I agree that rum and whisky doesn't work together. I've had about four and all were quite bad. Now you made me want to try Ardnamurchan even more. It's going to be a second Springbank soon I recon. (Actually it's Ralfy who said that😅) Cheers
Ralfy is probably right, but I'll disagree still :D From Springbank (same as with Bunnahabhain) I get a lot of sweetness and saltyness, which I dont find in Ardnamurchan. Ardnamurchan is full bodied for the age, and decently well tasting, relying most on a pear note, but nothing THAT special in my opinion. Especially for that price as well. I had a Tomatin 9 year old rum cask finish a few years ago. I liked it at the time. Not sure how I'd feel about it today. My tastes have changed a bit.
Famous last words but I can’t see it being a second springbank, I love springbank but from this bottling, I don’t get the same great flavour at all but I will try more of their range and as usual, I’m sure, when they release older, more established juice it will be tastier but as of right now it’s a no from just this one bottle! Having said that, it’s just my opinion I know a lot of influencers like ardnamurchan in fact I seem to be the only one who has said they’re not a fan of a bottle so there’s a good chance you could enjoy it! I’m also not connected in the whisky world which allows me to be fully honest too which I like
@@WhiskyWars do appreciate your honesty! Older juice might be better but not necessarly. For ex. I didn't like Arran 10, but it is super popular now, so I've tried 18... and was dissapointed again. Seems like I am in minority
Thank you and to be fair you make a good point. Older doesn’t always mean better. Interesting! I’ve only had their port cask and then their peated line (machrie moor) which I quite enjoyed but will be very different to their standard house spirit like the 10 and 18 are. Casking can really mask poor spirit sometimes but I may well pick up the Arran 10 sometime just to see how it is 🙂 cheers!
I really like peated coastal whiskies. Some of the other reviewers really talked up Ardnamurchan, so I got the same bottle as you, but I too was underwhelmed. I wouldn't say it's bad, but when Ledaig and Talisker are readily available with the same price and a 10 year statement, I'd go with those over it.
Oh 100%, I think they’re much better to be honest (ledaig + talisker) and I actually prefer raasay to this ardnamurchan. Both new distilleries but I preferred the flavour of the raasay. I’m glad to hear that I’m not on my own 😅 but there’s always a chance their future releases could still blow me away so I’ll keep an open mind. cheers!
At last, someone else who can't understand the Ardnamurchan hype. It's just....ok, with some fancy finishes that disguise the undistinguished nature of the spirit. The distillery definitely has potential, and I genuinely look forward to what they might be doing in 5 or 10 years, but it's not there yet. I also agree the naming convention is unnecessarily hard to decipher!
I think you’ve said it better than I did! I totally agree with you, especially with checking them out in the future. I could totally have a very different opinion on them with their future releases, it’s just a wait and see for how it develops but there’s every chance it could be great but for right now, with this bottle here.. nope! 👎
Its great that you say what you dont get along with as well. I want more of that. Sometimes it seems people online like every single whisky. I agree with the Teeling. Im not mad at Jura and Ardnamurchan though. Jura is just mediocre but not bad and Ardnamurchan is decent in my opinion. Nothing special though. Way overrated for sure. The rest I have fortunately not tried. I have some 20 whiskies at home that I could make this type of list of as well. Some of them are popular, such as Glendronach 12, Elijah Craig Small Batch and Ardbeg Uigeadail. Cheers
Thank you! Yeah I see that too and I didn’t know why but now I think I do. Would you critique a friend? It’s probably not a good idea to do what I’m doing to be honest but the only reason I do reviews is for the people who enjoy my videos so I’ll always be as honest as possible. I’ll do more when I feel the need! I also want to promote this feeling in the community as well that it’s okay to say that you don’t enjoy something. Jameson is such low quality. I've tried the regular NAS, the Gold reserve, the 12 and the 18, and all of them are weird and forgettable. And very similar to each other, grain forward, cleaning product smell and watery. Just not for me. I tried two samples of Teeling, the single grain and the single malt, and that was enough for me to know that I didn't need any more of their whisky in my life. Extremely fruity, cloying sweetness, very unbalanced. I was thinking of buying that peated Hinch, now I doubt I will lol. All blended and single grain japanese whisky is bad and sometimes even spectacularly terrible, so I avoid it all like a plague. Except from Nikka from the barrel, that one is surprisingly good, one of the few bottles I cant help to buy when I find it on offer. I've only tried the regular Smokehead, 46%. I'm a Jura fanboy, so I disagree. Everything they put out is at least fine, and some of their bottles are actually great, like The Loch and The Paps. I do prefer the Journey and the 10 over the 12, but it is still fine for me. Their new 16 yo is waiting to be opened on my shelf, I know I'm gonna love it. All they put out is so unique and weird, I know I'm on the minority but I just love their profile. Ardnamurchan is a weird one. Like most people, I actually like it. But, like you, I don't understand what I read on the internet. I like it, but not for the reasons people seem to like it, at all. Also, it's good, but not special in any way. Not much better than the Hearach, another kind of forgettable bottle. It is a weird phenomenon for sure, I really wonder why people describe a whisky I cannot taste at all. I think Raasay and Lagg are vastly superior and way more interesting, even Lochlea is better. I just don't get it. Yeah, Speyburn 10 is weird. I actually like it a lot, and the 15 is one of my favorites. But I never recommend the 10 because I know most people surely won't like it. Their Bradan Orach is pretty bad, BTW. Avoid it. I like the Cardhu 12 a lot. I had a bottle of Teeling Single Malt a few years ago. It was terrible. All those wine casks did it no favours I agree with you. It was way too sweet and unbalanced. Jameson's stout edition is one of the worst whiskies I've ever had.
