The original song is written by Kelly Clarkson. The music video depicts the story of a little girl watching as her mother falls apart because of the hostile relationship with her husband. The song is Kelly telling her mother that she won't be like her, that she won't let her own child grow up in the environment she did. I really suggest checking it out.
Yes that is exactly how I understand this. Very powerful song. She had clarity at a very young age and it seems to me that is what enabled her to forgive her mother and move forward in life without making the same mistakes.
It is amazing how the same words can get a different interpretation from different people. I told my sisters that it was about a daughter watching her mom get repeatedly hurt and do nothing to stop it and it caused her to grow up afraid to open herself to others, especially men. My sisters can't see why I think that.
Reba and Kelly did a CMT Crossroads where they made duets out of songs from both of them. All of them are excellent. Reba is Kelly’s kids grandma and helped her get away from bad management after AI.
They're both great, but Kelly doesn't get half of the respect she deserves as an amazing vocalist just because she won a casting show. She's amazing, if anyone needs more proof watch her memorial medley from the 2013 Grammy Awards. Fantastic.
Kelly is married to Reba's former stepson. I think they still think of themselves as mother-in-law and daughter-in-law. Love everything by both of these ladies, and I love this video.

This song hits really close for me. I was in a very abusive relationship with a guy that beat me and left me for dead. I was able to get out of that situation. When you go through that kind of thing it effects every relationship you have from then on.
@@BUHNANUHBREAD she is married to Brandon Blackstock, who is the son of Reba's ex husband. Reba's son is Shelby Blackstock. That would make Reba Brandon's step mother.
It makes me think of my very first relationship when I was 15. It started me on a very dangerous path of abusive relationships. Luckily I was able to break that cycle.
Marie0220 I love this song because it works for so many things, not just romantic relationships. This song gave me the confidence to confront my dad who was mentally, emotionally and physically abusive and who taught me that any softer emotions are weaknesses. We had a long discussion and I finally forgave him and was able to let go of the past.
If I'm not mistaking, Ms. Clarkson wrote this song when she was, well, to young and I wanna say that it was definitely a personal experience type of song. I dunno/don't remember the exact details and I've only heard her version of the song once. Both the original (I'm pretty sure it's the original at least ) and this version hit hard but for different reasons. Kelly and Reba have a rather close bond so this version hits hard 'cause it's like seeing a surrogate mother try to be there for Kelly to the best of her ability and hurt because there's only so much she can actually do. The other version with Kelly on her own hits hard do to just being a much more personal version.
It was written partially about her parents Divorce. When she was 6 she lived through it by taking up the slack left by both of her parents never being around much, and that made it hard to trust and love anyone enough to marry. There wasn't any Physical abuse more emotional, but as adults she and Reba probably decided that the physical would work better visibly along with the words. www.songfacts.com/facts/kelly-clarkson/because-of-you.
Coming from a woman who survived an abusive ex husband and an abusive father I can tell you this song is how I felt before I met my wonderful husband who gave me the world showed me what love is I'm no longer afraid because he protects me because he loves me he is amazing and he has my heart forever
Yes, Kelly wrote and originally taped the song. It's about her when her father left them, and said her mother was depending on her when she was so young.
I met a woman who had to wear dark glasses because her boyfriend about bashed her eye in. Was so black you couldn’t see the eye. She kept her head up and told us the story of him trying to kill her. She left him, he was sentenced for a long time.
The first time I heard this song the dam in me broke. My mom had serious mental issues and my childhood was a living hell, I thought I had moved on from it all..wonderful husband of 30 years. Beautiful daughter..then this song ..it still gets to me
i was TODAY YEARS OLD when i learned what this song was actually about!!! I'd absolutely heard it on the radio, and probably have it dl'd somewhere, but never paid any real attention to the lyrics 🤯 they sang the everloving hell out of it, too
"Why do we and everyone we love choose people who make us feel small?" "We accept the love we think we deserve." Too often the woman just stays with the @$$hole because it's all she ever knew.
So often, too many people make assumptions they shouldn't have. The key to learn from this video is to reach out and help when you see something is wrong. Contact law enforcement for the abused - because so very often, they cannot get to a phone, because of whatever the circumstance, or talk to people about what is going on. Abusers are extremely controlling, in every aspect of life, and will pull whatever means necessary to keep control of the person/persons they are abusing. That control IS terrifying. Never, ever assume it is because that is all the abused person knows. They need help getting out and do not know who to trust for that help. Or they cannot get away from their abuser for and amount of time to do that for themselves - very often, the abuser WILL abuse their own family members or pets. You watch their behavior around their family, and whether or not the family allows themselves to be alone with said abuser. Never, ever assume anything, no matter the sex of the person being abused, or the situation. If it is something you cannot handle by yourself with the abuser, please get law enforcement involved with helping, as quickly as possible. Provide answers and help for the abused instead of judgments.
