  • The Beach Armoured Recovery Vehicle (BARV) was one of the many adaptations of the Sherman tank in World War Two, with M4A2 Sherman gun tanks manufactured in the USA being converted by technicians from the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (REME) in Britain. The purpose of the BARV was to assist landing craft and recover stranded vehicles stuck in the wet sand of the landing beaches in Normandy, and they could wade in up to 8 feet (2.4m) of water. Around fifty were deployed on D-Day and this survivor from the landings in 1944 is at the D-Day Story Museum in Portsmouth, UK.
