don't use cortana.
Also, I always enable small taskbar icons - otherwise the space it uses is a waste.
Love this laptop and was about to get one on Black Friday sales (yesterday) but ended up getting a Macbook Pro. I like using both Mac OS and Windows and already use a Surface Go for my on the go device, so went with the Macbook. Was about to pull the trigger on the sandstone one, it's such a pretty colour.
which macbook pro did you go for?
@@Pyonz24 13inch (1.4GHz) with 256gb SSD. I also had a voucher from my rewards points so in the end I got it about $600 off the regular price (in Australia).
One of best all-around Windows laptop. Best is XPS if price is no option.
Edit: I have both
do u notice any differences in smoothness of the OS?
I'd assume the surface running windows 10 is smoother than the xps - or is there no difference?
@@rockyk6805 I think surface is smoother. But my old XPS had an i5, so hard to know if hardware makes a difference.
Is there any way to tell on a brand new sealed box if it's a Toshiba ssd or that other crap?
Can someone tell me if the keyboard is the same size on the 13.5" and 15" version? I was looking to get a keyboard cover to protect from junk getting down into the speaker.
Sounding less depressed than for the 15" review heh ?
Yeah. Because the 15 with the Ryzen 5 costs premium with performance of a $600 laptop😂😂😂
what minute of this wideo is sound test?
Should I get the surface laptop 2 (£899) or 3 (£1099)? Would be going for i5 256gb
Unless you really need the usb c, go for the second gen. I assume that you won't be planning to game on neither of these.
@@filipse7067 yeah wouldnt be gaming on either - also don't really see the need for usb c
Possible to upgrade SSD to 2tb ?
Does it have the same keyboard as the laptop 2?
would pubg g run in the same manner with the i5 sl3 8gb ram and 256 storage?
Surface laptop 3 or MacBook Air 2019?? Please help!
Do you prefer Windows or Mac OS?
If that does not bother you, I'd go for the Surface. If you go for the 256gb hard drive it is around the same price as the 128gb MacBook Air. The Surface is also more powerful, it has a quad-core compared to the dual-core.
If you prefer Apple and use other Apple products such as an iPhone and iPad go for the MacBook Air as you can stay within the Apple Ecosystem.
Hope this helps you with your decision! 😁
@@matt.noble05 helped me with mine. Im going with this Surface. Thanks
Is the i7 w/ 16gb ram spec good for video editing?
salali I think so also looking for a laptop for that take a look at Lenovo y540
can you review dell xps 13 2in1 2019?
can you compare this laptop to the 2019 13' macbook pro?
sorry for ask, but what is the name of this email app?
The HP x360 OLED doesn't support LTE. I'm leaning toward the Lenovo X1 Yoga with 10th Gen, 6 core processor. Kinda pricey but, dang!
Surface 3 or Lenovo S540???
If I'm able to get a premium laptop before I go to college, not saying I will, my choice is between this laptop and the asus zenbook 13.
Wallpaper plz?
If I buy a new laptop, it needs to be more powerful than my current Surface Book 2 (16GB, 1TB SSD). What is "powerful"? My use doesn't really utilize the NVIDIA graphichs card, so I can live with simpler graphics. But I'd expect:
- at least 32 GB RAM
- at least 1TB SSD
- somewhat faster than the SB2
- better wifi-card
- don't mind LTE
- although I don't use a stylus much, I like the possibility
- I use SD card reader for photos (camera), so I prefer built-in SD card reader
- at least as good battery life as the SB2, preferably better
- doesn't have to be 15" -- 13-13.5" is probably ok. (SP7 screen is too small; SPX ok)
- the SB2 screen detachment mechanism is somewhat fiddly
I saw a review of SL3 15" intel vs. AMD. Seemed like the intel version was 10-20% faster on most tests, and with 40% better batter capacity. But what happened with 32GB version?
So you can replace the battery in this?
Yeah
@@mrbiggie6674 Great thank you MrBiggie!
@@msorobia no problem! Just the rubber feet on the bottom are taken out then there are screws that then remove the bottom plate. Hope you enjoy it if you purchase one!
what's lte?
When ur phone screen is better then ur laptop
The bezel makes me feel like the laptop come from 2015 though, it is not consider "thin" compared to XPS or even Macbook Pro series
I think it looks more symmetrical with the bezels as they are.
Le Cuong bezels don’t matter to me when the rest of the laptop and the display itself is downright gorgeous, also it’s literally a thumb wide, not that big of a deal unlike the surface pro
Is platinum available without alacantara?
Only the 15"
Does the screen detach
Yes
Just me or he looks a little like tony stark aha love the video
omg he does
Horrible backlight bleed on the bottom. You can tell in this video when it's not a black background. Look at the task bar
Mine had a buzzing sound and was hot. Got my money back

No one ever disagree with Daniel on Windows Central because he goes full on attacky nasty!
HDR 400 can be achieved with a 400 mitt display....
please do review on surface X
Seems faster
2:04 You did not notice the backlight bleeding at the bottom?
You are superb
Normals round up $1 and are not tricked by $999. Good call. Just charge $1000 and stop insulting everyone's "psychological profile". ...Be Different.
It would be perfect for me if it has a TB3 port.
Playing an FPS on a laptop with a controller and not a keyboard and mouse combo is blasphemous.
It would be "gamepad", "controller" is a name for a category of devices.
I guess they’re both synonyms, hence both are correct. The newer consoles just call them controllers, but in the past I guess the term gamepad was used more.
