André René Roussimoff was born in a small farming community in Grenoble, France to Boris and Marian Rouismoff. His parents and four siblings were all of normal size, but André suffered from acromegaly, a hormonal disorder that results when the pituitary gland produces excess growth hormone. As the Giant grew up (very quickly, as he reached the height of 6' 3" by the age of 12) he began to often disagree with his parents. He left home at 14 and obtained a job with a furniture-moving firm and began to play rugby. At 17 he was seen training at a gym by several professional wrestlers. Impressed by his size, they taught him some basic wrestling skills and built a friendship with him. Later, when one of the wrestlers was injured, André stepped in for him. He would wrestle for nearly thirty more years. By his early 20s André had wrestled in Algeria, South Africa, Morocco, Tunisia, England, Scotland, and most of non-Communist Europe but had not found fame. In 1971 he came to North America under the name Jean Ferre and was mildly popular in Canada. Then he met a New York based booker by the name of Vincent J. McMahon (often incorrectly referred to as "Vince McMahon Sr") who renamed him "Andre the Giant," and billed him as 7' 4" (Andre was really closer to 7'). Soon Andre the Giant became a national sensation and was a much sought after wrestler. In addition he participated in television, movies, and commercials. With his wealth the Giant bought a ranch in Ellerbe, North Carolina where he would live during his rare time off and after he retired from wrestling in 1990. He died while in France after attending his father's funeral. André was cremated and his ashes were spread across his ranch. He is survived by his one daughter.

Don’t make up false histories and out and out lies
Andre did not invent something he introduced to them backwoods folks
It’s impossible because he was NOT born yet when it was first created in Algeria back in 1840’s 🤦‍♀️

It was a joke . A stupid joke. Who would possibly believe that?
And the people that live out there are not “backwoods “ folks. They’re regular hard working people like everyone else , and every person I met in that town was sweet…and had a great sense of humor.
      Good lord.

Glad you posted this. I live about an hour north Ellerbe. Many times I would see Andre sitting, waiting for the plane to board at the Piedmont Triad airport in Greensboro, NC. He was a true giant. I never spoke to him but he always seemed very friendly to those who were brave enough to walk up and speak. He would always be kind to the kids when they would approach. I'll have to go check out the exhibit.

I'm just one person who has worked with people who had any number of physical diagnosis. Unfortunately people often don't understand that having to constantly cope with physical pain doesn't always make you the most chipper person to be around at time's. Despite that reality I think Andre was an exceptional 'person' as well as wrestler and a friend. If anything he's an inspiration for all of us to never give up 💚💌

He used to just hang out with the folks in town who all treated him like just one of the neighbors. He enjoyed the peace and quiet of nature. At home he had a custom made bed, Jacuzzi and a recliner. He's likely credited as The Giant for PB because the character when Goldman wrote the book was directly inspired by his trips to MSG to see Andre. It is literally Andre's role from the moment pen hit paper. Those who knew him have told me he would be so happy that everyone remembers Fezzik, and that Fezzik may well outlive the Giant in popular culture. To give the last 4 generations of kids such joy would just thrill him. May he get his wish.

Great video! I loved loved loved Andre and still find him a fascinating person. Unfortunately, some of the facts listed in the museum aren't accurate. It was "Killer Kahn", not "King Kahn" who took credit for breaking Andre's ankle. And Bret Hart (according to Bret's book and Andre's most recent biography) gave Andre that cartoon as a "thank you/farewell" present at Wrestlemania 6. That was Andre's last televised match for WWF and everybody knew it, so that's why Bret did that drawing for him. A very little known fact about that Mania 6 match, Andre wasn't even cleared to wrestle in that match because his health was so bad. He agreed to not tag in at all during the match. He held up that promise, but he still ran interference quite often.

I remember after Andre's retirement (so to speak) he was literally attending a match and he managed to walk in using metal cane's (two). Andre was not the kind of man that would want anyone to feel sorry for him but when I saw that it made me cry. He just never quit until God took him home. I like to think that Andre has the biggest most bestest bed in heaven 😊🐂♉💌

I recently rewatched your dirty dancing video again. While watching that I realized that it was around the same location where the newsreporter and camera man were shot and killed at Smith mountain lake. Me and my brother were best friends with the camera man and I'm sure you get thousands of video requests but I would love to see you do a video about them, their graves, and where the shooting took place. Thank you for all you do scott.

Ive been wrestling for almost 8 years and got the chance to wrestle in this small town. It was their big 4th of July celebration but sadly didn't even know about the museum at the moment. It was very surreal to know it was the place Andre lived. Andre is a huge name in pro wrestling, and He is of course very important to the history of the sport. I could only imagine taking shots from Andre lol. Wrestling is real and Andre would definitely let you know lol.
    RIP Andre. 🤘
Ricky Steamboat is a Favorite of mine too. Very innovative.

Bro that dude could drink beer! Plus he was a classy fella! We sure enjoyed this vlog immensely my friend. He was truly a gentle giant. I will never forget the size of his hands. Lol Hulk Hogan was a little guy in comparison. Appreciate the effort's you put into your vlogs Scott. Absolutely some of the best content on RUclips! Luv&Peace Sean&family. 🙂💛✌🏼
