The song was originally much slower. This is from older blog post which had an early demo of the song. (Pre 2003) The poster who uploaded a clip also mentioned there was no bridge at all. This pre-2003 Chariot is somewhat referenced in this video ruclips.net/video/ZewIkamBGio/видео.html (timecoded) where Gavin talks about recording early demos for "the Chariot Record" with producer Camus. This was all before Gavin landed his big record deal with J Records and the songs he had been performing in the NYC bars were transformed to the faster, pop-ish Top 40 hits that we know today. Apparently, Chariot, Waterfall, She Holds A Key, Dancing Shoes, and Glass were all written before 2003. If you have him back maybe you can ask him about it!
