It was heartbreaking to learn that Zero was the founder of the Patriots, which were also your other friends in MGS3- I mean, I loved those guys. We got to know them, what they liked and disliked, etc. And then it was even more heartbreaking to learn that for all the harm he had wrought, Zero still saw Snake as an irreplaceable friend. ...Zero, you were too good to be a villain.

If you think about it, Snake (Naked Snake) is actually the bad guy, seeing how much Zero did for Snake during MGS5, Snake seems like a jerk for doing his own thing even after Zero secretly helped him out (without Snake knowing).
It's like the vision both men had was wrong, Snake's was wrong because it always created conflict, he couldn't just abandon war. Zero's was wrong because he controlled the will of the people.
Ivan Lee it's tragic in that respect. If BB knew he wouldn't have felt so bitter. When he lets Zero die in GOTP he was completely oblivious, by that stage he wasn't bitter but he didn't seem to emapthise much with Zero as he died

I still think putting the snake eater support crew into the patriots is kojima's biggest mistake in his entire career, before mgs4 he clearly didn't design any of the character to eventually become the patriots, it is so out of character and it make no sense at all, just imagine if we can have these supporting cast in peace walker and phantom pain how rich the story can be.
I just started playing Phantom Pain and Venom Snake doesn't have any personality compared to Naked Snake. I'm not even blaming Kiefer, Peacewalker wasn't very charming either, the writing just isn't there. Maybe it has something to do with the English localization team, idk.

Help with the whole "You are Big Boss and shaped his legacy" message at the end. You are right though, the character writing in V was absolutely lacking compared to the previous entries, not just Snake.
(probably late) From the start of game. Pick "I like MGS2". Snake will be wearing Raiden's mask at the start. just keep wearing it until Zero calls you. he'll tells Snake to remove the mask which the game will trigger a secret cutscene of Snake removing the mask. then Snake will say his line.
I would recommend playing them. In order up until 3,then play peacewalker and portable ops(if you feel like it since it isn't canon) then play Mgs4 then mgsv ground zeroes and then mgsv the phantom pain and play the msx games after that since mgsv is connected with them
