It works great! I have 6 ball pythons and I did all there backgrounds. The first one I did I had to redo because I used the lighter stuff. I had to learn the hard way. Lol
Whats great about it is if you wana use this in a fishtank with fish, it really does make an interestingly nice background and if you add live moss and a couple of plants......Booom a beautiful background
You would need to seal the background with silicone after the foam. I'm also unsure how the dirt would do when submerged. You may need to use non reactive rock or specialized dirt.
I used a liquid pond foil after I shaped the foam and sticked the coco to it. Felt a bit safer with that extra waterproof layer and worked great as glue🙂
No silicone needed over the foam? You made it look so easy, the one i attempted was a pain, carving and cutting the foam and then spreading silicone over to put on the dirt and stuff
I have the same question. I see everyone else cutting the shiny outer layer off of the dried expending foam, then applying silicone over that, then putting the coco fiber on that.
If you put the dry co coir directly on the wet foam before it dries then it gets embedded so no need for the carving or more silicone. I don't know how long the foam stays wet/sticky, but I'd assume you would need to work quickly.
So is that the back ground or the flooring? If it’s the flooring I wouldn’t suggest this, when the reptile sheds, poops, pees, it will soak up into that and harvest bacteria. I could be wrong, but that’s what I imagine happening with like a bearded dragon if it’s the flooring. They shed tiny particles on top of the full body sheds so that just would be a mess trying to clean a floor that isn’t removable. If it’s the background I think it’s cool idea! But regardless it looks awesome
It’s a background. These are only used with bioactive enclosures that essentially clean themselves using isopods and springtails as a clean up crew. I wouldn’t recommend this with fake plants.

@@justanobody891even if it was none of this is toxic for fish once it’s dry. One is literally made for Ponds and silicone is used in aquariums all the time, that’s how they are sealed together and it’s used all the time for decor.
I did my first paludarium this way recently and found that if I let the silicone dry before adding the spray foam, it would always peel off the silicone. Have you had this happen? Is there a trick to it?
do you let the silicon dry first before applying the foam? and would it be safer to silicon the cork to the glass instead of the foam? i feel like the foam won’t hold the wood very well
Yes, And yes, especially if you have larger pieces of wood securing the wood to the glass with silicone and then adding expanding foam would be safer, any enclosure larger than a 12x12x18” I would also recommend adding egg crate light diffuser to the back before adding foam to give it extra support and prevent it from peeling Id personally not put the substrate onto the wet foam like they did though, you’ll have better results if you carve it after it dries and then silicone a background blend to the carved foam
If you are wanting to do some large pieces of wood I would personally recommend siliconing the wood directly to the glass, and then spraying the foam onto the back Id personally not put the substrate onto the wet foam like they did though, you’ll have better results if you carve it after it dries and then silicone a background blend to the carved foam
Morning geckos are alot harder to care for than people say They will find any way to escape and they reproduce like crazy Also there is a chance that they could have a physical or mental illness
No, you are supposed to carve the foam first and then add silicone to add your background substrate blend to it so the silicone properly adheres to the foam
@@Acro8927 thanks. Been waiting for a day without rain so I used coat mine with aquarium silicone. Just that isn’t happening yet 😂 Might just go ahead and put my backdrop in the palladium.

That’s the point of a bioactive setup, it cleans itself via microfauna and bacterial interactions If any waste gets on the background and isn’t cleaned by the clean up crew you can always remove the spot and touch it up
After the silicone cures and the foam fully expands and dries, there are no toxins being released When doing this it’s recommended to do it outside or in a seperate room from the animals to prevent them from breathing anything in though
I wish that were true. I’ve been making these for many years. The foam absolutely sticks without silicone, that’s how I used to make every one. Over time, sometimes even years it will eventually easily peel off without something to stick to like silicone or egg crate. If you don’t want to add silicone don’t but people pay me good money for these and I’d like them to last. I find it worth my time and money.
Naw he’s completely right for adding silicone. My mistake when I made my first enclosure was not adding the silicone first. The spray foam didn’t stick to the glass well 😭 😭

Just made one today for my scorpion
That’s awesome, I’m sure they will love the upgrade!

Is it possible to put plant pots in there without silicone
Yes just when you spray foam insert plant pots into the foam, then when it dries up drill a hole a little deeper for drainage
I didn’t know I was supposed to wait for the silicon to dry, will this cause any issues for my pet?
😂 nah it's actually the preferred method for keeping them from falling and hurting themselves 😂 jk obviously don't @ me
