A couple thoughts, as my dogs are rescues and I've also fostered puppies for a local rescue:
      1. Rescues should always give you a trial period and agree to take the dog back if something doesn't work out (not good with other pets, kids, behavior, etc) but of course there is always an adjustment period so you have to take that into consideration. This is where experience with previous dogs can be helpful for assessing a good match.
      2. Where I live (NC) local rescues always have puppies - in fact sometimes even pregnant dogs who give birth in a foster home (a home is the best setting per Joel for a puppy's first experience of life) so get in touch with your local rescues to find out how often puppies are available (if you want a puppy). Rescues also need fosters for puppies once they hit 8 weeks so that's also a great opportunity to get real life puppy experience with a short term commitment.
      3. The main downside of adopting a rescue dog, even puppies, is that most of the time you are just not going to know what the breed mix is, until/unless you do a DNA test. My first rescue looks like a pit cattle dog lab mix, but she is also 1/4 chow chow which I can't see but totally explains some of her behaviors (and not a breed I would have sought out) and she was a year old when I got her, so most of her formative months were gone. I think that's the biggest gamble with rescues.

PUPPY = STANDARD POODLE MALE., backyard breeder = no socialization for 5 months, inadequate food. GREAT RESCUE, fed well, vet care, many dogs, on acreage. ONE MONTH WITH ME: Potty trained. Talking nonstop to him so he feels safe, and he's almost good with eye contact when I ask him to look, now. Asking him to sit before going outside or when he gets revved up. Many short walks, chews, plays with toys. He's smart and easily overwhelmed. His well-socialized female sib (golden doodle) is a huge help to him. Lots of time to focus on him, thank goodness.

Here's an added tip. When purchasing an important puppy (!) investigate the 'puppy preparation" piece. I didn't realize just how important and valuable the breeder is until I got my 'current' GSD puppy. I can only speak from experience but the breeder was REALLY EXCELLENT!!! My 8 week old sweetie came 'partially' trained and beautifully socialized to noise, water, social stuff, exploration,etc..........I can't say enough. And that's why my GSD is curious, alert, trainable, versatile and just developing in the best ways possible. This is the first time I have paid what I consider a large amount of money for a dog. I really wanted a healthy dog because my previous two GSD suffered from DM. ( I wish this on NO ONE) Beckman's terrific but I wanted to contribute ☺😘😘

One of the most dangerous types of people to play basketball with is a soccer player that had never played basketball. Talk about having to watch your ankles and where your feet land! Back when I balled a lot if there was a soccer player playing pick up I'd keep my distance because they never seemed to know the rules and would constantly be cutting people off and basically tripping people because their feet were so damn quick.

Playing more than one sport per kid also depends on your financial situation Joel. For me, both of my kids played recreational soccer, and then my daughter played rep soccer. Thank God it was only for a couple of years because it was very costly. With my son, he also played recreational hockey, which was very expensive, so I'm glad that he chose to just stick with soccer and not competitive either. When you have to send your kids to university or college and you're a single mom, there are certain priorities that take precedence.

Combining the 2 topics of raising children in sports and age appropriateness training for dogs. I hope coaches (and parents) have gotten better at recognizing children don’t physically mature at the same rates or ages. In my basketball career I was misjudged by coaches at different stages because I matured late (I grew until I was 22) and they regretted it when I ended up dominating players they had passed me by for. Back then (I’m 63) they seemed to focus on what you could do right now instead of your potential.

The cultures all around them sacrificed their children to all sorts of higher powers. God promised Abraham that he would have a massive family from his heir through his wife Sarah. When God told him to sacrifice, Abraham believed that God would simply show His power by raising Isaiac from the dead. God appreciated Abraham's unwavering trust. God stopped him before he harmed Isaiac, telling Abraham that He doesn't want children sacrificed to Him. Then they found a ram nearby where they offered to God instead. This story ties in a lot with Jewish culture and symbolism, as well as showcasing how they were separated from their surrounding cultures from their founder.

I have to echo the earlier comment about you guys discussing Catholicism - that was funny. I was raised Catholic, and what strikes me is that Catholics and Protestants have more in common with each other (day to day raising kids kind of stuff) than they have differences. I thought that schism went out with my parents' generation (I'm a little older than you guys). I can't even think of any C or P that I know who cares about the technical differences between the 2. Evangelicals/ fundamentalists are a different breed, but I think everyone else in the Christian camp is pretty chill.

