    It goes to show just how many layers this song has. I love wintersun because of how much is going on all at the same time and it just flows with so much grace and comes together in harmony.

    As much as I love Wintersun, I think these orchestrations show that what is Jari's "weak link" as a composer. If you compare Wintersun's orchestrations to Dimmu Borgir's or Nightwish's orchestrations, the latter ones use the orchestra how it is supposed to be used: as a dynamic entity with endless possibilities in terms of texture and function. You can hear that those arrangements are done by pro orchestrators.
    Jari is a great composer, but with orchestrations, it feels like he is relying too much on his intuition, and there is a limit to what extent you can compose convincing stuff to instruments that you don't know just by fumbling around in the dark. To an untrained ear one probably can't hear the difference's in orchestrations between "Progenies of the Great Apocalypse" to "Sons of Winter and Stars", but to me it's very vivid and I think Jari could benefit very much from hiring pro orchestrator to check his arrangements, OR from studying part-writing, orchestration and counterpoint more closely.

      I think thats what makes it unique. i have not heard one composer who has a similar style to writing as he has, and by comparison i think nightwish and dimmu borgirs orchestration sounds boring.

      i think this is one of those time where not adhering to the rules of music theory is a good choice with potential development of the craft. It's great to stick to what we know but in order to be an innovator you have to push boundaries and bend rules. This has room for improvement, sure, but the fact he meshed so many instrumental lines together with it still sounding great is a magical feat as it is. Orchestras very rarely have this much going on, if ever (to my knowledge). I think this style is also very unique and makes wintersun stand out from others so...all in all, i don't see it as that bad that he ventured outside of theory books

      @@blazejecar yeah, I'm fairly certain Jari actually does know music theory, but just doesn't like doing it by the book cause he wanted to make something unique.

      You are absolutely right there. As a classical music enthusiast and a violinist (not a professional, but experienced in the field) I can confirm this. Nightwish is unique when it comes to orchestrations. The arrangements for the classical instruments are so well done - splitting or multiplying the harmony for classical intruments in a right way, finding suitable parts of the song for each instrument section and being able to bring on the unique tones of those in the orchestra - not an easy job to do. It requires quite a lot - both talent and studying. This is remarkably rare in other genres than classical, where we have the training for it. I don't remember who has done the arrangements for Nightwish, but the difference here is quite big. I'm not saying this is bad, but the contrast is strong.

    • @ToastedCigar
      @ToastedCigar 3 года назад

      @@flav2689 I agree. I think Pip Williams is the orchestrator of Nightwish, he really knows how to write idiomatically for the different instruments. Tuomas does the music of course, but what I've understood that Pip polishes the final result and adds his own touch to the orchestrations

      Allow me to highlight a few things first, my friend:
      1. In case you're mistaken, this is not my own cover.
      2. This is nothing more than the orchestration track from the original song.
      3. The supposed lack of quality in this specific upload has fuck all to do with my other uploads.
      4. Based on the ratings, your opinion is among the overwhelming minority.
      5. Fuck you.
