  • SODOLA reached out to me to take a look at a couple of their 2.5/10G network switches. These switches are budget friendly and great if you are looking for affordable switches with faster than 1G network interfaces for your home network/homelab.
    The 5 port 2.5G switch is a basic unmanaged switch while the 6 port 2.5/10G switch is a web managed switch, which means it means it supports more advanced features such as VLANs, STP, IGMP snooping, etc.
    Disclaimer: SODOLA sponsored the switches but opinions are my own.

    I just received a keepLINK 8 2.5G port + 1 10G SFP smart switch that has that same web UI.

      Yeah. I think Xikestor is another one that’s similar too. A lot of those smaller budget friendly switches have a similar basic UI.

    I'd been looking to see what the differences are between the models distributed by Sodola versus the OEM ones which are by Xike (Referred to as XikeStor or SeekSwan), so thanks for that
    (Differences appear to be purely cosmetic and hardcoding the language to English for Sodola) 👍
    Both variants have firmware updates to version 1.9 which add support for LACP which is a nice addition.

      Ohh, thanks for that info. I will check out the firmware update to see what it adds. Nice that they added that feature because it makes those budget friendly switches more feature rich for the great price.

      It is the EnGenius ECP16 PDU. I did a video about it recently: ruclips.net/video/9hry38FobFw/видео.html

    I am trying to configure my AP with multiple vlans on the managed switch but I dont know how to get the port to allow tagged traffic. The default vlan is getting internet but the tagged VLANs are not getting internet not connecting client?

    • @homenetworkguy
      @homenetworkguy  14 часов назад

      What about your router configuration? You didn’t mention that. It also needs to support VLANs as well and have the proper configuration. If the router doesn’t support VLANs like basic consumer grade routers, only the untagged default VLAN would function properly since the VLAN tags would not be processed.

      @@homenetworkguy I use pfsense and it supports vlans and has been running fine with a Poe injector and AP directly connected to it. I wanted to add a managed switch in between so I can add another AP and power them with this new managed Poe switch. I am not sure what need to be set for vlans and pcid sections. After my original question, I was able to add vlan to the vlan tab against port 8. But where to go next. I wish someone would have a tutorials with these switches.

      Ahh ok. You’re in luck because my next video will be using this switch in an example configuring VLANs. I’m going to be demonstrating how to use a single NIC configuration in OPNsense but the VLAN concepts will be the same.

      @@homenetworkguyawesome! Can you also touch on LACP concept and using two nics on open sense to connect to the switch for higher bandwidth connection.

  • @CriptoCado
    @CriptoCado 2 месяца назад

    there is a firmware update available which allows LACP

    • @homenetworkguy
      @homenetworkguy  2 месяца назад

      Thanks! Someone else mentioned that. I should’ve checked before making the video but I thought that would be a fairly standard managed switch feature even in a budget friendly switch.

      I updated today and see the option now! I wasn’t that far out of date (v1.7 instead of 1.9) considering the firmware date was near the end of last year and the v1.9 update was January of this year.

    kind of few years ago I started with my first switch: simple 1Gbps from Amazon.
    then I needed 1 more - both were 5 ports
    my next one was: 8 ports managed switch - still 1Gbps
    then next was 9 ports managed switch with 1 port being 10Gbps/fiber and 8 being 2.5Gbps
    curerently I bought one more so now I have 18 ports 2.5Gbps and 2 ports 10Gbps interconnecting them (2 switches)
    I am now left with ... 1 empty port
    what is next?
    ideally it would be 24 ports all 10Gbps... but this is huge cost ;-)
    I upgraded (almost) all my servers to be 2.5Gbps - some being multiple 2.5Gbps
    anyway, just a story
    all these switches (including yours from video) have exactly the same software ;-)

      Haha yeah. There is a 12 port 10G Grandstream switch I’ve considered purchasing as an aggregation switch that’s not super expensive ($279): www.ipphone-warehouse.com/grandstream-gwn7832-layer-3-aggregation-managed-network-switch/
      UniFi has an 8 port 10G switch for $269 (out of stock of course).

    I keep wondering why the Switch is so damn cheap...do you have to worry about data protection?

    • @homenetworkguy
      @homenetworkguy  2 месяца назад +1

      Unmanaged switches there should be little concern because there’s no management web interface. Managed switches could potentially reach out to the Internet (for time synchronization, firmware updates, etc) so in theory it could do something more nefarious. If you have a firewall it should be easier to detect and/or block connections coming from the switch if there is any and if you are paranoid about it phoning home. They are cheap because they are typically Chinese brands that are not resold under other brands with a markup (my guess). Just like how you can get cheaper mini PCs from Aliexpress than from resellers on Amazon or brand name companies. The hardware is often sourced from similar companies but the features may be packaged differently and marked up by companies/resellers to make more of a profit.

      @@homenetworkguy Thank you for the explanation, I think I'll buy a switch and take a closer look at it, I use a Unifi Cloud Gateway Ultra, the device is very comfortable. I think sometimes you think about it so much.😊

    • @homenetworkguy
      @homenetworkguy  2 месяца назад +1

      Yeah it’s nice to have a unified (no pun intended) web interface to manage everything with the UniFi products, but there are other good brand name and generic name products that work well enough in a home environment for a better price than UniFi. I only have UniFi APs, but I have other brands like Grandstream for my main switches.

    Hi Bro,
    sorry to have added this query under this video. Need your help. I have openvpn server with split tunnel configured on pfsense & use this VPN to connect to my work environment
    Currently I have a Ubuntu 18.04 laptop on which VPN client is configured, after connecting from this VPN, the internet on this system gets disconnected but I can connect to remote system
    I want internet to be working on my base system as well. There are a few paramenters in the confg file given below
    route-nopull
    route 192.168.10.62 255.255.255.255
    Can you please help me step by step how to fix this. Kindly help.

      Unfortunately, I haven't experimented with implementing a split tunnel configuration for VPNs.. I wish I could help but one day I may work on some VPN content such as that.