I would not call myself an atheist, I belive but I avoid joining a church/ or a mosque because I see so much miscomunication and misconception. I avoid talking about religion (no matter what religion it is) to most people because majority is so sensitive about it. They never question why someone else's discussion is so triggering to their own belief system. Plus haven't really read those books to even begin to argue. I am really not even interested to try to disprove anything.
I like your critical thinking about how certain knowledge could have been interpreted in a specific way to create a concept that current church is using. Or maybe they accidentally created this current picture of Jesus. Overall, that is why I follow your channel even though I do not have a dog. I love to watch beautiful human mind at work.

Podcast topic: discuss how to know when your helper dog is ready.
IMO, the dog needs to have been around a decent amount of dogs to be confident. But at the same time needs to be trained (training builds confidence)well enough that the owner can stop what they are doing or before, when you see loading etc. heres the kicker, where's a good place to have that experience but be semi-controlled?! Dog Park? I mean if you don't see any great threats its a good place to watch your dog interact and have an idea if its gonna be good helper dog material right?
    Just a thought...just spit balling.

You can do basic obedience training with another person's dog and not have to have a facility for that. When I started dog walking and did not have many clients, I did obedience training with a Golden and a black lab. I just charged a little bit more than what I was charging for dog walking because I didn't have the experience but I did basic obedience by just taking the dog for a walk and working on the basic commands: Sit, Down, Wait, Come and Stay - you don't need a facility for that. I understand that for behavioral dog training, you do need some kind of setup or facility.

However, since I'm only 15 years old, I don't have an email, and am unable to use someone else's email address.

I would love to be a trainer like Joel.
Sadly I am located in Europe.
But my country desperately need people who don't train dogs with only positive reinforcement.
Because of this I had a reactive dog for 12 years.
With my current dog I use your methods and to be honest, with his 1 year 7 months at the moment he is far more trained than my dog before ever was in his whole life.
And I feel guilty about because I listen to the whole only positive reinforcement stuff.
Sadly this is the trend in my country. The most horrid things I heard was "If you dog stops to sniff, don't pull the leash. Wait until it moves on its own again" or a woman I know, who owns a reactive dog was told "Yeah, it's the breed. Your bitch has to wear a muzzle until it gets better on its own."
Seriously my country needs capable trainer.

It's either a verbal, EH, or a little leash pressure.

The only way to find this out is to read the Gospels as I was doing when I was helping to recover a traumatized dog. I was helping the dog and reading the Gospels at the same time. Umm. I don't really agree with this. Not all kids are into sports nor can they be forced into it without causing rebellion. I have ADHD and Asperger's and tried to play sports as a kid and it was HORRIBLE and created a lot of social weirdness. I froze all the time in the moment and got confused and in basketball my confusion caused me to score for the other team because I mixed up whose side of the court was whose. I enjoyed wrestling but it wasnt available for girls at school and it took me until adulthood to understand I was good at it, but my frustration as a teen wouldve likely caused me to just hurt my opponents when I lose my temper. Idk if I wouldve been good at it as a small child. I was so socially awkward that sports was just foreign and the freezing in the moment was so traumatic and embarrassing. Only one of my kids has any ability to do sports. He was good at soccer. The other kids couldn't be pushed to do sports. My daughter gets the same anxiety and has puked in class being put on the spot by her teachers. It's just not in every kid. Both us parents are active and we're cyclists as adults. When I had my daughters, instead of paying them allowance to do chores, I offered them allowance to get to the gym and workout at least 4 days a week, because they needed exercise, they need to tire themselves out and the confidence built of realizing they can do it, and getting stronger. They HATED it and eventually decided the money wasn't worth it to them. And I paid them A LOT of money to make It worth it. $20/week which is more than anybody I know pays their kids and any of their friends make for allowance for something they should be doing anyway. They didn't like cycling with me either.

I agree with you. I like the gymnastic from like 4-7 because it’s mostly to get their wiggles out. But the 7-14 age group should be access to ALL things from art to sports to sciences to culture. And it’s child-guided (maybe you would’ve liked a calmer game like golf and then could’ve excelled in more arts or something logical like chess). And then that child can choose to mega focus on 1-2 activities that they are passionate about in high school and college.
