It's strange that I found this video because I was just given a pair of Divas an MD 10, reference 64 DAC, KRC pre amp and a KSA 150 plus 2 MDA 300s I am rebuilding the soft start boards on the amps. I just tested the CD equipment and all is good. Damn the Divas are heavy. I can't wait to compare them to my Infinity IRS Betas. I installed a QFM9 FM antenna and did some other work for a doctor 30 years ago and he passed away and his wife found my number and called me last Friday and asked if I wanted the "stereo" equipment. I forgot to mention the 50 pound VPI table.

Fun video. Notice how the cosmetics of the Krell and the Apogees match so well in their 50 shades of gray?
Understatement of the year: the room is undersized. Seriously guys, this cannot ever achieve what these speakers are capable of, or even close. I know as an Apogee Full Range owner myself. You need at least 6 feet to the wall behind them, and at least 2 feet between the side walls and the outer edges of the speakers. The tweeters should be on the inside, in the range of 6 to 11 feet apart. With proper ribbon phasing (not always observed) and no toe-in, the listener sits in a large sweet spot. Here the speakers are projecting the sweet spot to the side walls. Don’t mean to be negative here, only helpful. You really need to put smaller speakers in here and find the Apogees a suitable room to achieve the majesty they are capable of.

Had a a pair of Magnepan speakers in my first apartment. Late 80:s. It had a quite decent sized living room. New people visiting was quite often asking if I changes clothes behind these things! Hehe! No! its my speakers. They were impressed with the sound of those thin speakers. I had an Ikea table in between the speakers with the bottom layer sawn of for the correct suspension of the Linn LP13 record palyer and underneath was the amplifier.
It is true, as other stated, these bi polar speakers need a decent sized room and lot of space both behind and from the side walls. I started with something like 1.2 meters from the back wall, tweeter ribbon inside. Spread them apart with still ample room from the side walls. Trying out at what distance the sofa should be. Then trying different widths with the speakers orthogonally angled. When all this combos were tried I started trying out some toe in and the reiteratrd the process. During the time I owned these speakers I spent whole nights moving around these speakers, and sometimes small adjustments could give large improvements. Eventually I was annoyed with the small sweet spot were the head should be placed so the sound was not altered when moving it around so I movee on to other more convnetial speakers…
Me and a friend was building apogee copies by making our own ribbon sheets. It was a danish guy started doing that and a hifi magazine named High Fidelity had a diy series of articles. The bass sheet was made of plastic owen bags that you cook a chicken in.. and danish sandwich aluminium foil that was thin aluminium, and layered with thin paper that was using wax as ana dhesion layer inbetween, was not available in Sweden and we lived far north but we find someone going to Denmark that bought this for us! The tweeter ribbon was made of a kind of surgery tape, think it contained kevlar fibres and was layered with thin aluminium strips for the coil. This surgery tape was believed to give better sound quality than the original apogee solution….

You state that you are still trying to figure out the best way to set the Apogee FR up. Please remove them from this tiny room as they will never work in this size listening room. They are designed to be at least 4.5ft from the rear wall and 2' from the sidewalls. There are like fine wine, they need a LOT of room to breathe! This current room would be good for some monitor speakers on stands but that's about it.
Take care & enjoy de music.

Guys, you are going to either blow both power supplies or burn your shop down with them stacked like that. The KBL power supply gets ridiculously hot and can burn your fingers if your not careful.
Get them apart and in free space. I know, as I used to sell this stuff. KBL to me, was the second best Preamp I ever heard. Second to the DNM Series 3 Twin.

    For sake of clarity
The KBX crossover and the original apogee crossover are active units (not passive) as referenced in the video.

the whole point of having separate linear power supply's is that you use the umbilical cord to keep the distance away from the pre-amp I believe according to Dan D'agostino and Ray Samuels - both iconic designers and engineers agree- KEEP your power supply away from the pre-amp

Great video with beautiful kit, but no mention of the most important piece of equipment i.e. the cables. They carry the signals from pre-amps to amps to speakers and are fundamental in producing fantastic sound. No use having a Rolls Royce and running it on cooking oil.

I’m stunned that with all the quality of design and build that the KBLs would have no way of syncing the volume pots? If I was that rich and that obsessed with audio there’s no way I could have lived with that arrangement. You’d be forever wondering if it was properly balanced.

When switched to dual mono mode with the the 2 chasis there are dip switches inside the units which must be set. In this dual mono configuration the gain is matched by adjusting the volume of controls of each unit utilizing the led lights adjacent to the symmetry knob as whose function is changed in dual mono. It is explained in the manual. This allows you to exactly match the volume (gain) of the 2 channels.

Hello ! Please tell me, I need your advice. My system has Krell ksa300s + krc-2, Infinity IRS SIGMA acoustics. As I understand it, this system requires a DAC and a CD of a normal level... now I’m using Marantz 14 Super audio...) There is an opportunity to buy Krell kps 20 i/l. It has a transport and a DAC, but also a preamp... Question: How can I use the KPS 20 to bypass its built-in preamp? I don’t want to sell the Krc-2, and I think that as a preamplifier it is better than the one built into the kps 20i/l... I need your advice) Thank you

Monster speakers for that room! Anybody know the difference of krell mda 300 monos vs the ksa 250? For a moment they look the same. Appreciate all the time you put into these curated systems. Like a time capsule! Keep it up! Love them accostic panels on the wall with the magazine reviews! Can these be purchased and have the owner wants for pictures or print on them? A link to the manufacturer of those panels would be appreciated! Thanks!

Love the channel and the store. I love the vintage stuff and the high end craziness. But if anyone here can honestly tell the difference between single or dual power supplies or single/dual preamps in a blind test you are lying to yourself and the rest of us. I think things get taken too far, even in the ultra high end, to the detriment of the hobby.

If you put an elastic band over the Two volume control knobs, they would turn at the same time, therefore negating the need for the user to adjust both respectively.

You guys really don’t know how to setup Apogees in a room. You but a 7’ Apogees in a shoebox 1’ front the front wall with no space on the sides. You must be joking if you claim you can make those Apogee sound good in that room. Jason Bloom is rolling over in his grave. 😂
