Accidentally Nuking Canada

  • The Cold War between the United States, Soviet Union, and their allies was a period defined by two world-shaking technologies: high-powered rocketry and nuclear energy. The ultimate marriage of these technologies was the Intercontinental Ballistic Missile, or ICBM, which made near-instant global annihilation a terrifying reality and forever changed the face of warfare and global politics. But nuclear power had other, less violent applications in space flight, with both superpowers experimenting with nuclear-powered rockets and actually launching a number of reactor-powered satellites between 1965 and 1988. But what goes up sometimes comes down, and in 1978 a Soviet nuclear-powered satellite tumbled out of the sky and scattered radioactive debris over a vast area of northern Canada, sparking an international incident and one of the largest cleanup operations in history. This is the story of Kosmos 954 and Operation Morning Light.

Daven, just wanted to say you're doing a great job as presenter on these channels. You seem way more confident and comfortable in front of the camera than you used to, and topics have been really interesting.

@joeconstantini5531 Some accidental friction but explained by the daughter of the original owner of some of the channels that Simon just hosted, smashingly so. Sucks but wish them both the best and I think them still linking to eachothers channels is a sign there isn't bad blood. Can't recall which channel of them it was on but look for a thumbnail of a gal you've probably never seen before on a channel you are used to a much bearded cue ball being 👍
Daven certainly is getting better and better, seems like the nerves are becoming less and less apparent 👌

@xXScissorHandsXx I think that was just bio/geo graphics and top tenz. Daven has occasionally done videos on this channel since the beginning of this one, probably because Simon was on vacation.

@mwolkove Yup you are correct and I just meant the daughter of Shell the original owner of some of the channels (sorry no diss just what stuck somehow)
Daven has been a solid part of the team for a long time and does it full justice in the description 👍👍

@@lowkeylunatic growing up I did hear it a lot. Some have obviously carried it forward. I wasn't aware that you have heard every dialect in the English speaking world. Yes that sounds like I'm being a smart arse but I didn't really think it was a big deal and yes I can pronounce it correctly. I'm 57 and have travelled and learnt and changed but some just like to continue doing their thing. We understand those that pronounce or even inunciate incorrectly so I don't think it really matters. Sorry to sound sharp, I'm just off an 11 hr shift and I'm tired 👍

I thought the barely inhabited area was going to be much closer to the most northern tips of Canada (especially with all of the talk of the Arctic), not the northern parts of SK, AB, and southern parts of NWT, and NU as well as major lakes that feed large rivers! There may not be millions of people in these areas, but there are people and events like this complicate evacuation procedures for them (as witnessed by the current wildfire situation). When there are few roads in/out and limited flights, evacuation is difficult. If an area is destroyed or has to be rebuilt, there are few available resources, so everything has to be brought in from away. Also, this was just terrifying to learn on a personal level as I was born in a northern community near this area during this time!

With all due respect, I really don't think 'nuking' is the correct term here. Radioactive debris is radically different from an actual atomic bomb; if anything, it's more like a "dirty" bomb. While I wouldn't call it click-bait, it IS misleading, and I think you could at least have put it in double high quotation marks. Love your channels, cheers!

    • @maryrowe3981

Hmm, for most of us, "nuking" is a generic enough term; there was no deliberate bombing, and I was not feeling click-baited.

I lived in the town of Pinawa when this all happened. My father (and most of the other residents) worked for AECL and it was considered quite the Cold War coup to have the resources and opportunity to study the Soviet technology of the era.
Interesting side note: the plot line of the 1968 movie Ice Station Zebra (Rock Hudson, Ernest Borgnine) eerily foresaw a very similar set of circumstances with a search of the Canadian Arctic for a Soviet spy capsule.
