This is where legends come to lay down and bask in true cultural humility.

"To me, this is the very epitomy of reality: For a woman of the past did exist, only from the collar up and the sleeves out. The rest of her remained hidden in darkness."

Thank you James, for your effort to the benefit of many. This audiobook allowed me to go through my room and examine the shadows, rather than turn on a bright lamp to read better.

I am a thief. No one appreciates the value of shadows more than I do. But JT seems to have come close.

This book is awesome. To have a Japanese native journal of the asceticism of their culture. To hear of the women being in the shadows stood out most to me. Being that Japanese women fought for rights to dress as they wanted even if the style was male presenting. Now I will study the history of Japanese women's clothes. You read this well. Thank you.

Thank you so much for this beautiful reading ! If you like this book, I recommend the documentary "Sunless" by Chris Marker. It is also a poetic attempt at capturing the essence of Japanese culture (and other things).

oh good grief! The subtlety of life eludes the crude, misshapen, western mind. Bach, Leonardo, the Wright brothers all understood as many, as in fact most western people do the need for nuance and grace.

Did you forget to acknowledge the translators, Edward Seidensticker and Thomas Harper?

I didn't "forget", as I was unaware. Where can I verify that information, so I can include it with confidence? I also wonder if there was a more neutral way to offer that information, online, where interpreting intent from plain text is challenging.