True and true , it took me 7 years to leave and I lost everything, I had to sacrifice it all for me freedom , regrets I have them but leaving was the best , sanist thing I did , I was almost dead inside
Lisa Rice is on he right track, also, sometimes women don't want to admit they made a mistake and they keep trying. I just got word a couple of hours ago, that my 23 year old granddaughter with a 10 month old baby is back on her own. Her boyfriend has a mental issue. He probably is schizophrenic. He had one Psychotic Episode, where he burned their van with everything she owned in it. She took him back. She could help him (one of the oldest stories in the world), today he had another. He is back in jail after head-butting a cop. His probation officer said he will be away for awhile. No one will tell me what all happened. Only that both granddaughter and great granddaughter are OK. I hope she doesn't repeat the mistake again. But, when he does get out will he leave her alone? Only time will tell, and I sit powerless and worry.
This song resonates with me a lot. Growing up my dad was always mean to my mom and treated her like she was less than. My mother started telling me about her relationship with him when I was 15. She didn't find a friend or talk to her sisters she talked to me about what my dad did to her. She told me how she didn't love him and how she wouldn't be with him if it wasn't for her thinking my brother and I needed h around. I saw and heard their distruction. When I found a guy to date he ended up being worse than my father is to my mom. I have always been upset that she shared these things with me when it should've been none of my business. My dad may not have been the best but he deserved better and so she did she. Everytime I sing this song I end up in tears especially when she starts talking about how she should've found a friend to talk to.
This is one of my most favorite songs. It is so emotional and just really shows what so many do not see when they choose not to. Your reaction was so spot on. 😌
Yo I couldn’t appreciate the message of this song when I was a kid but now that I’m older it’s such a powerful message. I subscribed to you now bro your reaction was perfect. Also saw the buffalo bills sign in the background I’m a fellow mafia member go bills.
I bawled like a baby and still do I have a best friend that refused to leave and I watched her die little slow deaths from a far because the bf alienated her from family and friends. It took her almost literally dying to leave and he went away for 9 years. As crazy as it is and in a way I'll never understand her biggest fear is that she will still go back to him when he gets out........... her words from her own mouth. My heart shattered when she said it.
This song to me speaks of the fear that is passed down from mother to daughter in abusive relationships. Each one blames her mother because that abuse was all they knew from childhood. On the other hand it's a wake up call for those currently being abused. Nothing can be done about the past unfortunately but you can change the present and the future for your child. Show your children that they don't have to live that way but taking a stand now before it's too late. Like Billy said, there is help available. I know every situation is different and only you know the pain that you're going through, but find the help you need. If not for your own sake do it for the future of your children.
Kelly Clarksons Video of when She sang by herself is a good one too. Reba was Kelly's idol growing up. Kelly's dream came through, much more than She expected. For a short time Reba was Kelly's Mother in Law. Until Reba's Husband asked for a Divorce, just after their 25 anniversary. Kelly and Reba are still very close. And Kelly has said, Reba is a great Grandmother.
I love reading all of the ways this one song speaks to people. The power of music. For me it was a friend (nearly brother) that tried to save me, but ended up dying just when I needed him most. Because of that pain, I closed myself off for years. And yes, I am stronger now.
When she took the glasses off, the left eye was blackened. When Reba was in there helping her cover it up, it was the right eye. Or was it both eyes and I just couldn't tell from what I saw? There are many songs out there that are trying to bring attention to this and other problems. Some are suggested here like "His Name Is John", "Does He Love You" and "Piece by Piece". Another Reba song with a good message is "Fancy". A song with a message and revenge is "Goodbye Earl" by the Dixie Chicks. Another song is "Independence Day" (Martina McBride). There are lots of them. Country music is good at telling meaningful stories with their lyrics.