I also didn’t get on with the single grain either. I think a lot of their whisky is a fancy cask finish but young and they’re not exactly cheap either. Haha sorry about putting you off. If you do buy it, let me know your thoughts but I really don’t enjoy it, probably the hardest whiskey I own to drink. Look, I get it. Jura was and is still an emotional line up for me. I think the 10 was my favourite of the 3 I had so I don’t like being negative on them, I just prefer other liquid now but I also understand why you like them 🙂 100% with you there, I’ve not had lagg (but believe I’ll love them) and the raasay I’ve had, blows the ardnamurchan out of the water. Really excited to see how their spirit develops with age! How is whisky availability in Spain? I know from my time in Portugal, good whisky there is fairly hard to get unless you pay a pretty penny. Cheers!
There seems to be a common theme with the majority of the whiskies you have listed here...they are bottled at 40% ABV, more than likely heavily chill-filtered which in my opinion will destroy a lot of the viscosity and natural character of the whisky. I think in my collection of rum and whisky I only have 2 bottles bottled at 40% ABV, and they were given to me as gifts. Regarding Jura you need to try out independent bottlings - the ones I have had are imo a significant step up from their official bottlings. I still consider the Jura 27 year old from Whisky Sponge that I reviewed last year to be one of the best bottles I have ever had. Only Ardnamurchan I have is one of their cask strength bottles (unsure which year) - sure the spirit is youthful but I enjoyed it, and thought it was decent enough value for a cask strength whisky. Not my favourite but overall promising and hopefully a sign of good things to come. Cheers for the list 🥃
True but I’ve also enjoyed some whiskies at that proof point. To be honest, the oldest Jura I’ve had is the 12 so I wouldn’t even be able to imagine what an extra 15 years, potentially NCF and a high ABV could do to that whisky because it would change so much from what I’ve had but I believe you in saying that it’s some amazing juice!! That’s fair enough and to be honest, I’m very open to try future bottlings from them and seeing how their whisky develops over time. I’m not trying to criticise the distillery, just this particular bottling which I found rather lacking. Cheers! 🥃
Thank you Ash. I haven't tried most of these, but I've had Jura, AnCnoc and Teeling.Jura is just too expensive for what it is. Teeling was ok for me, but not one I'll come back to anytime soon. Ancnoc, was not bad in my opinion. I've had 2 bottles of it and the vinegar note didn't put me off. I focused mostly on the sherry/peat notes wich I enjoyed. However It's more likely I choose others over that in the future. The only Ardnamurchan I've had was the peated sherry cask, wich I liked a lot. Very unique. Speaking of notes that don't really mix.. As yöù know, I love dense notes in the smoke and sherry department, so I wanted to see what happened if I mixed a peated whisky with port wine 😊 Well. It didn't work as I anticipated. Hahaha I have to give you credit, you just made me laugh then. A 98/2 mixer! You really like your sherry notes don’t you 😂 what could beat that though is by adding PX sherry with the finlaggan in that same ratio, the sweetness I think would be even more! Although a lower ABV but maybe you could throw a bit of an unpeated scotch in there to bump up the ABV. I still think there’s room to play with this before you have your perfect blend!
Ash I haven't had any of these bottles. I have had the Teeling Single Malt. I hated it. It was a mix of 5 different wine casks. And ive had Jameson's Stout Edition it was awful.
I don’t recommend you spend anything on these 😉 there’s a chance you could like them of course so I wouldn’t say never do it but it’s just my recommendation to you!
@@WhiskyWarsI will probably give the ardnamurchan a shot some day but peated whisky isn't my favourite. I currently have an ardbeg 10 in my collection for peated whisky.
Well this one isn’t as heavily Peated as that ardbeg which you may prefer. I’d say it’s fairly light peat but definitely evident on the taste and nose. Do let me know your thoughts if you ever pick up a bottle. Perhaps picking up a different bottle of ardnamurchan could be a better idea because they could have some tasty stuff but I really didn’t get on with this one, cheers Gary!
