I have always loved Priyanka, I 've watched many South Asian movies and she was always my favorite female actress. It just seems like she was always very open minded, although coming from a the India film culture. I'm Bengali raised in the west where even tho I did face racism, most people always assured each other that you're beauty is not determined by your skintone so imagine my shock when I visited Bangladesh in 2017 (I had visited before but as a kid you don't really notice these things) and saw HUUUUUGE posters and billboards hanging at malls for skin lightening products with a face half brown half white, saying that you can become beautiful like the light skinned lady (fair & lovely my desi folks yk whats up lol). I knew that my family wasn't a fan of brown skin (me being brown skin, my mom being pale) and that the only brown skin actresses I knew of were Priyanka and Rani Mukerji, but it was honestly a real eye opener to see how deeply rooted colorism is in our culture. It's sad because South Asian countries are actually so diverse, from the darkest to the lightest skintones, from East Asian to West Asian features, yet they only appreciate their idealistic view of beauty which is heavily inspired from Western influences (my aunt described it as the British rulers having been the one with money and power, so being fair in complexion meant you were well educated, well off and pretty).