My mama was in a situation like this, when I was in my 2nd to last foster home, I saved up my allowance for a year and moved her outta the situation and in to a hotel until she met my stepdad, and he moved her in with him, he never laid a hand on her and no man has since as she has broken the cycle and been sober 25yrd now, my stepdad has been gone almost 10yrs, this October will be 10yrs
Yes! That was the original message. About Kelly having to struggle through her parents divorce...but I feel that it fits in this scenario as well. The first time I heard this song...I thought that Reba represented Kelly at an older age looking back at what had happened. Because I feel that most people would have confronted the man for his behavior...just something to think about.
Reba and Kelly make a great singing duo. I wish they'd do another one. And you should watch Kelly Clarkson's video to Because of You. It's very emotional
Domestic Violence is a very deep shame and having lived through it, I know how destructive it is on your self esteem. You question everything and trust no one. It took me 5 years to walk away but I'm alive!!
Can relate to this song when I was younger all my parents did was argue and shout until I was 16 and my dad walked out and never saw him again until I was in my 30s he then died never got to tell him how he hurt me I am still to this day affected by it I don't like people shouting or arguing in front of me as it brings me back to when I was young my brothers was able to get away from it but I couldn't don't trust people
I look at this version as Reba being the older version of Kelly, the older person looking back at herself and the circumstances that made her the way she is now
First things first, this song is originally about Kelly's father leaving her family when she was young. I can relate. Second, this video and what Kelly was going through...its called Beaten Wife Syndrome...I have seen it for myself...my mom went through it with my stepfather...its not that easy to leave...trust me! And my mom was one of the strongest women I have ever known...it took her two years to leave. Some believe they deserve it, ( they never do!) Or some feel there is no way out, or they wouldn't be able to survive without them. But please keep in mind this happens to men as well, not as common, but they are out there too. If they choose not to come forward, just let them know that if they want to talk...someone is always willing to listen...especially those of us who have seen it, been through it! Thank you for reacting to this video...
They actually changed a lyric in this version. In the original before the last "because of you I am afraid" the line was "because of you I'm ashamed of my life because it's empty"
Incase it's not obvious, Reba was seeing her Mother, memories from the past. I really like this version because with Reba being the daughter and we see her singing this song as a much older woman and obviously no where near being a child, it really points out and stresses how our childhood's continue to be the most common thing we reference in our mind's eye when trying to think of how to approach or handle a situation, and of course there is always the situation of how for many people their childhood ended years and years and years ago, yet the events of that time continue to effect us on a daily basis, for better - or worse.
This song brings back my past but I absolutely love it. You really really need to do the Reba and Kelly song called does he love you. It is absolutely amazing
1st off..still watching in 2019 lol. This video makes me think of my first boyfriend. Kelly's song came out the year after we broke up. And for the longest time it made me cry but I couldn't stop listening to it. (Don't let that make you sad, music has always been my way of coping so if a song makes me think about a hard time in my life i play it a lot--not so much that I dwell constantly but a few times in a row every couple days until I work through the pain). This video came out years after I had already worked through my issues regarding my first love and I was shocked to see that Kelly's character in the video and myself (when I was working though my issues the song reminded of) were in the same situation. My first boyfriend would bring me a gift each and every time he saw me outside of school and we were around his or my parents (we dated from 6th-8th grade so we were too young to drive off alone). However, at school it was a different story. Sometimes he could be sweet, but most of the time, he was wrapped up in another girls arms, or hitting me. The funny thing is, other students and teachers saw this happening in real time and never bothered to stop him. He was smart though because he never hit me anywhere where I wasn't wearing clothes so it was easy to hide the bruises on my chest or back or upper arms. One day he got super upset with me though and we got into a fight. It was a verbal fight and we decided to go our separate ways in the hallway afterwords. IDK why but I felt guilty so I turned around and tapped him lightly on the shoulder to apologize. I got his name and the word "I" out of my mouth and the next thing I know my face and head are killing me and I'm on the ground. My own boyfriend had punched me square in the face, breaking my nose and causing the back of my head to slam into the brick wall behind me. So now I have a broken nose and a concussion. People noticed that! Student's and teachers alike finally saw what was really happening and after several hours of talking to the nurse, teachers, the campus police officer, and several students providing testimonies..My parents were called and I went to the ER that day. Needless to say, that was the end of the relationship. Even if my parents hadn't of forbade it--I had finally decided that I had had enough!

Omg,this is the country version,really good👍👍👍👍👍👍
How have you never heard this song before?!?! It came out like 10 years ago!!😂😂

Still watching as of Nov.2019
God damn 1st hearing them together on this song and it is so amazing
Still watching it and it's almost DEC 2019 .

Yes it is Kelly's original song. A powerful song by powerful women.