You and I are different with whisky. If I own a whisky and it's half ful, I love it!! I'm trying to make it last! Oh no a peated, sherried ancnoc is bad? Nooooo. Wait, you did not enjoy AD. Doesn't everybody?! Lol. I have not had that one so I have no actual comment. So good. Thank you for sharing. Always good to hear what you do not enjoy just as much as what you do. Cheers!
Haha I used to do that but then I realised… I’m only drinking whisky that I don’t enjoy! 😂 yeah I really really didn’t like it. The taste peated glendronach I find much nicer, I think I did a war on the two but I’m actually going to pick up the ancnoc 12 today to check out how it is unpeated and I’ve heard good things! Yes haha quite strangely so, I seem to be the only person doing reviews that doesn’t like it which I’ve never seen before for a distillery but I just have to be honest, I just didn’t enjoy it. That being said, I could really enjoy their other stuff so I’m not closing my eyes and ears off to their future releases, cheers Jon!
I think rum is a controversial casking, some people really like it and other don’t maybe a bit like marmite.. just doesn’t work for me with Teeling but I’m sure a lot will agree with you, thanks for sharing your thoughts 🙂
😂😂😂 I wish I could make your day but unfortunately I don’t own a bottle but I have had a pour at a friend of mine and I wasn’t too impressed at all but it was just a small pour! If I ever pick up a bottle and really don’t like it, I’ll try to remember your line and say it 😅
What? Ardna AD you skip it?! What wrong with you Ash? Enough is enough. I call the Police. LoL, just joking 😅 i know ther is soo much hype and marketing around Ardmamurchan Distillery and myself stand on the cold side but cant agree, i canuderstand you dont like it but is subjective and this whisky is objectively solid mean good one. I have/had a few Ardna and all of them are/was good. One exception: the Midge. This one is finished in Madeira cask which completely doesnt work for me. To be honest i love Madeira wine i drinked it a lot, i love Portugal, been there 6 times but any whisky finished in this wine i dont like. Only Teeling i owned was Black Pitts which i enjoyed. Rum finished is same story as Madeira for me. I dont like and avoid them. It is no different with all 40% stuff. From time i started sip whisky, mostly scotch in proper way my palate changed and no more tolerate watery 40% mediocre whisky so i just avoid disappointing and save my money on them. If i can give some wee advise to you is: less experimenting with cheap stuff becase is very easy to spend £20-30 buying by heart under emotions. Way better is do research, read some reviews or watch videos before you buy then add some extra £10-20 and buy really good one. So this is the best way IMHO to avoid disappoitment and save some money. Anyway thanks for this video. There is plenty of reviews of prasing good stuff but not much of criticism bad whiskies. We need more. 😁🥂🥂🥂🙋♂️
Hahaha it really does feel like that some times with this distillery though! 😂 I do acknowledge that I’m in a very small group there, in fact I haven’t seen a negative review from an influencer out there! Does strike me as slightly strange. Ah Portugal is amazing. I spend a lot of time around Porto and I just love it there. Thanks for reminding me actually, I wanted to pick up small bottles of different ports/wines/sherries to get acquainted with the differences that I pick up in whisky. Particularly fino/amontillado sherry etc. I think it helps when you go back into whisky to pick up notes plus it’s a fun learning exercise! Yeah that’s good advice, I certainly get it but then again, budget is important and when you review whiskies you need to pick up quite a few so it does help getting a few lower priced ones in there too 😅 I’m actually about to put an order in so I’m excited about some videos soon to come on the channel! I might treat myself to the deanston 18 though, £58… what are your thoughts on this whisky? And thank you! I was slightly hesitant. I actually thought this video could get a really bad reception but I’m really happy with the response it’s getting. People seem to appreciate the honesty which makes me happy 🙂

Only had the Teeling Small Batch and I quite liked it.
I think rum is a controversial casking, some people really like it and other don’t maybe a bit like marmite.. just doesn’t work for me with Teeling but I’m sure a lot will agree with you, thanks for sharing your thoughts 🙂
@@WhiskyWarsnever really tasted the rum in the Teeling Small Batch. But I do enjoy it.
I bought kilhoman, , signatory highland park and signatory Ben Nevis and they were all fantastic.
That’s good to know thanks! Was it the kilchoman Sanaig? I’m thinking about purchasing that
I live for the day, when we all admit, that Nikka from the Barrel is artificially sweetened utter crap.
😂😂😂 I wish I could make your day but unfortunately I don’t own a bottle but I have had a pour at a friend of mine and I wasn’t too impressed at all but it was just a small pour! If I ever pick up a bottle and really don’t like it, I’ll try to remember your line and say it 😅
A good show, makes a change The Worst Whiskies . A well behaved dog, my type.
Thank you!
100% - whiskey with rum - YUK!
It’s a weird combination isn’t it!
I agree with Jura journey and 10 , not worth it. I'd rather have a glen moray 12.
Thanks for the recommendation, I might pick up a glen moray soon!
