Also, just saw some news from last month that archeologists have uncovered striking evidence of neanderthal artwork from around 50,000 years ago! In later books in the series, Auel, conversant in cutting edge archeology thanks to the research she did for each volume, says that people of the clan, in contrast to cro magnons, don't create figurative or abstract/symbolic "art," or have any interest in the aesthetics of objects outside of their usefulness. I think it's super grrovy how you can track the history of prehistoric archeology as a field in relation to this book!

Those paintings are impressive. When on a holiday in Spain many years ago, we visited the Altamira cave (well, the museum's reproduction, I believe only scientists are allowed into the actual cave). The picture fits the chapter well.

@@Panbaneesha Yes , nothing will screw up something valuable quite like letting people in. They will littler , wipe boogers on the paintings and probably tag it with some spray paint.

22:30 I believe that it wasn’t the act of eating meat that made the human brain grow to like twice the size in a short amount of time, but rather switching from a mainly foraging way of living to a hunter gatherer way by watching the other predators do what they do. Learning to cooperate with other humans to go out and hunt an animal like 5x their size required a lot of quick decision making and definitely gave them a lot of experience, which they would then pass down to their children, and on and on.

That's one theory , there is another that is called the Stoned Ape. Hypothetically , they encountered certain species of fungi that triggered the boom in brain size and function.

Thanks! Glad you’re enjoying! I think Auel used juuuuuuuuust the right amount of magical realism in this book to hook you if you’re not as enthralled by lengthy detailed descriptions of flint knapping and hide curing and such (though I sure am).

I'm not going to lie. The series starts to suck during book four, but book 2 is a really good book, and 3, despite the soap opera, it's not bad either
